Tonight In Rock: Lily Allen, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Voxhaul Broadcast, Har Mar Superstar

Tonight British pop starlet Lily Allen will be performing to a sold-out crowd at the Wiltern with Seattle-based electro pop outfit Natalie's Shaved Head. Local indie rocker Voxhaul Broadcast are poised to grace the Echo with LA's own alt-rockers Olin & the Moon. And, lastly, Minnesotan singer-songwriter Har Mar Superstar, otherwise known as Sean Na Na, will be letting it all hang out at the Bootleg Theater. But we strongly suggest heading over to the El Rey Theatre to catch Louisville-based folk troubadour Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie "Prince" Billy. more ›

LAist's Lindsay's Top Ten Albums of 2007

Everybody's doing it, right? I don't pretend to be hip or edgy or rebellious. I mean, I grew up on Billy Joel and Madonna and Motown and then the Gen Xer's basic dichotomy of KROQ versus Top 40 in the 90s. I find it increasingly harder to fall in love with albums in the downloading age, and am one of those people who obsessively compiles mixed cds for friends and iPod playlists full of individual tracks from a broad sampling of artists. The three places I'm most thankful for getting me turned on to new music would be my fellow LAisters, the awesome site 3hive, and good ol' KCRW. So without further ado, here are my pics for the 2007 releases I most enjoyed: more ›

LAist Interview: Debbie Harry

LAist Interview: Debbie Harry

Listen to the interview here: Deborah Harry is on her way to LA to play the Music Box at the Henry Fonda Theater tomorrow, Friday the 7th. She's got her first new solo album in fourteen years out, Necessary Evil, and you can hear some samples of it at her MySpace. Unfortunately our conversation sounds like I'm contacting her by sat-phone somewhere in Tibet but these are the days of multiline patch-ins so it couldn't... more ›

Raul Campos’ Top Ten Albums of 2007

This week we have been delivering Top 10 lists from KCRW's most popular on-air personalities. Tonight we're going to give you a two-fer. First up is native Los Angeleno Raul Campos, host of Nocturna, and the first one on these lists to give it up to Brit faves Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen. Also if you're scoring at home, Radiohead seems to be doing quite well on these KCRW lists. Have a gander at... more ›

Amy LaVere, Bryan Master and Libbie Schrader @ the Hotel Cafe / Of Montreal @ the Avalon, 11/8/07

Thursday night was a busy one and I probably could've used more of a decompression stop between the Hotel Cafe and the Avalon to give my brain ample time to switch genres, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. It all began at 7 p.m. at the Hotel Cafe with Amy LaVere. I immediately knew I liked her when she took the stage with an upright bass that had a Bass (fish) sticker in the middle of it. It was cheeky, and I suppose that’s one way you can refer to LaVere. She took the stage wearing a trench coat and high heels, and throughout the set alternated between the upright bass and an electric one. more ›

This Week in the World of -Ist

Londonist are starting to think their city is getting just a little bit too expensive, when even Christian Slater can't afford to go out there. And there's no escaping, as local singer Lily Allen discovered when she was barred entry to the US. The British mapping agency caused further bad karma, by blocking a 3-D representation of London in Google Earth. But the smiles returned to Londonist's faces as they interviewed Baroness von Reichardt, who has completely covered her house in mosaic tiles. more ›

5:09 - Cue Vegas-style dancers and an old people's choir singing songs that are deliberately bleeped out. 5:06 - Sarah on Paris Hilton: "To make Paris Hilton more comfortable in jail, I hear they're going to make the bars of her cell out of penises." Big laughs. "I just worry she'll snap her teeth." Even bigger laughs. Cut to a very unamused Paris Hilton. 5:05 - Sarah announces that Paris Hilton will soon be... more ›

Arctic Monkeys to play Troubadour on Sunday

Don't you just love Secret Shows? If you can't make it to Coachella on Friday to see the Arctic Monkeys (who we now know will be sandwiched quite nicely between the Silversun Pickups and the Jesus and Mary Chain on the main stage), the much-hyped Brits will be playing a few days later on Sunday at the historic Troubadour. more ›

