There is so much more to Baldwin Hills than meets the eye. Home to the largest middle and upper middle-class African American community in Los Angeles, this hillside neighborhood ties together one of the most important strongholds of black culture in town, forming the residential nexus of the Crenshaw area. The Whole World is Watching
In case you haven't noticed, the World Cup championship started Friday. This LAist plans to watch the Footballers Wives marathon on BBC America this weekend in preparation (did you know that Tanya has a blog?).
One Beer at a Time: Lucky Baldwin's
Months ago we were pretty buzzed about the great beer info being passed on to us over at Pasadena's branch of the Yardhouse. You guys steered us westward towards Lucky Baldwin's, and even though it took us a while, we made it there. Lucky Baldwin's is a straight up pub, complete with televisions tuned to sports programming, a marvelous gamut of brews on tap, and a menu full of artery-clogging pub food. We went with a couple of die-hard beer fans, who have been known to just start working their way down the tally sheet list of Lucky Baldwin's offerings. We confess to being in a wholly unadventursome mood (long, tedious days can do that to a spirit, you'll forgive us) so we stuck to a couple of pints of Stella Artois, which hit the spot just fine, thanks. Our very own British import pal tucked into a pint of London Pride, and another friend happily sipped on a foamy pint of Guinness. The food is good old stick to your ribs kind of stuff, like fish and chips, hearty clam chowder, and Brit classics like Bangers and Mash. The vibe is very chill and relaxed, especially on the cozy patio. We're thinking Lucky Baldwin's is what the Yard House wishes it could be, were it not part of the corporate regime of dining experiences. Go for the beer; you'll wanna stick around for a couple of rounds.
