San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Clippers 96-86. You remember how the Clippers overcame a 27-point deficit in the first game of the playoffs on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies to eke out a one-point victory? Well the Clippers sort of know how the Grizz felt now.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers and Lakers Choke
The STAPLES Center Traffic Jam Starts Now
Thursday night's Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals between the Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes marks the start of an unprecedented four-day span of sports in the 92-acre bit of Downtown Los Angeles that encomasses the STAPLES Center and L.A. Live complex.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Play Their Game Plan, Still Lose Game 2
Oklahoma City Thunder defeat LA Lakers 77-75. The Lakers played the game they needed to play. They slowed the tempo, turned the Thunder into a jump-shot team and limited the transition buckets. Despite all of that, the Lakers still lost.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Immobilized by Thunder
Oklahoma City Thunder defeat LA Lakers 119-90. With the exception of the diehard myopic Lakers' fans, no one expected a Laker victory in this game just two days after an emotional Game 7 win. But no one expected all the ugliness that bared its teeth in Oklahoma City.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get Past Denver in Game 7
LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 96-87. What a difference a Game 7 makes. While Andrew Bynum had to eat his words about close out games sometimes being easy the last two games, the entire Laker squad showed up to finally advance to the second round of the playoffs.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Ill At Ease as Denver Forces a Game 7
Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 113-96. Kobe Bryant spent the day with "gastroenteritis." In normal terms, Kobe was puking his guts out all day. It seemed oddly reminiscent of Game 2 of the 2002 Western Conference Finals against the Sacramento Kings when he scored 22 points in a 96-90 loss.
LAst Night's Action: It Wasn't So Easy for the Lakers
Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 102-99. Andrew Bynum before the game said, "Close-out games are actually kind of easy." Easy enough for Bynum since he all but disappeared getting outplayed by JaVale McGee. McGee had 21 points and 14 rebounds while Bynum had 16 points and 11 rebounds. Kobe Bryant did all he could with 43 points, but a last second three just rimmed out giving the Nuggets the Game 5 win.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Pull Out a Win in Denver
LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 92-88. The game was tied at 86-86 with a minute left. Three pointers by Ramon Sessions and Steve Blake sank the Nuggets in their hopes of tying the series. Not even a Danilo Gallinari flop could slow the Lakers down. Kobe Bryant had 22 points, Andrew Bynum had 19 points while Blake had 10 and Jordan Hill had 12 off the bench. Lakers lead the series 3-1.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Beat Nuggets, Take 2-0 Series Lead
LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 104-100. Unsurprisingly the Lakers took Game 2 of this series for a 2-0 series lead as they head for two in Denver.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Epic Playoff Comeback
LA Clippers defeat Memphis Grizzlies 99-98. Did anyone let the Clippers know that they were in the playoffs? The last time we saw this team in the playoffs, we saw them lose by 20 points in Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs to the Phoenix Suns in 2006.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Fumble Gives Lakers Pacific Division
Atlanta Hawks defeat LA Clippers 109-102. It's a good day in Laker Land. First they learned they will be without Ron Artest for only seven games for his elbow to James Harden on Sunday afternoon. Then the Clippers decided to choke losing in Atlanta allowing the Lakers to clinch the third seed in the Western Conference. The Clippers head to Madison Square Garden for a Wednesday night matchup which if they win will clinch the fourth seed.
Metta World Peace's Angry Elbow: Is the Laker Formerly Known as Ron Artest Headed for Suspension?
When you change your name to something as associative as "Metta World Peace" and then you go and elbow a rival on the basketball floor, well, people might have some suggestions for what you should have changed your name to instead.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Break Through to Second Round
LA Kings defeat Vancouver Canucks 2-1 (OT). After losing the last two regular season games to the San Jose Sharks by choking two-goal leads in the third period, there didn't seem to be much hope for this team. It seemed as if the fire went out as soon as they clinched a playoff berth despite having the chance of being the 3-seed. And that's almost never a good omen for a playoff bound team. But after storming out of the gate winning the first two games in Vancouver, anything could happen.
LAst Night's Action: No Revenge for the Lakers against the Spurs
San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Lakers 121-97. No defense, no win. In Kobe Bryant's return after sitting out seven games with a shin injury, the Lakers supposedly bolstered defense was a sieve to the Spurs. Bryant had 18 points in his return while Andrew Bynum had 17 points and only two rebounds. In fact the Spurs out-rebounded the Lakers 42-29.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Rally But Lose in Milwaukee
Milwaukee Brewers defeat LA Dodgers 5-4. The game really did look over when Andre Ethier hit the two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to give the Dodgers the 4-3 lead. It still looked over when Dodgers' closer Javy Guerra had runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, that triple play on Sunday still within sight through the rear view mirror.
