LAst Night's Action: Kings Beat Panthers for Winning Road Trip

LA Kings defeat Florida Panthers 4-3 (SO). Jack Johnson shoots the winning goal in the shootout as the Kings notch a victory in their last two games on the road for a winning road trip going 3-2-0. The Panthers came out in the second period scoring two goals within two minutes. Johnson would get the Kings in the game with a power play goal halfway in the second period. After Jarrett Stoll knocked evened the game in the third period on a power play goal, the Lightning had a power play opportunity. Randy Jones helped to kill the penalty by scoring a short handed goal for the Kings to take the lead with seconds left in the power play. The win gives the Kings 28 points, second most in the Western Conference.

LAst Night's Action: Stanford Pummells USC

Stanford Cardinal defeat USC Trojans 55-21. It wasn’t incredulous to think Stanford could beat USC at home. They did it two years ago as a 41-point underdog. But no one thought it would be this epic. On homecoming day, the Trojans gave up the most points in their 121-year history to Stanford. The Trojans turned the ball over twice in the first quarter resulting in two touchdowns for the Cardinal. Using their power running game fuelled by Toby Gerhart the Cardinal responded each time the Trojans cut the lead to seven...

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Lose a Mile High

Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 105-79. After keeping the game close in the first half, the Lakers were outscored by the Nuggets 29-8 in the third quarter to seal their fate. While Carmelo Anthony was seemingly contained thanks to foul problems in the first half, he exploded in the third quarter scoring 12 points while making the game a laugher. Both Andrew Bynum and Kobe Bryant scored 19 points while Bynum grabbed 15 rebounds.

LAst Night's Action: Clips Stung by Hornets

Chicago Blackhawks defeat LA Kings 4-1. The Kings are reeling now losing two straight games in regulation after going 6-0-2. Penalty killing literally killed the Kings as they held strong for two periods holding a 1-1 tie. Third period power play goals by Troy Brouwer and Jonathan Toews blew the game open for the Blackhawks giving them an overall 73-72-21 lead all-time against the Kings. They Kings managed only 18 shots on goal all game including a paltry two shots in the third period. Anze Kopitar managed the only goal for the Kings in the second period giving him a league-leading 28 points making him the player to watch in the league. The loss leaves the four points behind the San Jose Sharks for the division and conference lead.

Kings Make Statement to NHL

With all the troubles the Kings have had in penalty killing at home, no one would have said last season that they could shoot their way past their problems. The Kings have ratcheted up the offense scoring 19 goals in five games thanks in large part to a retooled No. 1 line.

LAst Night's Action: Kings Whoop Sharks, Ducks Can't Hold Wild

LA Kings defeat San Jose Sharks 6-4. The Kings exploded on the reigning President's Cup winner San Jose Sharks jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second period. But then the penalties mounted and the Sharks took advantage scoring four powerplay goals. However 26 seconds after the Shark's Dany Heatley scored that last powerplay goal, Teddy Purcell found the puck after a faceoff and beat goalie Thomas Greiss. Davis Drewskie capped off the scoring with 1:19 remaining on an empty-net goal, the first goal of his NHL career. Center Anze Kopitar scored the fourth goal for the Kings in the second period and notched two assists. It wasn't a pretty game and the Kings need to really work on their penalty kill. But two points is two points for their first win of the NHL season after an embarrassing loss to the Phoenix Coyote on Saturday.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Fall to Nats

Washington Nationals defeat LA Dodgers 5-4. Chad Billingsley made his first start in since September 13, and he didn’t look to shabby. In fact in five innings he had a no-hitter going. But in the sixth inning, his usual trouble inning, he walked two and then gave up his first hit to Ryan Zimmerman. Unfortunately that hit was a homer that screamed its way out into the Dodgers bullpen. After the Nationals took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth, shortstop Christian Guzman committed two errors to allow the Dodgers to tie the game. With a runner on third in the bottom of the ninth, Pete Orr hit a sac fly to Andre Ethier in right field who muffed the ball which is inconsequential since the runner was going to score anyhow. Thanks to the Rockies losing, the Dodgers REAL magic number is reduced to six.

LAst Night's Action: Sports Desk Clean Up

Sorry for being so neglectful recently. It seems like everything exploded in the sports world in the last week or so. So here's a round up rather than reading about how the Dodgers and Angels lost Wednesday night.

