Toronto Maple Leafs defeat Anaheim Ducks 5-2. After Francois Beauchemin gave the Ducks the 1-0 lead, in a span of 19 seconds the Maple Leafs went from tying the game on a Tyler Bozak power-play goal to getting the lead by Clarke MacArthur thanks to a sloppy turnover by the Ducks.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Still Can't Win
LAst Night's Action: USC Beats Pac-12 South Champion
USC Trojans defeat UCLA Bruins 50-0. So there you saw the Pac-12 South Champions get their asses handed to them by the team that ends the season in first place in the Pac-12 South. Thanks to the NCAA, that sentence is not only factual but completely logical. Go figure.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Look Up at the Stars
Dallas Stars defeat LA Kings 3-2 (OT). After withstanding a Dallas flurry at the start of the second period, the Kings scored twice in just over 30 seconds: Mike Richards extending his career-high five-game goal streak and Kevin Westgarth with his first career goal. The last King to have a five-game scoring streak was Dustin Brown who had a six-game streak from Jan. 17 to Jan. 31, 2009. But with 20 seconds from a win, Loui Eriksson scored off of a neutral zone faceoff win to send the game to overtime. Steve Ott gave the Stars the overtime win.
LAst Night's Action: No Blues for the Kings
Mike Richards with a goal and an assist helps lead the Kings to their fifth victory in seven games. Jonathan Bernier in his first start since Nov. 8 gave up a shaky goal in the first shot of the game. But he recovered to save 23 shots including 14 in the second period.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Sweep Home-and-Home Against Ducks
Perhaps the Ducks’ success in Los Angeles Wednesday night was due to goaltender Jonas Hiller. Against Dan Ellis in the pipes, the Kings got two five-on-five goals, two short-handed goals and a power-play goal en route to their 5-3 win over the Ducks. And for the very first time, the Kings have defeated the Ducks on consecutive nights.
LAst Night's Action: Middle Tennessee Overwhelms Bruins
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders defeat UCLA Bruins 86-66. Middle Tennessee must really love Southern California. After beating Loyola Marymount on Sunday, they take a stinky dump all over the Bruins in their septic tank of an arena.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Score Four in Second Period, Clings to Victory against Vancouver
Anaheim Ducks defeat Vancouver Canucks 4-3. The Ducks did Friday night what the Kings couldn’t do Thursday night: beat the Canucks. Despite a four-goal second period with Jonas Hiller shutting out the Canucks to that point, the Ducks barely hung on when Vancouver outshot Anaheim 22-2 in that final period with goals by Kevin Bieksa and two by Jannik Hansen.
LAst Night's Action: Hiller Coughs Up Ducks Lead
Washington Capitals defeat Anaheim Ducks 5-4 (OT). This loss cannot be blamed on the Ducks offense. After struggling to generate any sort of offense going 1-4-1 on their last six games (including 1-2-1 on this current road trip), the second “Finnish” line came up big with Andrew Cogliano joining Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu.
LAst Night's Action: Dan Ellis Saves Ducks in San Jose
Anaheim Ducks defeat San Jose Sharks 3-2. The Sharks’ pregame show was happy that Ducks’ no. 1 goaltender Jonas Hiller was given the day off to be replaced by Dan Ellis. All Ellis did was make 41 saves, 15 of which came in a third period that saw the Ducks get very sloppy. The Ducks are now 4-1-0 early in this season.
LAst Night's Action: Kings Dig Deep in Philly
LA Kings defeat Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 (OT). It is hard to blame the Kings for not playing their best hockey. They opened the season playing two games in Europe and are finishing two games on the East Coast. In fact they haven’t been in Southern California since Sept. 30. But the Kings dug in and snuck out of the Wells Fargo Center with the win with the aid of the returning son Mike Richards.
LAst Night's Action: Ducks Shake off Sharks, Rust
Anaheim Ducks defeat San Jose Sharks 1-0. Neither team played since Saturday. However with the Ducks had an excuse: they played two in Europe. The Sharks opened the season at home last Saturday and has rested since then. So what’s their excuse?
LAst Night's Action: Kings Not Quick in Shootout
New Jersey Devils defeat LA Kings 2-1 (SO). I don’t know what is more shocking: that Kings’ goalie Jonathan Quick lost a game in the shootout or that Devils’ left-winger Ilya Kovalchuk led all players in icetime with 29:37.
LAst Night's Action: Prince Averts Disaster for UCLA
UCLA Bruins defeat Washington State Cougars 28-25. Call it a failure of Washington State’s offense to complete drives. Call it UCLA’s defense playing big when it counted. Call it a complete rebirth of quarterback Kevin Prince. But UCLA gets back to the .500 mark overall and 2-1 in the Pac-12 eking out a victory over the Cougars.
LAst Night's Action: THE NHL IS BACK!!!
The two Richards were the biggest offseason headlines: Mike Richards shockingly traded by the Philadelphia Flyers to the Kings, and the biggest free agent center Brad Richards after being wooed eventually settling with the Rangers. Tinsel Town vs. Broadway. So it was completely appropriate it was the two Richards that stood in the faceoff circle to start the game.
LAst Night's Action: The Best Night of Regular Season Baseball Ever
When people find out I write about sports the question invariably comes up: what sport do you like the most? I always answer baseball which elicits strange looks. It’s as though they feel I’m strange because baseball is an old-timey sport that drags and is boring. After what happened on this final day of the baseball season, I hope people finally understand.