LAst Night's Action: Kobe-less Lakers Need OT for Dallas
LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 112-108 (OT).
LAst Night's Action: Kings Take 2-0 Series Lead over Vancouver
LA Kings defeat Vancouver Canucks 4-2. I don't know what to say. I understood why the Kings won Game 1 with the Canucks all but being no-shows. But Game 2?
LAst Night's Action: Kings Outplay Canucks in Vancouver
LA Kings defeat Vancouver Canucks 4-2. It’s not a playoff series until the home team loses. Well it’s officially a series. Dustin Penner - yes, that Dustin Penner - scored the winning goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation while Dustin Brown bagged the empty-netter to ice the game. Mike Richards and Willie Mitchell also scored power-play goals.
NBA Is Getting Ugly in Los Angeles
Watching the Lakers and the Clippers play on Sunday confirmed everything TNT’s Charles Barkley bemoaned last month. On February 1, Barkley publicly apologized to NBA fans for the quality of the games. I brushed it aside noting how with Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups, the Clippers added instant credibility with the quality of their play bringing some liveliness to Los Angeles.
Rumor Has It: Pau Gasol Being Traded
If we are to believe the "whispers" in the NBA, the Los Angeles Lakers are about to lose Pau Gasol from their not-so-winning lineup.
The Road Is a Cruel Mistress for Lakers and Clippers
I honestly can’t say which was worse: the Lakers’ 106-101 come-from-ahead loss to the Washington Wizards or the Clippers’ come-from-behind-only-to-lose-anyhow 101-100 loss against the New Jersey Nets. Both losses were on the road against inferior teams, and both the Lakers and Clippers aren’t that great on the road.
LAst Night's Action: A Masked Kobe Tames Wolves
LA Lakers defeat Minnesota Timberwolves 104-85. Kobe Bryant passed all his concussion tests and played the game with a plastic mask. Kevin Love sat out the game with flu-like symptoms for the Wolves. After running away from the Clippers Tuesday night, the Wolves looked out of gas against the well-rested Lakers. For all the hoopla made over Kobe’s concussion and broken nose, he quietly knocked in 31 points along with seven boards and eight assists. And to the delight of the crowd, everyone got tacos.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Get Thundered
Oklahoma City Thunder defeat LA Lakers 100-85. The final NBA game before the All Star break saw the Lakers unable to withstand another poor shooting performance by Kobe Bryant on the road. While Derek Fisher’s 15 points in Dallas Wednesday night helped bail the Lakers out, no such luck against the best team in the Western Conference.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers and Clippers Pull Out Wins
LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 96-91. The Lakers actually manage to win a game on the road pulling a victory out of the jaws of victory. Kobe Bryant only had 15 points on 4-for-15 shooting, but it was Derek Fisher’s season-high 15 points that helped fill that void. Pau Gasol added 24 points and Andrew Bynum had 19 points and 14 rebounds.
They're Ugly, But Lakers and World Peace Made It Work
There was nothing pretty about the Lakers’ 86-78 win against the Atlanta Hawks as the Lakers came back home from the irrelevant award show road trip. But the ugliness got started over the weekend with some words by Ron Artest.
Lakers and Celtics Dispel Preconceived Notions
There were a lot of preconceived notions with the Lakers and Celtics that were dashed in the Lakers’ 88-87 overtime victory in the Boston Garden (or TD Price WaterhouseCooper Garden whatever it’s called now).
Much Ado About Super Bowl Nothings, Then Kobe Makes History
It really does seem people just like to foam at the mouth over the most irrelevant things. I understand people being horrified by what happened in Penn State and various LAUSD schools. Being horrified by the Holocaust is also acceptable. There needs to be some gravitas is the things we rise up against. That’s why the furor over MIA and Giselle is perplexing.
A Tale of Three Teams
The three teams who call STAPLES Center home departed on long road trips because of a culturally irrelevant award show happening next Sunday. For all three it will test the mettle as they try and solidify their playoff credentials. And for those three, there were three different results.
Lakers and Ducks Get Lopsided Yet Ho-Hum Wins
After a night where two of the three best teams in the NBA Western Conference matched up and featured a ferocious dunk, somehow Tuesday night was a bit of a breather on the excitement meter in Southern California. Hell, only the last two championship winning teams in Southern California played.
Ugliness at STAPLES Center
I was watching Saturday’s Lakers-Clippers game with friends who don’t keep up with sports like I do, although they do enjoy watching sports. You see, they have actual real lives while I live in this suspended adolescent world of athletes. Nonetheless they were still behind the times on the Clippers landing Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups. Although this is a huge indication that they don’t read anything I write, so they’re nothing more than pig fuckers.
