Rum, as all alcohol, is meant for adults. Next year, however, infamous adult star Ron Jeremy is launching his "adult" rum, making him another Johnny-come-lately--or Ronny-come-lately, if you'll indulge--on the celebrity booze scene. Ron de Jeremy, which will be available next month for sale online, is a "well-balanced" 7-year-old Panamanian rum.

L.A.'s Oaxacatown and its Growing Mezcal Liquor Scene
When downtown bar impresario Cedd Moses opened Las Perlas, he was on to something. The downtown Oaxacan-themed bar focuses on not just tequila, but also mezcal, the Mexican hard liquor which KPCC's Adolfo Guzman-Lopez today reports that is gaining popularity in Los Angeles. Also of note is what people these days are calling the Byzantine-Latino Quarter in the area of Pico and Normandie (map). "Historically this used to be Koreatown," says Gabriel Martinez, who immigrated to Los Angeles from Oaxaca, Mexico as a teenager, "but then lately people have been describing it as Oaxacatown."
Make This Drink: Official Cocktail of The Emmy Awards
Whether you're hosting a gathering or drinking alone (we won't judge) for tomorrow evening's live Emmy telecast, you can drink exactly what the attendees will be sipping at the Governor's Ball after the last statuette is handed out.
L.A. Drinkers' Holiday Gift Guide
Everyone knows: When you can't think of what to get someone for Christmas -- whether the host of a holiday house party or the man or woman who has everything -- a safe bet is always booze. The following are some of our favorite liquor-related places and gifts to make it a very merry Christmas indeed.
UCSB Makes Princeton Review Party List, Pepperdine Ranks in Non-Party Lists
So this is how the Princeton Review gets press. University of California, Santa Barbara made the Princeton Review's top 20 schools for partying. Coming in at number 9, they also earned a position as the 4th best school for use of hard liquor. Other California schools making some kind of partying (or lack thereof) list was Claremont McKenna College for wide use of beer consumption (#13), UC-Santa Cruz in the "Reefer Madness" category (#6), Thomas Aquinas College for being "Stone Cold Sober" (#9), Thomas Aquinas College (again) and Pepperdine University undergraduates in Malibu for not using hard liquor, Pepperdine for also avoiding beer (#20) and Thomas Aquinas College for being weedless (#7)
Restaurant Quick Pick: Senor Fred
The Mexican/Spanish restaurant-lounge Senor Fred has cemented its reputation as a Ventura Blvd. hot spot for drinks, but it's also a nice lunch destination for those of you trawling the Sherman Oaks area. The place fulfills at least two requirements of a good Mexican restaurant: spicy salsa that tastes homemade (their version has a nice smoky flavor to it), and strong, simple margaritas. The food is far superior to Mexicali's questionable menu, but about on par with Casa Vega's more traditional interpretations. The ceviche is spicy and tender, if a bit heavy with avocado. For an entree, the cochinita pibil (achoite-marinated, slow-cooked pork) is a winner, while the chile rellanos are a little over-stuffed with cheese.
Cocktail Spotlight: Fraiche's Imperia & Caviar
And I was very surprised by how much I actually enjoyed the taste of this martini. No, it didn't have a fishy taste.
Deacon Booze: LAist Happy Hour
Is it still raining? Seriously? Sigh. Since the wet weather is making me loathe to venture very far away from my office, here's a few happy hour spots in Hollywood that were recommended by reader Klodi B. (Okay, and one in Highland Park, but whatevs.) Anyway, she emailed me with her animal-themed picks. I like emails. I like 'em a whole lot, especially when they are all about cheap booze. Or animals. I'm not picky! So make me happy, won't you? Send your secret spots and recommendations my way at carrie@laist.com.
