It really does seem people just like to foam at the mouth over the most irrelevant things. I understand people being horrified by what happened in Penn State and various LAUSD schools. Being horrified by the Holocaust is also acceptable. There needs to be some gravitas is the things we rise up against. That’s why the furor over MIA and Giselle is perplexing.
Much Ado About Super Bowl Nothings, Then Kobe Makes History
A Tale of Three Teams
The three teams who call STAPLES Center home departed on long road trips because of a culturally irrelevant award show happening next Sunday. For all three it will test the mettle as they try and solidify their playoff credentials. And for those three, there were three different results.
Lakers and Ducks Get Lopsided Yet Ho-Hum Wins
After a night where two of the three best teams in the NBA Western Conference matched up and featured a ferocious dunk, somehow Tuesday night was a bit of a breather on the excitement meter in Southern California. Hell, only the last two championship winning teams in Southern California played.
Ugliness at STAPLES Center
I was watching Saturday’s Lakers-Clippers game with friends who don’t keep up with sports like I do, although they do enjoy watching sports. You see, they have actual real lives while I live in this suspended adolescent world of athletes. Nonetheless they were still behind the times on the Clippers landing Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups. Although this is a huge indication that they don’t read anything I write, so they’re nothing more than pig fuckers.
Clippers Squelch Heat in Overtime
On Jan. 12, 2011, the Clippers upset the might Miami Heat 111-105 breaking the Heat’s 13-game road winning streak. The Clippers were an upstart team that lacked the experience to be taken seriously. Fast forward one year, there were questions as to how the Clippers would respond now that they have been anointed as contenders. It turned out the Clippers proved their mettle in their 95-89 overtime win over the Miami Heat.
Andrew Bynum Plays Big Against Houston
Andrew Bynum was a player Kobe Bryant hated. Maybe it wasn’t a personal hatred, but before Pau Gasol came to Los Angeles it seemed that Kobe saw Bynum as the symbol of the Lakers’ front office incompetence after Shaquille O’Neal was traded. Bryant to this day still grouses about the fact that Smush Parker was a starting point guard for the Lakers.
A New Year Filled with Mystery about Clippers, Lakers
With a new year comes the hope of having a clearer perspective in life. Unfortunately the only perspective I have to offer is about sports since that’s what my life revolves around now. Or at least it’s the only perspective I can afford to have, but really no one cares about what I can or can’t afford. Nevertheless the Lakers and Clippers are neither as good nor as bad as previously thought.
Lakers, Clippers Xmas an Exercise of Compare-Contrast
It was a tale of two cities with the Lakers and Clippers on Christmas, an exercise in compare/contrast that high school English teachers love to torture their students with. Both games were quite ugly to be honest.
It's Going To Be a Fun NBA Season in LA
Never have preseason NBA games been this entertaining. A livelier Lakers team made things interesting as the Clippers swept the two preseason games with a 108-103 victory on the red-and-blue floor.
What the Hell Was That? Trying to Digest the First Clippers-Lakers Preseason Game
We all know it was merely an exhibition game Monday night, the first for both the Clippers and Lakers in fact. But to blatantly steal from Clippers legendary play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler, oh me oh my! It certainly did look like the dawning of the age of the Clippers as they dismantled the Lakers 114-95.
Lakers Send Mr. Khloe Kardashian to Dallas
When at first you don't succeed, try and try again. After the Chris Paul trade was infamously cancelled by NBA commissioner (and de facto New Orleans Hornets owner) David Stern involving Lamar Odom, the Lakers did manage to trade Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks. This time it looks like it will stick.
David Stern Proves What a Joke the NBA Is
Rather than celebrating a return of basketball, the NBA, Commissioner David Stern and its owners proved how incompetent, petty and ultimately what jokes they are. After nixing a trade that would have sent New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA made the NHL look like a well-oiled machine.
Chris Paul Trade Called Off
Somewhere in between the time it took for me to park my car in Downtown Los Angeles at 6:00 p.m. and the seven-block walk to the STAPLES Center, the Lakers' Chris Paul trade has been called off.
Lakers Nab Chris Paul, Say Adios to Pau Gasol and Lamar Kardashian Odom
After the ground breaking reporting by ESPN that the Lakers wanted both the New Orleans Hornets point guard Chris Paul and Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, it looks like the Lakers got half of what they wanted. Chris Paul is now a Laker on the day that NBA players officially ratified the new collective bargaining agreement.
Party Time for Lakers, Clippers Fans: NBA Announces 2011-12 Season
As NBA TV studio host Matt Winer said, it’s a party. The NBA officially released the 2011-12 schedule, and naturally the party was delayed until the finish of a WNBA game. Oh and there’s the whole lockout thing that really put a damper on the flying confetti.
What the Lakers Need on Draft Day
Today’s NBA draft might be the last chance to satisfy your pro basketball fix as the likelihood of a work stoppage threatens to cut next season’s slate of games short to some degree at least.
