Random Bag Checks by Sheriff's on Metro? Yes.

Apparently, Los Angeles County Sheriff's have been doing random bag checks for Metro since March, according to Damien Newton at StreetsblogLA. Metro staff emphasized to him that the searches are legal, after he spoke to them when a reader witnessed it happening to commuters entering the Gold Line platform at Union Station. Notes Newton: "When Metrolink announced it was going to begin randomly searching passengers' belongings last summer, there was a firestorm of protest. After the horrific crash last September, the agency came under fire for spending money Keeping Us Safe from Terrorists instead of improving rail safety."

LAPD & LASD Prepared for Lakers to Win, to Stop Happy Riots

Last night's win already caused people to run amok in East LA. And even though Sunday night's game is in Orlando, should the Lakers win the Championship, the LAPD and LA County Sheriff's say they are prepared, citing the win 2000 when 11 people were arrested and close to a million dollars in damage was caused on downtown streets. Yeah, police cars were torched.

What Would You Rather See Happen? Less Officers or Closed Jails?

For LA County Sheriff Lee Baca, he rather close jails than take officers off the streets. Facing potential cuts in his department, which he says will be around $72 million, he would lean towards releasing inmates early, possibly closing the Men's Central facility (that could mean releasing 4,000). Under his plan, his 10,000-officer force would not decrease other than through attrition and a number of civilian jobs would be cut. But the county's chief executive, William T Fujioka, told the LA Times Baca's story is "irresponsible" because nothing has been set in stone. Fujioka asked many departments for draft budget proposals showing how they would handle a 5% cut, but he said the Sheriff's Department is not one of them.

An estimated 2,500 to 3,000 people gathered protested in the streets of West Hollywood and Hollywood last night (as well as in San Francisco). "Maybe losing a right was what our community needed to get us out of the bars and into the streets, but I feel more energized than ever tonight," wrote blogger Boi from Troy who left the march early when the LAPD showed up. "Things started getting tense, as the crowd was blocked in on both sides by LAPD... LAPD’s mistake was stopping the crowd rather than directing it back to West Hollywood. LAPD went on tactical alert, which seemed like an over-reaction, when they should have coordinated with the Sheriff, which handled things well."

This Monrovia man was arrested last week at Disneyland following a five-day crime spree that began on September 19th. After carjackings, home-invasion robberies and an attempted murder, the 27-year-old Anthony Hislar visited Disneyland with a couple of people before his arrest just outside the park (was he there rewarding himself or something?). LA County Sheriff's tipped off the Anaheim Police saying that Hislar was at the park. Police found him leaving the park and followed him from there.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Bomb Squad is en route to an overpass at Valley Circle Blvd. and the 101 Freeway in Calabasas at the Los Angeles city border. The California Highway Patrol is considering closing all lanes of the freeway on both sides pending the opinion of the bomb squad, according to Heather Hoglund of the CHP over the phone.

Two brawls between surfers and paparazzi over the weekend are leading Malibu officials to look more closely into the law regarding 1st amendment rights. Taking a note from a Los Angeles bicycle law, the city of West Hollywood has made the first steps to allow bicycles to legally ride on sidewalks, reports WeHo News. Currently, West Hollywood's law is consistent with LA County law stating that “a person shall not operate any bicycle… on any sidewalk or parkway except at a permanent or temporary driveway or at specific locations thereon where the commissioner finds that such locations are suitable for and has placed appropriate signs or markings, permitting such…riding.”

There's something similar about Weeds on Showtime and today's marijuana bust in the Santa Clarita Valley. If you watch the TV show and know the SCV, you know that it is filmed there (opening credits are very much the neighborhood of unincorporated Stevenson Ranch).

Three Los Angeles Sheriff Department (LASD) deputies assigned to the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown are suspended (or, paid leave, that is) as a criminal investigation is opened into accusations from an inmate saying that he was isolated by them, punched and pepper-sprayed in the anus and scrotum area. It all started when inmate Alejandro Franco, 23, who is there for "allegedly violating terms of his probation for a domestic violence conviction," swore at a deputy when he requested a clean shirt and was refused.

About 45 minutes after the argument, three deputies removed him from his cell, handcuffed him and took him to a recreation area away from other inmates, Franco said.

While you were minding your own business, Mel Gibson, the LA Sheriff's Department were making sport of their power - arresting people and messing with gang members - simply to rack up points during in-house games and contests. One recent competition, described in an internal Sheriff's Department e-mail obtained by The Times, was called "Operation Any Booking." The object was to arrest as many people as possible within a specific 24-hour period. Other one-day...

Over the weekend, the anonymous "scribes" at Martini Republic voiced a complaint common to many: "The City of LA’s continued shakedown of its own citizens continues apace. The foto-tickets cost about $365, and are very tough to fight (a day off work, a drive to Compton), even though cops snicker when they see that one has popped up in your life: 'Those lights are almost always wrong,' they say." Will someone explain to me...
