San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Clippers 102-99. And so the charade that is the Clippers' season comes to a screeching end. Despite trying to make a game of it, the Spurs calmly took control of the final minutes of the game sweeping the Clippers out of the STAPLES Center.
LAst Night's Action: The Clippers Season Is Over
LAst Night's Action: Clippers and Lakers Choke
San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Clippers 96-86. You remember how the Clippers overcame a 27-point deficit in the first game of the playoffs on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies to eke out a one-point victory? Well the Clippers sort of know how the Grizz felt now.
The STAPLES Center Traffic Jam Starts Now
Thursday night's Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals between the Kings and the Phoenix Coyotes marks the start of an unprecedented four-day span of sports in the 92-acre bit of Downtown Los Angeles that encomasses the STAPLES Center and L.A. Live complex.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Still Have No Answers for the Spurs
San Antonio Spurs defeat LA Clippers 105-88. The Clippers tried. After falling down 15 points in the first quarter, they managed to bring the deficit down to a point in the second quarter. But the Spurs were too good.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Take A Licking, Keep on Ticking
Stick a fork in them, the Coyotes are done. Granted the Kings only have a 2-0 series lead thanks to Jeff Carter's hat trick. But the clawing desperation shown by the Coyotes and their cheap hits in the latter stages of the Kings' victory was an indication that this was over.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Tame Coyotes in Game 1 Victory
LA Kings defeat Phoenix Coyotes 4-2. One week off didn't matter to the Kings as they continued where they left off winning Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. They went into Glendale, Ariz. and thoroughly dominated the Coyotes in all three zones becoming just the fifth team in NHL history to win their first six games in the playoffs.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Win Another Series Against Minnesota
LA Angels defeat Minnesota Twins 6-2. Who knew the Angels had 14 hits in them? And who knew the Angels could get all 14 hits in one game? But they did just that winning this series. Angels' starter Ervin Santana went 7 1/3 innings giving up the two runs in his first win of the season. Jordan Walden walked one batter in the ninth inning in a non-save situation. Albert Pujols went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI lifting his batting average to .198.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Take 3-1 Series Lead to Memphis
LA Clippers defeat Memphis Grizzlies 101-97 (OT). Blake Griffin led all scorers with 30 points and fouled out in overtime to help lead the Clippers to a 3-1 series victory over the Grizzlies. Caron Butler, broken left hand and all, scored 14 points while Chris Paul added 27. Of course, no one at Dodger Stadium seemed to care about the proceedings.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Epic Playoff Comeback
LA Clippers defeat Memphis Grizzlies 99-98. Did anyone let the Clippers know that they were in the playoffs? The last time we saw this team in the playoffs, we saw them lose by 20 points in Game 7 of the second round of the playoffs to the Phoenix Suns in 2006.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Can't Down Knicks in Season Finale
New York Knicks defeat LA Clippers 99-93. If the Clippers won this final game of the season, they would have clinched the four-seed and home court advantage in the playoffs. Instead they will have to hope that Memphis loses at home to the Dwight Howard-less Orlando Magic on Thursday. Chris Paul dressed for the Clippers, but suffering a strained left groin no matter how mild it was he did not enter the game.
LAst Night's Action: Clippers Fumble Gives Lakers Pacific Division
Atlanta Hawks defeat LA Clippers 109-102. It's a good day in Laker Land. First they learned they will be without Ron Artest for only seven games for his elbow to James Harden on Sunday afternoon. Then the Clippers decided to choke losing in Atlanta allowing the Lakers to clinch the third seed in the Western Conference. The Clippers head to Madison Square Garden for a Wednesday night matchup which if they win will clinch the fourth seed.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Break Through to Second Round
LA Kings defeat Vancouver Canucks 2-1 (OT). After losing the last two regular season games to the San Jose Sharks by choking two-goal leads in the third period, there didn't seem to be much hope for this team. It seemed as if the fire went out as soon as they clinched a playoff berth despite having the chance of being the 3-seed. And that's almost never a good omen for a playoff bound team. But after storming out of the gate winning the first two games in Vancouver, anything could happen.
LAst Night's Action: Kemp's Blast Prevents Sweep in Milwaukee
LA Dodgers defeat Milwaukee Brewers 4-3. After losing the first two games of the series by one run (in walkoff fashion no less), it was inevitable the Dodgers would win this game since the Dodgers had never been swept by the Brewers. Thanks to a Matt Kemp's power, the Dodgers could rest a bit easier as they head to Houston.
