Tonight Anaheim-based ska-infused pop outfit No Doubt will be headlining the Gibson Amphitheatre with Grammy-nominated pop punk outfit Paramore and Swedish new wave rockers the Sounds in tow. Soviet-born pop folk singer-songwriter and pianist Regina Spektor is poised to perform to a sold-out crowd at the El Rey Theatre with local indie pop outfit Little Joy (LAist Review). And, lastly, local "fancy pop" songstress Obi Best (LAist Interview, Review, #2) will be gracing the Bootleg Theatre with none other than local singer-songwriter Willoughby. But we strongly suggest heading over to Spaceland to catch English rockers Band of Skulls, who will be ringing in their debut LP—2009's Baby Darling Doll Face Honey. LAist favorites the Useless Keys are slated to kick things off.

Riding high on a tidal wave of media hype, Little Joy (otherwise known as Fabrizio Moretti's new band or Fab's Band) played for a sold out crowd on Sunday night. Being hailed by critics as the next great rock band and blogged to death as the best thing since sliced bread by Strokes fans, who are biding their time while the band is on hiatus, Little Joy had a lot to live up to. Their self titled debut has even appeared on some pretty fancy Best Album of the Year lists. And did they live up to the hype? No, not even close.

Tonight English pop rock sensation Keane will be stopping through the Largo at the Coronet. Topanga Canyon folk rockers the Weepies are slated to headline the Hotel Café. And, lastly, St. Albans' own electro pop outfit Friendly Fires will be rocking out at Spaceland. But we suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch Little Joy. Fab Moretti of the Strokes? Immaculately crafted pop rock gems? Count us in.

Last night, I went to see The New Year play at Spaceland. I’ve liked The New Year since they were Bedhead in the ’90s, so I was pretty excited about it. The New Year (somewhat inexplicably) have four guitars, but there are still a lot of quiet moments in their sets. Unfortunately, every time one of those moments came, all you could hear was people chatting and squawking about their various BS, so that...

So, you're a Silver Lake hipster* who wants to go to the Sunset Junction street fair this weekend without shelling out that $15 no-longer-suggested-donation entrance fee. It's not that you're not into fiscally supporting harmony and diversity in the community blah blah blah, and some old grampa at the Little Joy the other night said that the Cramps alone were well worth that $15, but frankly, you're a little ticked off that you haven't...

TV producer Aaron Spelling, who suffered a stroke on Sunday, died at his home last night. He was 83.

A couple of very cool local artists have an opening this weekend. You might recoginize his work from graffiti and stickers around Echo Park/Silver Lake as well as Spin Magazine, Vans shoes, the hallway at Little Joy and album covers for Brian Jonestown Massacre, the Get Up Kids, New Amsterdams, etc. You might recognize her work from album covers by the Silversun Pickups, Irving and/or hanging on the walls of the Mustard Seed in Los Feliz.

After 18 months of planning and Sisyphean struggles with the city, Safari Sam’s finally opened on Thursday. Located at 5214 W. Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood (with free parking in the 99 Cent Only Store parking lot) it’s half way between the east side venues and the Cahuenga corridor. It’s a cool spot with a Knitting Factory type layout with a wide-open downstairs and an upper mezzanine (still under construction). There’s a large bar in the back and they’re currently serving food (with the Machete restaurant opening on 4/24). The downstairs is about the same size as Spaceland or the Echo but once the upstairs opens the club will hold 465. The stage is higher than most venues (good news for the vertically challenged). The sound system is very crisp and unlike the Knitting Factory, doesn’t get muddy under the overhang. And good news for patrons of bars like Little Joy - the bathrooms are clean and actually have doors on the stalls. Kiss or Kill club is there on Fridays (with the exception of the first Friday of every month). DJ Frankie Chan, who recently broke off from the Dim Mak crew, will start promoting events on Tuesdays in May. The Bellrays are playing their record release party on 5/12.

Got the itch? Get it scratched all over town.

Nothing like a good breakup to set your head spinning, wondering what goddamn freeway to careen your drunk ass off of next. What's the quickest interstate out of Misery, 90042? Hurriedly, you check the show listings on LAist. Q and not U? No, they remind you of your ex. Spending $12 to see 'em would make you too poor to afford late night tacos, bullets or a decent obituary.