LA Lakers defeat Denver Nuggets 116-102. Andrew Bynum played in his first game for the Lakers since being injured in January in Memphis posting up 16 points and seven rebounds in 21 minutes played. All in all not a bad return for the big guy. Meanwhile Pau Gasol gobbled everything in the paint scoring 27 points while grabbing 19 rebounds, 11 of which were of the offense variety. Kobe Bryant did his thing with 33 points and the Lakers are within 1/2 a game of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

LA Lakers defeat Sacramento Kings 122-104. I worried about this game a couple of weeks ago, and after falling behind 12 points in the first quarter it seemed justified. But the Lakers hung up 40 in the second quarter while only allowing the Kings to score 18, and they were on their way to a rout. Pau Gasol led the Lakers with 26 points and 12 rebounds while Kobe Bryant scored 22 points. Remember at the beginning of the decade when all that could heard at Arco Arena were cowbells and chants of "Beat LA"? Now they've been replaced with MVP chants to Kobe Bryant. So sad. The Lakers are now half a game behind Cleveland for the best overall record in the NBA.

LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 4-1. Manny Ramirez went 0-for-3 with a walk and scored a run in the third inning thanks in large part to an errant pick-off play by Padres ace Jake Peavy. The game started off on the right foot for the Dodgers when Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson led off the game with consecutive singles. Matt Kemp would close out the scoring with a towering home run to deep center field in the seventh inning. Kemp also robbed Jody Gerut of a line drive double when he made a diving catch into the sunlight in the sixth inning. Despite having a shaky spring, Jonathan Broxton smoked the ball by the last three Padres hitters striking out two for a perfect ninth. This marks the second time Peavy has lost to the Dodgers, the first since 2003 when Kevin Brown was the winning pitcher for the Dodgers.

LA Dodgers defeat LA Angels 6-2. It was so nice to be back at my summer manse especially seeing the Dodgers beat down the Angels. This game put me a little more at ease about the pitching situation after watching the boys in blue shut down an Angels offense that have been running on all cylinders during spring training. Randy Wolf gave up an unearned run on four hits in three innings while Ronald Belisario pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Recently acquired Will Ohman struck out Bobby Abreu, the only batter he faced, on three pitches. While Jonathan Broxton had a shaky outing closing things out, he did strike out a lefty which had been a problem in the past. Meanwhile the Dodger bats seemed to come alive with homers from Casey Blake and Andre Ethier.

Charlotte Bobcats defeat LA Lakers 94-84. I was afraid of this game knowing the Laker's troubles with the Bobcats. In fact the Lakers are only 6-8 against the Bobcats. The Lakers shot an abysmal 39% on a team where no one performed well. In fact they outshot the Bobcats 97-68. The Bobcats meanwhile become only the second team to beat the Lakers twice and are within one game of a playoff spot in the East.

LA Lakers defeat Detroit Pistons 92-77. The last time the Lakers won a game at the Palace of Auburn Hills it was January 8, 2002. The Lakers won the last of their three-peat championships that season. On Thursday night the Lakers faced a Pistons team that was down Allen Iverson, Rip Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace and beat them to submission. Well except for that second quarter when the Pistons bench went on a 15-0 run against the Lakers bench thanks to turnovers and bad shooting. But the Lakers would come storming back in the second half using a 20-0 run to take back control. Kobe Bryant notched 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists while Derek Fisher added 15 points and 12 points each for Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. It was so bad that in the fourth quarter Kobe was serenaded with MVP chants in Detroit.

#6 UCLA Bruins defeat #11 Virginia Commonwealth Rams 65-64. The game was awfully like UCLA's entire season. There were some good points when they took a double digit lead. There were bad points when they couldn't score a point for long stretches. But in the end it was defense that saved them. Down by one point with 11 seconds left to go, VCU inbounded the ball to Eric Maynor. Darren Collison was draped all over him and forced a short shot to preserve the Bruin victory. Up next for the Bruins is Villanova on Saturday on what can essentially be called home-court advantage for Nova.

Nashville Predators defeat LA Kings 4-3. The Kings fell late in the third period when the Predators Ryan Jones scored a goal with 2:18 remaining. With a power play and the goalie pulled, the Kings could not pull out a goal. With 13 games left, the Kings are now six points away from a playoff spot. The chances are now very slim, but the Kings cannot afford another regulation loss if they want to make it to the postseason.

Portland Trail Blazers defeat LA Lakers 111-94. Absolutely nothing in this game was pretty. The Lakers offense was MIA scoring only 56 points through three quarters. A scary moment at the end of the third quarter happened when Trevor Ariza made a hard foul against Rudy Fernandez during a fast break opportunity. Fernandez landed hard on his ribs when he couldn't get his feet under him. Ariza was charged with a flagrant two foul and ejected from the game while Josh Powell and Portland's Travis Outlaw and LaMarcus Aldridge were given technical fouls for the scuffle afterwards. While the Lakers made a valiant attempt in the fourth quarter, a 28 point deficit at the start of the quarter was just too much to overcome. Hopefully they regroup quickly for the upcoming games at Houston and San Antonio.