LAst Night's Action: Matt Kemp's 40-40 Vision, Angels Death March, Simmonds Fag Watch
LA Dodgers defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 4-2. The Dodgers sent a press release this afternoon that summarized Clayton Kershaw’s Cy Young season. With 21 wins, 2.28 ERA and 248 strikeouts, Kershaw will most likely become the third Dodger pitcher to win the Triple Crown with Dazzy Vance (1924) and Sandy Koufax (1963, 1965, 1966).
LAst Night's Action: Clayton Kershaw Wins 21st and Triple Crown Lead, Kemp Still Chasing Triple Crown
LA Dodgers defeat San Diego Padres 6-2. Clayton Kershaw completed his Cy Young season with a 21-5 record, 2.28 ERA and 248 strikeouts with his 7 1/3 inning effort in San Diego having at least a share of the lead in each of the triple crown categories.
LAst Night's Action: Trojans Get Horned
Arizona State defeat Sun Devils defeat USC Trojans 43-22. You could sense this lurking in the shadows for the Trojans. They had a hard time closing out Minnesota and Utah in the first two weeks of the season. While they looked dominant last week, it was against an awful Big East team in Syracuse.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Choke Away October Hopes
Oakland Athletics defeat LA Angels 3-1. There is one word to describe the remaining teams fighting for playoff spots: choke. As bad as the Boston Red Sox have choked in September, it’s not like the Tampa Bay Rays or the Angels have lined right up there to overtake the Sox.
LAst Night's Action: Trojans Have Another Cardiac Win
Against a more formidable opponent than the Golden Gophers of Minnesota, it looked to be more of the same for the Trojans: the Trojans should have had a commanding lead in the fourth quarter only to be denied by their own hubris.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers and Angels Duel Away for Wins
On this Friday night, we were treated to two pitching duels with both the Angels and the Dodgers defeat the Yankees and Giants respectively 2-1. It seemed like a karmic gift for suffering through this little heat wave in Southern California this week.
LAst Night's Action: The Return of the NFL
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and holy shitballs is my heart fonder of the NFL right now.
The NFL schedulers were geniuses in scheduling the New Orleans Saints to visit the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers. After the threat of a lost season, people don’t want to see 3-2 defensive quagmires. They want to see offense, offense and more offense. With the Packers beating the Saints 42-34, this game delivered.
LAst Night's Action: Angels Win a Sad Indictment on Team
You know what’s sad? As anemic as the 2011 Angels have been, they might still make the playoffs. The only tough teams left on their schedule is this weekend’s three-game stand against the Yankees and the final three games of the season against the Rangers both at Angel Stadium.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Drown Nats
I don’t know if anyone realized that today was Stephen Strasburg’s season debut for the Nationals. Just about a month ahead of schedule from Tommy John surgery and limited to 60 pitches, he really packed the Washington crowd into the stadium. All 29,092 of them. Well, maybe the shitty weather dictated the attendance more than anything else, but still.
LAst Night's Action: It's All About Preparation
One of the causes of hemorrhoids is increased intra-abdominal pressure - in other words, too much straining. With all the clenched assholes around USC and UCLA during their first games of the season, I certainly hope both programs have a healthy stock of Preparation-H.
LAst Night's Action: It Was a Good Friday in Sports
It was a good Friday in sports. Hope that appeared dead suddenly sprang back to life.
Let’s start with the local kids the Dodgers. Against a playoff-bound Atlanta Braves team, the Dodgers trail 5-0 by the third inning. It really made me rethink what I wrote on Wednesday about the Dodgers offense. Perhaps they did really well since they played the likes of San Diego, Colorado and a down St. Louis team. Perhaps all of this offense had been an illusion.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Sweep Birds, Angels Sweep Chi Sox
LA Dodgers defeat St. Louis Cardinals 9-4. “Where the hell was all of the run support earlier in the season you assholes?!” If I were Dodgers’ starter Hiroki Kuroda, that’s exactly what I would say to every position player. But of course Kuroda is a much nicer person than I, so I’m sure he’s just happy to be able to exhale a bit on the mound. Well as much as one can relax in the middle of the St. Louis 97-degree-plus-humidity weather summer day without melting one’s cleats.
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Bash Red Birds
LA Dodgers defeat St. Louis Cardinals 13-2. The Libyans took control over Muammar Gaddafi’s compound. There was a 5.8 earthquake in Virginia that could be felt all along the East Coast as they prepare for Hurricane Irene. The Dodgers bid adieu to catcher Dioner Navarro due to “philosophical differences”. So it just followed that the Dodgers would vomit up runs like a bloated supermodel wannabe after Thanksgiving.
LAst Night's Action: Tony La Russa Saves Dodgers
LA Dodgers defeat St. Louis Cardinals 2-1. It’s called the Tony La Russa Syndrome. It’s what happens to managers who tinker with the lineup to the point of absurdity in the hopes of being called a genius. The long-term symptom of this syndrome is the squeezing of fun from the game. It could also lead to completely fucking up World Series (see 1988 and 1990.)
LAst Night's Action: Dodgers Explode in Rainy Denver
LA Dodgers defeat Colorado Rockies 8-2. No Andre Ethier, no problems for the Dodgers in Coors Field. Out of the lineup with an infected big toe, the Dodgers used Tony Gwynn, Jr., Justin Sellers and Aaron Miles ahead of MVP candidate Matt Kemp in the cleanup spot. It wasn’t a lineup that inspired a lot of confidence.
