LAst Night's Action: Pau Returns

LA Lakers defeat Chicago Bulls 108-93. In Pau Gasol’s first game with the Lakers this season, the team looked completely different. It helped that Gasol played like he missed no time scoring six of the Lakers’ first seven points. He led all scorers with 24 points and 13 rebounds. It did cut into Andrew Bynum’s numbers a little who scored 11 points and eight rebounds in 24 minutes. Kobe Bryant scored 21 points overtaking Kareem Adbul-Jabbar for second place in franchise scoring in the process. The Lakers dominated the paint and played a very balanced game.

LAst Night's Action: Kings Beat Panthers for Winning Road Trip

LA Kings defeat Florida Panthers 4-3 (SO). Jack Johnson shoots the winning goal in the shootout as the Kings notch a victory in their last two games on the road for a winning road trip going 3-2-0. The Panthers came out in the second period scoring two goals within two minutes. Johnson would get the Kings in the game with a power play goal halfway in the second period. After Jarrett Stoll knocked evened the game in the third period on a power play goal, the Lightning had a power play opportunity. Randy Jones helped to kill the penalty by scoring a short handed goal for the Kings to take the lead with seconds left in the power play. The win gives the Kings 28 points, second most in the Western Conference.

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Stymied by Rockets, Lose Second Straight

Houston Rockets defeat LA Lakers 101-91. Rockets guard Aaron Brook blistered the Lakers for a career high 33 points as the Rockets ran circles around the Lakers and their sloppy offense. Ron Artest led the Lakers with 22 points while Andrew Bynum scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Kobe Bryant had a human game with 18 points. The Rockets, despite their tallest player barely clearing Prince sans platforms, out-rebounded the Lakers 60-38. That will do you in.

LAst Night's Action: Stanford Pummells USC

Stanford Cardinal defeat USC Trojans 55-21. It wasn’t incredulous to think Stanford could beat USC at home. They did it two years ago as a 41-point underdog. But no one thought it would be this epic. On homecoming day, the Trojans gave up the most points in their 121-year history to Stanford. The Trojans turned the ball over twice in the first quarter resulting in two touchdowns for the Cardinal. Using their power running game fuelled by Toby Gerhart the Cardinal responded each time the Trojans cut the lead to seven...

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Lose a Mile High

Denver Nuggets defeat LA Lakers 105-79. After keeping the game close in the first half, the Lakers were outscored by the Nuggets 29-8 in the third quarter to seal their fate. While Carmelo Anthony was seemingly contained thanks to foul problems in the first half, he exploded in the third quarter scoring 12 points while making the game a laugher. Both Andrew Bynum and Kobe Bryant scored 19 points while Bynum grabbed 15 rebounds.

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Dominate Suns in Pacific Division Clash

LA Lakers defeat Phoenix Suns 121-102. With both teams having only one loss in the Western Conference, this was supposed to be a very good game, but the Lakers decided to make it a laugher. With the Lakers leading 65-55 in the third quarter, they went on a 15-0 run to quash any hope for the Suns in making this a close game. Andrew Bynum in his first game back from sitting two games out with a bad elbow scored 26 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Kobe Bryant added 29 points. Josh Powell and Shannon Brown came off the bench impressively with Powell scoring 14 points in 19 minutes and Brown scoring 10 points in 15 minutes. Also their 78 points in the paint is the most since March 2000.However the Lakers 38.9% free throw shooting and 15 turnovers are causes for concern. With this victory head coach Phil Jackson is now 1,048-436 tying Larry Brown for fifth in NBA victories.

LAst Night's Action: Clips Stung by Hornets

Chicago Blackhawks defeat LA Kings 4-1. The Kings are reeling now losing two straight games in regulation after going 6-0-2. Penalty killing literally killed the Kings as they held strong for two periods holding a 1-1 tie. Third period power play goals by Troy Brouwer and Jonathan Toews blew the game open for the Blackhawks giving them an overall 73-72-21 lead all-time against the Kings. They Kings managed only 18 shots on goal all game including a paltry two shots in the third period. Anze Kopitar managed the only goal for the Kings in the second period giving him a league-leading 28 points making him the player to watch in the league. The loss leaves the four points behind the San Jose Sharks for the division and conference lead.

