Tonight In Rock: Them Crooked Vultures, King Khan And BBQ Show, Loch Lomond, LAKE

Tonight LA-based rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures, which is comprised of Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, John Paul Jones and Alain Johannes, will be headlining the Wiltern. Québécois garage rock duo King Khan and BBQ Show are poised to grace the Troubadour with none other than Tennessee-based country/rockabilly trio Those Darlins (Esh CANCELED!) And, lastly, Olympia-bred lo-fi pop outfit LAKE will be taking on the Smell in Downtown. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Bootleg Theater to catch Portland-based experimental folk rock quintet Loch Lomond. LAist favorites, fellow Oregonians Horse Feathers are slated to perform as well. more ›

Keeping California Free of Zebra and Quagga Mussels

Keeping California Free of Zebra and Quagga Mussels

Chicago in the 90s experienced something quite drastic one summer--thousands of dead fish were washed ashore as a result of the relatively new freshwater critters in town. Zebra and Quagga Mussels had been making there way through the Great Lakes system since the late 1980s and while the end results for a breach goer meant stunningly crystal clear water, the ecosystem was shifted. Come January 17th, 2007, the first of these mussels in California were found in Lake Havasu. more ›

Tonight In Rock: Robyn, Everest, Jack's Mannequin, Kenan Bell

Tonight LA offers a bevy of options that make our show-going brain hurt. We've got the conclusion of the usual free Monday Night Residencies. Kenan Bell will be performing one final night with the Morning Benders and White Arrows at Spaceland. Rademacher and the Western States Motel (LAist Interview) will be wrapping up shop at the Echo with One Trick Pony and Seasons. And Manhattan Murder Mystery will be doing the same with Princeton (LAist Interview) and Divisadero at Mr. T's Bowl. But we're going to try to tackle two shows. How? Well, we'll start things off in the heart of Downtown at the Smell with the jazz-infused pop rock group LAKE and then continue the rather tranquil evening over in K-town at R Bar with LA's own alt-rockers Everest, who will be playing around 9:30 PM. The secret password? "hilljack" more ›

Weird Los Angeles: Lake Monster?

Weird Los Angeles: Lake Monster?

Los Angeles may have the largest populus, but within its history lurks several anomalies which defy the hustle and bustle of city life. Elizabeth Lake, located close to Palmdale in "north county" was once inhabited by one of these anomalies. It is said that the old lake, one of ten named Elizabeth in California, was created by the Devil who bestowed upon the waters one of his demonic pets, that being a diabolical beast. more ›

Photo Essay: Sunrise over Lake Balboa

Photo Essay: Sunrise over Lake Balboa

When you drive north on Balboa from the 101, you may notice a constant stream of joggers and runners passing on the right. If you turn in the driveway there, you will stumble upon one of the valley's hidden gems. Lake Balboa was built in the 1990s (in Encino) and attracts a surprising array of birds and other small wildlife. Just before sunrise, a heavy fog blankets the area. As the sunrise approaches, the... more ›
