One of the most exciting things to do in the summer is to go see some shows at the Hollywood Bowl. It has a variety of classical and popular shows and has been known to bridge the gap between the two genres with their collaborations between artist and orchestra (Remember this?). This season marks the end for Salonen as a music director and has added two talented conductors Bramwell Tovey and Thomas Wilkins. This season......

Pickle just about anything at the Machine Project tonight. / Photo by ccarlstead via flickr. Sure there are a lot of places closed for President’s Day, but nightlife does exist in LA...even tonight: FILM Roman Polanski’s Chinatown focuses on an intricate water scandal and an even more twisted family backstory. Starring John Huston, Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson as Detective Jake Gittes – the city of Angels plays a major part of this nourish......

Rain rain has gone away...so Tuesday we'll go out to play. Here's what's going on around town tonight: MUSIC The LA Phil’s Concrete Frequency series continues tonight. “Songs of the City” is being billed as a program where “urban troubadours share lo-fi songs about city life.” We’ll believe it with a lineup that features: Marc Bianchi, Biirdie, Franklin Bruno, Zooey Deschanel, John Doe, Inara George, Stevie Jackson, Sondre Lerche, Kyp Malone, Bob Mould, Zach......

The pairing of rock and classical orchestration has become an interesting and exciting trend in the past few years. The Los Angeles Philharmonic has become a "backup" band of sorts to the likes of Air, Belle and Sebastian, the Decemberists and now Bright Eyes, providing a unique, one of a kind listening experience that sometimes seems a perfect fit while other times a bit off. The Bright Eyes experience was my first in this......

For the past 16 years, as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience, they have been presenting free neighborhood concerts in the community at churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California. The series for this year begins this week in San Gabriel. The Latin-flavored program includes Bizet’s Suite No. 1 from Carmen; Falla’s Suite from El amor brujo; Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No.......

This didn’t gather the same kind of attention of a Stradivarius theft, but in late December, two rare violins were burgled from the home of Mark Kashper, a violinist for the LA Philharmonic. The instruments, one made by Carlo Tononi, and one by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume together were valued around two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Today, French authorities announced they had recovered the instruments, and nabbed an American in Paris who was trying to......

photo of Belle and Sebastian with the LA Philharmonic by chotda Slowly creeping my way down Highland Boulevard in some of the worst LA traffic I've ever experienced, almost completely surrounded by my soon-to-be fellow audience members, I was mentally preparing myself for a night consisting of sweet little diddies and teen misfit anthems from not only Belle and Sebastian, but Belle and Sebastian backed by the LA Philharmonic, with The Shins opening for......

Of the hundreds of shows going down in LA this week, heres two that we're thinking about checking out. The Grates at Spaceland tonight. Giddy, fun, silly, and adorable, the Aussie quartet was recently in Vancouver in support of their new record "Gravity Wont Get You High" where they charmed the locals: Near the end of their set, Patience got off the stage and sang "Rock Boys" while waving around one of those ribbons......

Tomorrow is Bastille Day, and even though we're thousands of miles from France, we're feeling all warm and frenchy with the addition of Parisist to our family, and are ready to say "Vive La France!" LA style. We could always take an all-American and classic Angeleno approach, and celebrate with a picnic (with Brie, French bread, some chocolate, and plenty of French wine, bien sur) and a show at the Hollywood Bowl. Tomorrow night's......

Let’s face it, we don’t know where or upon whose neck the axe will fall on this Tuesday’s election. We’re not even sure if it matters who wins. The world has gone to pot. Oh wait, the world has always been fucked up. No. Yes. In any case, Skylight Books in Los Feliz has been fighting for you for eight dense years, fighting for your mind and your freedom to buy subversive texts without......