LAst Night's Action: Lakers Continue to Scrap and Win

LA Lakers defeat Houston Rockets 103-102 (OT). Kobe Bryant scored 41 points, his 98th career game with over 40 points and Andrew Bynum scored 17 points and 17 rebounds as the Lakers clung on for the win. As in the playoffs last season, the Lakers allowed the Rockets easy points in the paint. However they managed to play good defense at the end of the overtime period to take out the Rockets. This was the first game for Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza facing their former teams. Both scored 15 points. Here's a very telling stat for the Lakers that should be of concern. Derek Fisher in 34 minutes scored 0 points going 0-for-5 from the field. Now for some good news. Pau Gasol could return to the starting lineup on Friday in Memphis.

LAst Night's Action: Kings Whoop Sharks, Ducks Can't Hold Wild

LA Kings defeat San Jose Sharks 6-4. The Kings exploded on the reigning President's Cup winner San Jose Sharks jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second period. But then the penalties mounted and the Sharks took advantage scoring four powerplay goals. However 26 seconds after the Shark's Dany Heatley scored that last powerplay goal, Teddy Purcell found the puck after a faceoff and beat goalie Thomas Greiss. Davis Drewskie capped off the scoring with 1:19 remaining on an empty-net goal, the first goal of his NHL career. Center Anze Kopitar scored the fourth goal for the Kings in the second period and notched two assists. It wasn't a pretty game and the Kings need to really work on their penalty kill. But two points is two points for their first win of the NHL season after an embarrassing loss to the Phoenix Coyote on Saturday.

LAst Night's Action: Blue Monday Edition

Seven of eight ESPN "experts" are picking the St. Louis Cardinals to beat the Dodgers. "Baseball Tonight" anchor Karl Ravech is even picking the Cardinals to sweep. The lone dissenter is Eric Neel who is picking the Dodgers in five. I don't get it. Starting Wednesday a new season will begin. What happened in the regular season is irrelevant. So while most people are picking the Cardinals to win because they won the season series 5-2, it means nothing. Just because Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright looked indomitable, it's just hogwash.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Fail Again

Pittsburgh Pirates defeat LA Dodgers 11-1. On their second try to try and clinch the NL West, the Dodgers failed miserably. Only today they had no shot whatsoever. Three baserunning mistakes that led to three outs in the first two innings will not get it done. But then again having a spring training lineup won't help things either. Just to make sure the score was somewhat respectable, Chin-Lung Hu hit a sac fly in the ninth inning with one out to score Orlando Hudson. However a couple of positives come out of this: Vin Scully will now be calling the Dodgers clinch, and the Dodgers will do it in the visiting clubhouse at Petco Park. Sweet!

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Squeak by Nats

LA Dodgers defeat Washington Nationals 7-6. What is it about the Washington Nationals that confound the Dodgers? The Dodgers pounced on rookie starter JD Martin with a four-spot in the first inning thanks to a Manny Ramirez RBI single and a Matt Kemp Earl Weaver. But they allowed the Nationals to come back and eventually tie the game up at six in the sixth inning. But Rafael Furcal led off the eighth inning with a solo shot to put the game out of the way. Furcal was a triple short of the cycle while Kemp was a double short of the cycle. Furcal now has two consecutive games of four-hit ball, and Kemp with his homer in the first inning collected his 100th RBI. Kemp and Andre Ethier become the first Dodgers duo to have 100 RBI since 2001 when Shawn Green and Gary Sheffield. With the Rockies loss to the Padres the Dodgers magic number for the NL West is four.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Fall to Nats

Washington Nationals defeat LA Dodgers 5-4. Chad Billingsley made his first start in since September 13, and he didn’t look to shabby. In fact in five innings he had a no-hitter going. But in the sixth inning, his usual trouble inning, he walked two and then gave up his first hit to Ryan Zimmerman. Unfortunately that hit was a homer that screamed its way out into the Dodgers bullpen. After the Nationals took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the eighth, shortstop Christian Guzman committed two errors to allow the Dodgers to tie the game. With a runner on third in the bottom of the ninth, Pete Orr hit a sac fly to Andre Ethier in right field who muffed the ball which is inconsequential since the runner was going to score anyhow. Thanks to the Rockies losing, the Dodgers REAL magic number is reduced to six.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Pounce on Nats