Lily Allen Cancels US Tour - Except LA Shows, Coachella, and Bonnaroo

When reviewers of Saturday's KCRW Sounds Eclectic concert yawned at the surprise guest, Travis, they overlooked what they actually had in front of them. Namely the dynamic guitar duo Rodrigo Y Gabriela; and the pouty, sarcastic starlet-of-the-moment Lily Allen. When you have lightening in a bottle one one hand, and an unpredictable foul-mouthed princess on the other - and they both showed up - then you have a successful event. Today it was announced... more ›

Coachella Secret Show: Jesus and Mary Chain at The Glass House the Night Before Coachella

A few years back you might remember when the Pixies did a "secret" show at Pomona's Glass House the night before their big performance at Coachella. Well this year the reformed Jesus and Mary Chain are the special guests at the Glass House on Thursday, April 26. Tickets were made available a few hours ago and LAist picked up a pair just to make sure everything was kosher. And hey it's the real deal,... more ›

Kiss SXSW Good-Bye

Kiss SXSW Good-Bye

Now that I have recovered from nine days and nights at SXSW, I can tell you that it's all downhill from here for the world's greatest music festival. No way could anything top that. 1750 bands and hardly any of them sucked. How does that happen? Plenty of free food, beer, no lines if you had a badge. Stalwarts like The Stooges, Pete Townshend, Robyn Hitchcock, Public Enemy, Peter Case, Rickie Lee Jones, and... more ›

Happy LILY ALLENtines Day! - Lily Allen @ The Henry Fonda Theater, 2/5

Teeming with dolled-up jailbait and smelling like a fraternity house basement, The Music Box at The Henry Fonda Theater was ground zero for trendy sneakers, ballet flats and perky ponytails on February 5th as Lily Allen played a sold-out show at the only LA stop on her MTV-sponsored “Discover and Download” tour. Her album Alright, Still dropped domestically one week prior, and had already taken the #20 spot on the Billboard 200, selling over... more ›

TV Junkie: 'Idol' Returns to Hollywood; New 'House', 'Veronica Mars', and More...

A Word or 51: PBS and NPR have been hyping up the new set of Frontline programs that expose media manipulation. Knee-jerk conservative pundits will have a chance to spew their own conspiracy theories since this week we have the Anti-Surge Resolution in Congress, and the Libby trial - topics both relevant to the program. Tonight - Tuesday - February 13th, 2007 American Idol (Fox, 8:00 p.m.) Done with auditions, the show heads to... more ›

Austinist Lists 240 Bands That Will Be At SXSW

Austinist Lists 240 Bands That Will Be At SXSW

There are really only two major music festivals that truly matter, like really matter: Coachella and South by Southwest. The former happens over two three days in the desert near Palm Springs, the latter rages for about a week on the dusty streets of Austin, Texas. SXSW features over 1,000 bands. You buy a wristband and you wander from bar to bar, club to club, alleyway to patio and you get to see some... more ›

Lily Allen + MTV + LA = Nice Boobs

When MTV sees a cash cow it doesn't look the opportunity in the mouth, it gets the artist in cute clothes and in front of the cameras ASAP. The Lily Allen hype machine has only just begun and LAist is more than happy to be part of the joyful noise. Why? Because when caught between the just-around-the-corner American Idol machine and the let-sleeping-dogs-lie boy band machine that seems to be hibernating, things could be... more ›

Colin Meloy of Decemberists' Top 10 CDs of '06

Colin Meloy might look like just another guy in line at Radio Shack, but he knows no fear. After being called out by Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report for utilizing his trademarked Green Screen effect, Meloy upped the ante -- and on December 20th on Comedy Central, we will all benefit from the “Decemberists vs. Stephen Colbert Guitar Solo Challenge.” more ›