LAst Night's Action: Kendrys Big Bang Lifts the Angels
LA Angels defeat Oakland Athletics 6-0. With the Angels returning home a bit battered and bruised with a 3-6 record, they needed something to lift some spirits. Enter Kendrys Morales.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Get One in the Bronx
LA Angels defeat New York Yankees 7-1. The Angels jumped on Yankees' starter Phil Hughes, Chris Ianetta opening the scoring with a two-run homer in the second inning. Albert Pujols hit an RBI double in the third inning, and Howie Kendrick hit a three-run bomb in the fourth that ran Hughes out of the game.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Bullpen Chokes Again
Minnesota Twins defeat LA Angels 10-9. The Angels' offense has rounded into shape in Minnesota scoring 29 runs in the three-game series. This despite the fact that Albert Pujols is only batting .217. Nope, it's the bullpen that's the bugaboo for the Angels.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Outplay Canucks in Vancouver
LA Kings defeat Vancouver Canucks 4-2. It’s not a playoff series until the home team loses. Well it’s officially a series. Dustin Penner - yes, that Dustin Penner - scored the winning goal with just over three minutes remaining in regulation while Dustin Brown bagged the empty-netter to ice the game. Mike Richards and Willie Mitchell also scored power-play goals.
LAst Night's Action: Stayin' Alive - Kings Edition
LA Kings defeat Calgary Flames 3-0. For a team who were really on the outside of the playoff picture looking in, one would think Calgary would have played with a sense of urgency. Even trailing 2-0 with five minutes left, one would think Calgary would get some good offensive rushes going. But no.
NBA Is Getting Ugly in Los Angeles
Watching the Lakers and the Clippers play on Sunday confirmed everything TNT’s Charles Barkley bemoaned last month. On February 1, Barkley publicly apologized to NBA fans for the quality of the games. I brushed it aside noting how with Chris Paul and Chauncey Billups, the Clippers added instant credibility with the quality of their play bringing some liveliness to Los Angeles.
The Road Is a Cruel Mistress for Lakers and Clippers
I honestly can’t say which was worse: the Lakers’ 106-101 come-from-ahead loss to the Washington Wizards or the Clippers’ come-from-behind-only-to-lose-anyhow 101-100 loss against the New Jersey Nets. Both losses were on the road against inferior teams, and both the Lakers and Clippers aren’t that great on the road.
LAst Night's Action: No Love for Clips
Minnesota Timberwolves defeat LA Clippers 95-94. The Timberwolves made it rain three’s throughout the night with former UCLA Bruin Kevin Love knocked down five of the 11 Minnesota sank.
LAst Night's Action: Wolves Maul the Clips, Kings Tame the Wild, UCLA's Blunts
Minnesota Timberwolves defeat LA Clippers 109-97. This was a close game through three quarters with the Clippers leading most of the way. Then Minnesota exploded all over the court in the fourth quarter 36-21, and that was that. So Blake Griffin had 30 points, DeAndre Jordan 14 points and 14 rebounds.
LAst Night's Action: Lakers and Clippers Pull Out Wins
LA Lakers defeat Dallas Mavericks 96-91. The Lakers actually manage to win a game on the road pulling a victory out of the jaws of victory. Kobe Bryant only had 15 points on 4-for-15 shooting, but it was Derek Fisher’s season-high 15 points that helped fill that void. Pau Gasol added 24 points and Andrew Bynum had 19 points and 14 rebounds.
Clippers End Grammys Roadie with Lone Star Loss
Sometimes I still catch myself thinking the Clippers are that joke of the NBA that made visiting Los Angeles a pleasant experience for opposing teams. It was easy to make that mistake in the first quarter of the Clippers’ 96-92 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
A Mixed Bag for Los Angeles Sports
It was a mixed bag for Los Angeles sports teams on Tuesday.
Clippers: Guard Chauncey Billups after going down in the fourth quarter Monday night in Orlando was diagnosed with a tear of his left Achilles’ tendon. He will miss the rest of the season
Much Ado About Super Bowl Nothings, Then Kobe Makes History
It really does seem people just like to foam at the mouth over the most irrelevant things. I understand people being horrified by what happened in Penn State and various LAUSD schools. Being horrified by the Holocaust is also acceptable. There needs to be some gravitas is the things we rise up against. That’s why the furor over MIA and Giselle is perplexing.
A Tale of Three Teams
The three teams who call STAPLES Center home departed on long road trips because of a culturally irrelevant award show happening next Sunday. For all three it will test the mettle as they try and solidify their playoff credentials. And for those three, there were three different results.
NBA Might Be Bad, But the Clippers Are Surely Entertaining
It’s easy to think nothing is wrong with the NBA from our vantage point in Los Angeles. After all it was announced that four of the starting five players for the Western Conference in the All Star Game would be comprised of players from the Lakers (Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum) and the Clippers (Blake Griffin, Chris Paul).
Kings Power Play Win Comes with Some Controversy
That was as close to a walk-off in regulation for the Kings in their 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at home. As the final seconds were ticking off ready to send the game to the inevitable overtime period, Drew Doughty got the fortunate bounce during a power-play and shot the puck past Columbus goaltender Curtis Sanford as the clock hit 0.3 remaining.