LA Dodgers defeat Washington Nationals 14-2. The danger of this series against the Washington Nationals was demonstrated last season. The Dodgers were swept on the road by the Nats. I normally would have been worried about this, but having been in the Dodger clubhouse for a lot of the season I know these guys are focused. And boy did they show it when they batted around the fourth and seventh innings. Rafael Furcal went 4-for-5 driving in four runs and scoring twice, and the scoring parade allowed Jason Repko, Blake DeWitt, Chin-Lung Hu and Juan Castro to play some extended innings.

LAst Night's Action: Angels Continue to Dominate Yanks

LA Angels defeat NY Yankees 5-2. While the Angels probably won't overtake the Yankees for the best record in the American League, they showed they can still dominate the bombers. Aside from solo home run shots from Alex Rodriguez and Hideki Matsui, Angels starter Joe Saunders kept the Yankees quiet through 8 1/3 innings. In fact the Yankees were 0-for-11 with runners on base. The Angels got to Yankees starter Andy Pettitte in the first inning with back-to-back RBI doubles by Vladimir Guerrero and Torii Hunter. At a 90-60 record, both the Angels and the Dodgers have identical records. If both teams make the playoffs it will mark just the third time both teams have played in October. They previously did this in 2004 and 2008.

LAst Night's Action: Angels Outpitch Rangers

LA Angels defeat Texas Rangers 2-0. The score would seem to dictate this was a quick moving game, but quite the contrary happened. Walks and foul balls kept this game a three-hour grinder. Scott Kazmir went six shutout innings for the Angels yielding only six hits and no walks. Torii Hunter got the Angels on the board in the first inning with an RBI single scoring Maicer Izturis from second base. Although it would be the only run the Angels would need Vladimir Guerrero provided some insurance in the top of the third with a lead off booming home run. The Angels bullpen yielded only two hits and two walks in the three innings they pitched. This win gives the Angels a 7 1/2 game buffer in the NL West.

LAst Night's Action: Angels Finally Defeat Red Sox

LA Angels defeat Boston Red Sox 4-3. With the game tied 3-3, Howie Kendrick hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give the Halos a 4-3 lead. The question would remain whether the Angels would let a one run lead slip away in the bottom of the ninth. After Kevin Jepsen got Jason Bay to strike out to lead off the bottom of the ninth, closer Brian Fuentes was brought in to face David Ortiz. Contrary to Wednesday night's proceedings, Fuentes would strike Ortiz out. Although Fuentes would give up a single to Mike Lowell, he got pinch hitter Rocco Baldelli to pop up to salvage a game for the Angels.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers, Angels Squeak Through

LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 5-4. Chad Billingsley got racked for four runs on eight hits and three walks in the six innings he pitched against the DBacks. In that time the Dodgers managed to score a run in the first inning thanks to Andre Ethier's double. But after that, they tied a franchise record by hitting into five double plays. But in the eighth inning they patched together six singles and a walk to score four runs against three separate pitchers while managing to avoid the double play. While it was a great come from behind victory for the Blue, it by no means alleviates concerns of their inconsistent offense.

LAst Night's Action: Angels Squeak Right Through

LA Angels defeat Kansas City Royals 2-1. Royals pitching confounded the Angels most of the night. Instead of seeing Gil Meche who had to be scratched because of shoulder fatigue, they got Robinson Tejada. With one out in the first inning, Maicer Izturis hit a single. From there Tejada retired the following 15 batters. Finally in the eighth inning Vladimir Guerrero came through on a bases loaded single that scored two. Jered Weaver kept the affair close only giving up one run in the fourth inning. He went seven innings giving up nine hits and an intentional walk with six strikeouts.