LA Lakers defeat Memphis Grizzlies 99-89. The Grizzlies had won five of their last seven games against the Lakers in Staples Center, but after losing their last two games the Lakers were determined not to let that happen. They forced the Grizzlies to just 41% shooting which gave the Lakers faithful their tacos. While this wasn't a great game by any stretch of the imagination for the Lakers, a win is a win. Lakers fans: you can breathe.

LA Clippers defeat Boston Celtics 93-91. OM-fucking-G indeed. Eric Gordon left the game with a shoulder injury and Baron Davis fouled out for the Clips, but they managed to stun the basketball world and defeat the reigning champs. The Clippers turned the ball over eight less time than the Celtics and they outscored the Celtics by a huge margin in the paint. Zach Randolph led all scorers with 30 points with four other Clips scoring in double figures.

LA Lakers defeat Oklahoma City Thunder 107-93. The Thunder tried making a comeback in the fourth quarter, but it took Kobe Bryant only three minutes to score 10 points to squash that hope. With the 36 points he scored, Bryant eclipsed Adrian Dantley for 19th all time scorer. The Lakers continue to have the best record in the NBA at 47-10 and the best road record at 21-6.

LA Lakers defeat Golden State Warriors 129-121. The Lakers had to work hard in this second game of a back-to-back. The trailed by as much as 12 points in the third quarter. But they shook off the doldrums and took control of the game at the end of the quarter. The Warriors didn't give up, but the trio of Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol was just too much for them. Both teams had six players that scored in double digits. The Lakers with a 44-10 record have the third best record after 54 games in franchise history. In the other two seasons, 1971-1972 and 1987-1988, they won the NBA title.

Arizona State Sun Devils defeat UCLA Bruins 74-67. UCLA couldn't get it done down the stretch which allowed the Sun Devils to sweep the season series. The Bruins fell behind by as much as 12 points in the first half before using their defense to tie the game by halftime. While the game was close throughout the second half with the Bruins maintaining a slight lead throughout, the Bruins just collapsed. Alfred Aboya got hit with a technical foul after making contact with the ball before Sun Devil Rihard Kuksiks inbounded the ball with the Bruins down by only two. Arizona State made both free throws and Jeff Pendergraph threw down a dunk to ice the game.

LA Kings defeat Ottawa Senators 1-0. It's good when a team wins a game they're supposed to win. The Kings did just that against a horrible Ottawa team who just fired their head coach over the weekend. It wasn't a pretty game by any means - neither team got more than 30 shots on goal - but goalie Jonathan Quick saved all 29 shots on goal for the Kings to preserve the win. Michael Handzus scored a goal late in the third period to break the tie.

UCLA Bruins defeat California Golden Bears 81-66. A 20-4 run to start the second half was all it took for the Bruins to dispatch Cal. The Bruins three-point shooting returned to form while Cal just fumbled along in the second half coughing up the ball. The Bruins are now tied for first place in the Pac-10 with the Washington Huskies who lost to Arizona.

LA Lakers defeat LA Clippers 108-97. Andrew Bynum had a career game against the Clippers scoring 42 points with 15 rebounds. 42 points! That's the most points in a game that any Laker has scored this season. But let's not forget about Kobe Bryant who had a triple-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists. It seemed like his gnarled shooting hand gave him few problems. The Clippers though showed moxie led by Deandre Jordan's 23 points. If he can keep it up the Clippers will be fantastic over the long haul.

LA Kings defeat Minnesota Wild 5-2. Not only did the Kings have the lead going into the third period, they held the Wild scoreless in that period. The Kings penalty kill was suspect giving the Wild's two scores on four power play opportunities. But overall the Kings limited the Wild's shots holding them to 14 after two periods. And having been outscored 15-4 on their recent losing streak, it was a good sign when the Kings came out to score first on a Kyle Calder wrist shot.

USC Trojans defeat #15(Coach)/#16(AP) Arizona State Sun Devils 61-49. Defense wins games, and that was more than evident in this game. USC's Daniel Hackett held ASU standout James Harden to only four points scored on free throws, much lower than his 23.1 points per game average. Harden missed all eight field goal attempts. USC started slow scoring only 19 points in the first half, but they made up for it in the second half with 42 points.

Tampa Bay Lightning defeat LA Kings 3-1. The Kings couldn't muster much of anything giving up two quick goals at the end of the first period. Their only comeback was a slapshot goal by Peter Harrold at the end of the second period assisted by Anze Kopitar. It's not looking good for the Kings right now especially with the Detroit Red Wings on their way to town.
