Sheriff's Deputies Shoot, Kill 3 in Separate Incidents

This weekend's fatal deputy involved shootings brings the total number of such incidents to 13 for 2009. There were five in 2008. Before this weekend, Sheriff Lee Baca called for expedited department investigations into deputy shootings of unarmed suspects after such an incident took place last week in Athens. However, at all three shootings this weekend, guns from the suspects were recovered, according to authorities.

LA County Sheriff Nixes Endorsement of Jack Weiss

Top Sheriff Lee Baca had endorsed both candidates Jack Weiss and Carmen Trutanich for LA City Attorney, but today he only supports one. “I can no longer remain silent about the reckless disregard for the truth that Jack Weiss has brought to this race," Baca said in a statement distributed by the Trutanich camp. "Mr. Weiss’s latest television commercial is desperate and an insult to the principles of the American legal system, our Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Obviously, Mr. Weiss doesn’t respect the truth or our justice system that guarantees a fair trial for everyone. The radical portrayal in his twisted commercial against Mr. Trutanich undermines public trust for the fairness and integrity required by our courts. The lawyers in the City Attorney’s office need a leader who will honor all facets of the justice system.” Ouch.

Raids Shut Down Powerful East L.A. Heroin Ring

An investigation launched last fall into an East Los Angeles drug operation netted 48 arrests of gang members during raids yesterday morning conducted at 38 different locations, the Press-Telegram is reporting. The raid, according to Sheriff Lee Baca "put a heroin ring out of business."

What Would You Rather See Happen? Less Officers or Closed Jails?

For LA County Sheriff Lee Baca, he rather close jails than take officers off the streets. Facing potential cuts in his department, which he says will be around $72 million, he would lean towards releasing inmates early, possibly closing the Men's Central facility (that could mean releasing 4,000). Under his plan, his 10,000-officer force would not decrease other than through attrition and a number of civilian jobs would be cut. But the county's chief executive, William T Fujioka, told the LA Times Baca's story is "irresponsible" because nothing has been set in stone. Fujioka asked many departments for draft budget proposals showing how they would handle a 5% cut, but he said the Sheriff's Department is not one of them.

At first Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca was praised for deciding to allow Fox Reality to make a show about his recruits, since the deal brought in hundreds of thousands of dollars in license fees as well as profits from the series. Hey, why not, right? Get the LA Co. Sheriff's Department's name out there, let America see what they're all about, maybe tempt some fence sitters to join the ranks to get in on the fun of serving, or maybe the fun of being on a reality television show, right?

It's hard to find a good Wookiee these days, so LAPD is looking for a naughty one. A Chewbacca impersonator allegedly sexually assaulted a Marilyn Monroe look-alike near Hollywood and Highland last month, though the crime was just reported yesterday. When authorities showed up to investigate, the suspect fled. Police are presumably looking for a man who is tall, dark, and hairy. There has been no comment from LA County Sheriff Lee Baca, who may...

Tears, shrieks and wails broke out in the LA courtroom where Paris Hilton was sent back to jail just moments ago. Crying, "MOM! MOM! MOM!" the heiress was lead out of the downtown court, the nexus of mayhem, hordes of press, and gaggles of paparazzi. L.A. Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini told the media that Judge Michael T. Sauer had heard from the County Council's office (representing the Sheriff's Dept.), the city attorney, and...

While Paris might be getting her first full night of sleep in her West Hollywood digs, she won't be sleeping in tomorrow morning after gorging on cupcakes, as she has been ordered to go back to court tomorrow at 9 a.m. and face the judge who put her in the clink in the first place. Apparently, even though the Sheriffs department, can alter the terms of a prison sentence (as they did when they...

Sheriff Lee Baca promised that professional party girl Paris Hilton would be treated just like any one else, but lo and behold, just days after she walked into the big hose, she slinked out in the middle of the night after complaining. The Associated Press is saying that she was released for an "unspecified medical problem" but TMZ is reporting that she was let free because jail wasn't agreeing with her nerves. Law enforcement...

In a deft version of doublespeak, LA County Sheriff Lee Baca spoke out of both sides of his mouth today as he prepped the press and paps about what they can expect when Paris Hilton goes to jail on Tuesday. In one breath Baca said that Paris will be treated like any other inmate at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood, saying that her food will be the same as the other women's...

Sources tell TMZ that Lt. That's Sheriff Lee Baca and the State Senate Majority Leader from East Los Angeles, Gloria Romero up there. Should we listen to Baca who says kids should be in school today and parents shouldn't be "hiding behind them" or should we just be following the Senator? She's out walking with her constituents right now.

The LA Times held its first publisher's forum last night with an impressive panel gathered to discuss homelessness. LA Times columnist Steve Lopez, Sheriff Lee Baca, Bobby Shriver (Mayor pro tem of Santa Monica), LAPD Chief William Bratton, Lamp Community head Casey Horan and Dr. Marvin Southard, Director of the LA County Department of Mental Health sat in directors chairs as LA Times Editorial Page Editor Andrés Martinez moderated. That's Martinez in the picture. But first we had a nice opening from the Mayor.

So when the fights first broke out at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic last week, people tried to explain why. Some say that dorm-style jails are at fault. Some blame racial tensions. At one point, a clergy tour of the facility set off a new series of disturbances.

There are now 9 reported dead. According to Sherrif Lee Baca, the derailment happened because of a car deliberately put on the tracks. One train hit the car and jumped off the tracks hitting a parked Pacific Freight Train and an oncoming metrolink train heading in the opposite direction.

Remember Measure A? The one that would have raised taxes to hire more law enforcement officers in LA County? The one that Sheriff Lee Baca pushed hard for, warning of a crime apocalypse on city streets if the proposition failed?
