During the six years relocated Clevelanders Biblical Proof of UFOs haunted the dives of Los Angeles, they made my world a better place. This one band brought so many of my favorite things in the same package. They had a simply colossal sound, shape-shifting between glacial-pace Black Sabbath grind and Who-like momentum, powered by memorable tunes and sweetened with angelic vocal harmonies. They could step on any stage, in any room, with lousy acoustics...

You've probably heard Hexum on Fox's OC or perhaps KROQ. His music is polished and radio-friendly, but remains honest enough to keep it believable. You can catch Hexum at Hotel Cafe on November 18.

Evans' voice is clear, but has a husky quality to it that lends authority to the vocal delivery. Sample a few streams on her record label's website and then listen to Evans perform free this Friday at LACMA.

You asked for it, we listened. Our "essentials" list has a decidedly local flavor now. All bands are either LA-based, LA-natives or playing gigs in the Southland. Some bands are so new that they don't have an EP, MP3 or CD yet. To remedy that, we've linked to their myspace streams and included upcoming tour info so you can catch them locally.

This track is quirky and uncharacteristically optimistic. It reveals that Apple can do more than brood. Extraordinary Machine also shows off her vocal chops, which are formidable indeed.

Blame it on CBS, blame it on nostalgia... but we still love old school INXS. While some people may be digging Pretty Vegas, we still think there's no replacement for Michael.

Pop | Amanda Ghost
Download: Silver Lining from Ghost Stories.
Ghost's surname is apropos. Her pipes are haunting, gritty and shorn. That edge combines perfectly with the vulnernable lyrics on this song.
Folk | Tracy Chapman
Download: 3,000 Miles from Where You Live.
Ever since Telling Stories, Chapman has taken a more subdued approach to her music. On 3,000 miles, she muses about the fragile world and her apparent distance from it.
R&B | Prince
Download: S.S.T. from a Katrina benefit album.
S.S.T. stands for Sade's Sweetest Taboo. We dig the Plant Life remix heard on KCRW's Chocolate City, but the original is equally as sweet. Proceeds benefit the Baton Rouge Area Foundation.