LAst Night's Action: Hernandez Overwhelms Kazmir

Seattle Mariners defeat LA Angels 3-0. Scott Kazmir, looking to impress his new team in his first outing, did an admirable job through six innings pitching shut out ball. However in the seventh inning he led the inning off by walking Mike Sweeney. After Adrian Beltre flew out to center, Bill Hall doubled scoring Sweeney ending Kazmir's night. Sweeney ended up scoring in the next at-bat when stealing third catcher Mike Napoli made a throwing error. Felix Hernandez however was lights out pitching eight innings while giving up only four hits and three walks. Although King Felix had runners on the basepads all day, he was able to get out of every jam. The Angels lost two of three games in this series and now head over to Kansas City.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Win and Lose

Arizona Diamondbacks defeat LA Dodgers 5-3 (10). Yeah the Dodgers lost the game. The newest Dodger as of 9:00 pm Ronnie Belliard made a great impression with the fans by hitting a solo homer in his first at-bat. Manny Ramirez and Matt Kemp hit back-to-back solo shots in the sixth inning. But the DBacks would come back to win it.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Power Rox Back To Three

LA Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies 6-1. Andre Ethier hit two homers and James Loney hit a three-run tater to power the Dodgers over the Rockies. Ethier hit a homer in the first inning after Matt Kemp walked and hit a solo shot to lead off the fourth inning. After Manny Ramirez was hit by a pitch and Casey Blake walked Loney hit his shot in the same inning. At that point the Dodgers had only three hits, the three homers. While it's easy to get very excited about this power surge, keep in mind the Rockies were forced to start Josh Fogg who has been a reliever all season. This gives the Dodgers a three game lead over the Rockies again.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Enter Danger Zone

Colorado Rockies defeat LA Dodgers 5-4 (10). On June 3, the Rockies trailed the Dodgers by 15 1/2 games. With their victory over the Dodgers Tuesday night that deficit has shrunk to two games. The Dodgers led off the first inning with Andre Ethier doubling in Matt Kemp taking a 1-0 lead. Casey Blake would extend the lead to two with a solo shot in the fourth. But the Rockies would come back in home half of the fourth when with Todd Helton on second Brad Hawpe hit a homer to center field. They would add a run in the seventh and eighth inning for a 4-2 lead going into the top of the ninth. With closer Huston Street unavailable to pitch for the Rockies, manager Jim Tracy instead went with Rafael Betancourt, Joe Beimel and Matt Daley in the ninth inning resulting the Dodgers tying the game 4-4. Thanks to a James Loney throwing error in the bottom of the 10th the Rockies loaded the bases on James McDonald. Troy Tulowitski would bloop a single to bring in the winning run.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Lose Again, Angels Win Again

LA Angels defeat Baltimore Orioles 8-5. The Angels used the long ball to beat the Orioles in the final game of their four-game series. Vladimir Guerrero with homers in the sixth inning with one on and in the seventh inning with two on notched his 38th multi-homer game in his career. Maicer Izturis also homered in the sixth inning to help give starting pitcher Ervin Santana the victory. Santana went six innings giving up three runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts. While Darren Oliver pitched two innings of perfect ball, Jose Arredondo came in the ninth inning with an 8-3 lead and gave up a homer to Melvin Mora after walking Matt Wieters with one out. After getting Ty Wigginton to fly out, Arredondo gave up a triple to pinch hitter Nolan Reimold. Manager Mike Scioscia having seen enough brought in closer Brian Fuentes to get the final out and the save. The Angels take three of four games in the series and now go to Cleveland.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Fall Short against Giants

San Francisco Giants defeat LA Dodgers 4-2 (10 innings). With Tim Lincecum starting for the Giants and the Dodgers countering with a string of bullpen pitchers, things didn't look good for the Dodgers. However the Dodgers hung in tight down 2-1 in the top of the ninth. After a questionable safe call to Rafael Furcal at first who then tagged up to second on Russell Martin's deep fly ball to center, Andre Ethier hit an RBI single to tie the game. But Guillermo Mota in the 10th inning would give up a two-run walk off to Juan Uribe (of all people) to give the Giants a win. In the fifth inning with Pablo Sandoval at the plate, Jame McDonald made a pitch inside. Sandoval took exception taking a couple of steps towards the mound pointing his bat at McDonald while yammering. Martin tried to get at Sandoval protecting his pitcher leading to a benches-clearing scuffle. Once order was restored no ejections were issued. By the way that pitch was called a strike.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Rout Giants

