Laura Ling and Euna Lee Freed from North Korean Prison, Headed back to L.A.

Current TV journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee will arrive in Los Angeles tomorrow after a surprise visit by former President Bill Clinton prompted a pardon by Kim Jong II. In June, they were convicted of entering the country illegally and other unspecified "hostile" acts against the country which led to a sentence of 12 years of hard labor.

It was March 17th when Current TV reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee were arrested for illegally entering North Korean territory while working on a story. Today, despite protests around the country, they were charged with 12 years of hard labor.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences puts on a special screening of some recent documentaries at the Linwood Dun Theatre tonight, and it is free. Show begins at 7 PM and will feature the following works: Salim Baba by Tim Sternberg, Weijun Chen's Please Vote for Me and My Kid Could Paint That by Amir Bar-Lev. The films cover unique topics ranging from the life of a man dedicated to helping entertain kids via film to a theoretical free election in China and the works of a four year old art genius.

The idea for Pangea Day was inspired by filmmaker Jehane Noujaim's acceptance speech after winning the TED Prize at the 2006 TED Conference. The global event begins this Saturday at 11:00 a.m. PDT with events in six cities including Los Angeles (Sony Pictures in Culver City) and numerous satellite gatherings. In addition to 24 short films, the four-hour event will include live music and speakers.
