Brush Fire in Angeles National Forest

A brush fire is burning this afternoon in the Angeles National Forest near Little Tujunga Road, according to e-mail and txt alerts. The wildfire has burned 20 acres, and at this time is reportedly about 20% contained. Because the fire falls under the Angeles National Forest (ANF) jurisdiction, the firefighting response requires mutual aid. LA County says there are about 100 firefighters along with air support on scene, and winds are moderate. Earlier today the LAFD worked quickly to put out a small brush fire in Elysian Park.

Santa Ana winds whipped up the Marek / Little Tujunga Canyon Wildfire this morning, forcing school and freeway closures. More than 3,000 acres have burned from Lakeview Terrace to Sylmar including a mobile home park in Lopez Canyon. The 210 Freeway is closed from the 2 to the 118 and LAUSD announced the closure of four schools: Broadous Elementary in Pacoima, Hubbard Elementary in Sylmar, Harding Elementary in Sylmar and Fenton Charter School in Lakeview Terrace.

At least two residences and three motor homes were destroyed this morning in the Marek Wildland Fire, which broke out around 2 a.m. in the rugged Angeles National Forest about 20 miles northeast of downtown LA.

A fire aided by overnight winds broke out around 2 this morning in Little Tujunga Canyon and has already claimed 500 acres of brush and has forced the evacuation of about 1,200 nearby residents. Mandatory evacuations are currently in effect in Kagel Canyon, Lopez Canyon, and Little Tujunga Canyon. Residents of nearby Lakeview Terrace are on the ready, but are not required to evacuate as of yet. The cool temperature was an asset to firefighters who responded to the blaze. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