LA Dodgers defeat San Francisco Giants 9-1. "It's all over at AT&T," Vin Scully proclaimed after Matt Kemp hit an Earl Weaver to give the Dodgers a 9-1 lead in the seventh inning. "Sorry, wrong number for the Giants." In the fifth inning with Rafael Furcal on first, Russell Martin hit a grounder up the middle fielded behind the back by Giants starter Joe Martinez. What looked like a sure double play was muffed by second baseman Eugenio Velez at second leaving both Furcal and Martin safe. Andre Ethier and Manny Ramirez would hit back-to-back doubles and James Loney would single in Manny giving the Dodgers a four-run inning. In the seventh inning Manny would hit a two-run homer and Kemp hit his three-run shot to deflate the sold out crowd in San Francisco. The Dodgers with this win break the streak of three straight losing series.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Love the NL West

LA Dodgers defeat San Francisco Giants 4-2. Well if only the Dodgers could play the NL West all 162 games. Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda made only one mistake that Travis Ishikawa took out over the right field wall. The Dodgers took out their frustration in the fourth inning when with the bases loaded Matt Kemp hit a bases-clearing double. Mark Loretta would hit a single to score Kemp. All was quiet until the bottom of the ninth when Jonathan Broxton gave up a home run to Bengie Molina with on out then gave up a single to Randy Winn to bring up the tying run at the plate. But Fred Lewis would ground into a force out at second and Ryan Garko would ground to second to end the game. Before the game it was announced the Chad Billingsley was scratched from his start on Wednesday.

LAst Night's Action: Dodger Come Back Falls a Little Short

Milwaukee Brewers defeat LA Dodgers 6-5. Coming off of some rather remarkable starts, Dodgers starter Clayton Kershaw lost his form. Actually he got through the first three innings without giving up a hit, but in the fourth inning he walked in two runs with the bases loaded to give the Dodgers the lead for good. In the sixth inning with Jeff Weaver pitching Brewers leftfielder Ryan Braun put the game away with an Earl Weaver shot to left center. Brewers starter Manny Parra pitched his longest outing of the season - eight innings - giving up two runs on six hits and a walk. But the ninth inning came and he gave up a single and double to Casey Blake and Matt Kemp. Longtime Dodger foil Trevor Hoffman came in to save the game but promptly gave up a double to James Loney to score Blake and Kemp. Orlando Hudson would single to right sending Loney home. The Dodgers would load the bases with Manny Ramirez at bat. Manny flew to right ending the game and the come back.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Lose Thrice

St. Louis Cardinals defeat LA Dodgers 10-0. Chad Billingsley started out strong for the Dodgers pitching a one-hit shutout after five innings. Then the sixth inning happened. Billingsley crumbled giving up two two-run singles and one one-run single. After the dust settled, the Cards put a six-spot on the Dodgers. After Claudio Vargas got two out in the eighth inning with a runner on third, Brent Leach came in and got no outs allowing the runner on third to score (run charged to Vargas) and giving up three more on his own.

LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Stumble in St. Louis

St. Louis Cardinals defeat LA Dodgers 6-1. For the second game in a row the Dodgers have gotten 10 or more hits yet lost a game. Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter was just that good. Although he gave up nine Dodgers hits he allowed only one run in seven innings pitched striking out two and walking two. Dodgers starter Randy Wolf had a decent outing going six innings giving up only two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. The Dodgers were in the game trailing 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh when James McDonald came into a game and had his first pitch taken out of the park by Mark DeRosa. Although Albert Pujols would hit a single only to get thrown out trying to advance to second by Matt Kemp, Matt Holliday would reach first thanks to a throwing error by third baseman Casey Blake. After Ryan Ludwick flew out to Kemp and Yadier Molina walked, Brent Leach came in for the Dodgers and gave up an RBI single to Rick Ankiel and Guillermo Mota gave up a 2 RBI double to Brendan Ryan. That was all she wrote.