The Los Angeles Lakers do not have a first round pick after trading guard Sasha Vujacic to New Jersey for forward/center Joe Smith in mid-December.
It's All About "D" for Mike Brown's Lakers
The Mike Brown era officially began for the Lakers on Tuesday, and well, you better like defense. “I gotta preach it, I gotta talk it, I gotta teach it,” Brown said. The Lakers officially announced the hiring of the former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tuesday with an ensemble of reporters present at the team’s practice facility in El Segundo.
Lakers Get Cavalier with Head Coach Hire
According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Mike Brown will become the new Lakers head coach. Brown agreed in principle to a four-year contract for $18 million with the fourth year a team option.
RIP Lakers: October 26, 2010 - May 8, 2011
I am here to mourn the Lakers. I think my laughing fit has sufficiently died down so I won’t appear to be too insensitive to the Laker organization and its fans.
The epic Wagnerian meltdown of the Lakers is quite impressive. Back on June 17, 2008 it was 131-92 against the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. On Sunday: 122-86 in Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Dallas Mavericks.
LAst Night's Action: At Least Lakers Fans Showed Up
. “We have trust issues.” So sayeth Andrew Bynum to reporters after the game.
And with these trust issues, they expect to win four out of five to pull out the series?
The last time the Lakers lost the first two games of a playoff series it was the 2008 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Laker fans probably remember what happened then. Well now the Lakers find themselves down 0-2 in a series again, however perhaps more embarrassingly they have lost both games at home.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Squash Hornets, Advance to Second Round
LA Lakers defeat New Orleans Hornets 98-80. After the Hornets stunned the Lakers in Game 1, this was supposed to be the team that gave the Lakers a lot of problems as a lot of pundits said. Well the problem was downsized to a whimper in Game 6.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Swat Hornets To Take Series Lead
LA Lakers defeat New Orleans Hornets 106-90. After a first quarter where the Hornets got anything they wanted and led by nine, it seemed unlikely the Lakers would get the win much less give the fans their tacos. But it was the bench that sparked the comeback early in the second quarter coupled with Hornets errors that gave them the win.
LAst Night's Action: Chris Paul and Hornets Sting Lakers in Game 1
Normally a Laker loss in the playoffs isn’t cause for concern, but losing Game 1 to a seven-seed? Maybe a little alarming. The last time the Lakers lost Game 1 at home was on May 4, 2009 when the Houston Rockets beat the Lakers 100-92 in the Western Conference Semifinals. It was a tough series filled with a lot of Aaron Brooks and Luis Scola, but the Lakers eventually prevailed in Game 7 en route to the first of the repeat championships.
LAst Night's Action: Predators Beat Ducks' Quack
Nashville Predators Anaheim Ducks 4-1. Back in 2003 the then-Mighty Ducks of Anaheim rode goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere into a game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Ducks probably never wanted to be on the other end of things, but Predators’ goalie Pekka Rinne’s 27 saves helped give the team the early 1-0 series lead over the Ducks.
Kobe Loves Maggots After All!
Apparently Kobe Bryant does love faggots like me after all. He released a brief statement:
What I said last night should not be taken literally. My actions were out of frustration during the heat of the game, period. The words expressed do NOT reflect my feelings towards the gay and lesbian communities and were NOT meant to offend anyone.
Kobe Calls Ref a Maggot?
Via Deadspin and Last Angry Fan comes a video clip of Lakers' guard Kobe Bryant assessed a technical foul by referee Bennie Adams. Bryant was clearly not happy about getting his 15th technical foul of the season and decided to let Adams know.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers Overwhelm Spurs' Reserves, Bynum Injured
LA Lakers defeat San Antonio Spurs 102-93. With the Spurs sitting their starters in favor of the Austin Toros, the Lakers had a surefire game to break their five game losing streak and puff their chests out a little as they head into the playoffs. Well it turns out Spurs’ head coach Gregg Popovich decision to sit his starters was the smart one since none of them got hurt. Meanwhile Andrew Bynum left the game in the second quarter with a hyper-extended right knee. He will get an MRI on Wednesday.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks' Finn Helps Clinch Playoff Berth
Anaheim Ducks defeat LA Kings 2-1. Thanks to Teemu Selanne’s two goals, the Ducks clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. And for the very first time both the Ducks and the Kings make the playoffs in the same season. Also another interesting note: with the San Jose Sharks also in the playoffs, California has more playoff teams (3) than Canada (2, Vancouver Canucks; Montreal Canadiens.) Go figure.
YouTube Time Machine: Lakers' Abdul-Jabbar Breaks NBA Points Record, This Day in 1984
Here in Los Angeles, our love for the Lakers has recently earned us the distinction of being "starfuckers." But when it comes to stars and the purple and gold Lake Show, the legacy runs deep. Case in point: April 5, 1984 and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scoring "the 31,420th point of his career, breaking the NBA's all-time scoring record, which had been held by Wilt Chamberlain," explains History.
