Talking Terroni

Talking Terroni

It seems every where you look in local food blogging or restaurant reviewing, the buzz word of the moment is Terroni, a Canadian import that just opened up an outpost in West Hollywood serving up affordable Southern Italian fare. Natalie Houghton of the Daily News (via LA.com) sums it up on both sides of the scale: "At its best: Prices are reasonable, sharing is not a problem here, and sampling a variety of Italian... more ›

A Weekend Getaway at Costanoa

A Weekend Getaway at Costanoa

Located one hour south of San Francisco and 45 minutes from San Jose Airport, Costanoa Coastal Lodge and Camp is a self-penned “eco adventure resort” located in Pescadero, Calif. The relaxing vacation spot uses sustainable methods to run their operation, from recycling to choosing local produce for the California coastal cuisine they serve in the restaurant. There’s free wi-fi but cell phone service was (fortunately) sparse. To get there, you have to take Highway 1 at some point. For those who’ve never done the drive, a deep look at the beautiful coastline is enough to melt any travel stress away. Since I didn't have time to drive the whole way, my boyfriend and I opted to take a flight after work Friday from Burbank to San Jose and flew back Sunday evening. Our friends from San Francisco picked us up at the airport in San Jose and we were on our way. more ›

Intoxication Without Representation

Intoxication Without Representation

Visiting Washington D.C. during the summer is like reliving all your high school field trip nightmares. Every snotty-nosed kid and their mother was there. Despite the heat, humidity, and the rampant smell of Republican carcass, I had a great time. When Maryland and Virginia donated some land for Charles L'Enfant to build Washington D.C., as a capital city for this nation, I don't think they envisioned the polarity and contrast that metropolitan east coast city... more ›

Bumbershot

Bumbershot

Last Labor Day weekend I desperately needed to escape the disagreeable, torturous heatwave. So I made a last minute decision to fly to Seattle and bumbershoot. As luck would have it, my spontaneity provided for a much more temperate and rainless 70 degree haven. The Bumbershoot Festival has been running 37 years strong and every year it seems to progress into a bigger and better animal. Situated within the spacious Seattle Center amidst the... more ›

My Labor Day Weekend in Las Vegas

My Labor Day Weekend in Las Vegas

My sister decided to be the best sibling in the world and buy tickets for me to see Justin Timberlake at the Mandalay Bay. The only bad part about it was that it was on September 1, smack dab in the middle of Labor Day weekend. If you've ever headed to Las Vegas or the river during this time, you know it can be a total pain in the ass. I believe the 15... more ›

Labor Day Camping on Catalina Island

Labor Day Camping on Catalina Island

So I have this pretty fun tradition (aside from Three Rivers in the holidays), of going camping at Two Harbors on Catalina Island every Labor Day Weekend. The tradition originally began as a Jugglers' Festival, oddly enough, of which I was only a part due to my friend and her husband who are amateur jugglers, and because they are friends with some fairly accomplished ones. There was a juggling volleyball game on one of... more ›

Burning Man Weather Report: Got Dust?

Burning Man Weather Report: Got Dust?

According to various reports, the condition for this year's Burning Man is going to be exceptionally dusty this year. Due to lack of rain fall and snow fall from the mountains, the lake that forms the Playa did not occur this year. As a result there has been white out conditions almost every day for several hours. The playa is comprised of million year old fish poop that have become fine dust over the... more ›

What I did on Vacation - San Francisco

What I did on Vacation - San Francisco

I don't care if the Golden Gate Bridge gets all of the attention. It's actually an orange vermillion anyways, as folk-rocker David Dondero reminds us. I have much love for the Oakland Bay Bridge, with its geometric patterns, sweeping lines and panoramic view of the city. By the way, they will be closing the bridge down for the long weekend, so beware. Cyberspace has given me the virtual ability to drag the entire world down... more ›

The Getaway: Three Rivers, CA

The Getaway: Three Rivers, CA

Next time, don't go to Yosemite and bitch about the crowds. Consider a secret little place my family's been vacationing in for years now: Three Rivers. A tiny town in the foothills of the Sequoias, Three Rivers is a pretty idyllic little spot, and home to many families, artists, and musicians. In short, it has a lot of character. Highway 198 runs right through the middle of it, up to Kings Canyon, a 462,901 acre national park; Lake Kaweah yields three forks of the Kaweah River that give the town its name and splits it up into sections known as "North Fork" and "South Fork". more ›

Oh, Canada

Oh, Canada

I went to Canada for my summer vacation. While Zach was running the ship, and while all the guest editors were guest editing, I was north of the border drinking beer, buying weed from Hells Angels, and constantly eating poutine and sushi. They have fireworks in the bay several times during the summer, they have a garbage strike that doesn't seem to effect anyone. And they have an odd relationship with buying booze in... more ›

The magic of the number 11 (or, why Giants fans are pathetic)

The magic of the number 11 (or, why Giants fans are pathetic)

The Dodgers won their 11th straight game at Pac Bell/SBC/AT&T Park yesterday. The Giants were held to 11 runs during this weekend's series (compare this to the Dodgers' 22 runs - or should we say 11*2?). Brett Tomko's ERA is no longer as close to 11 as it was prior to the game (and it was getting there...). I spent 11 hours in the car this weekend driving back and forth from SF and now hold hour long conversations with myself. Oh and Malingering has 11 letters. So does "coincidence." more ›

Arizona gives the Dodgers a nice goodbye present

Arizona gives the Dodgers a nice goodbye present

Yesterday's Dodger game was worth the long drive and the unbelievable heat and even the helmet sundae fiasco. All of the elements of a great game were there: Randy Johnson was starting (against Randy Wolf for a Randy vs. Randy battle which made me giggle), Martin hit a 2 run home run in the 1st inning which made the rest of the game seem easy, every Dodger in the starting lineup made it on... more ›

Toto, I don't think we're in Arizona anymore

Toto, I don't think we're in Arizona anymore

I asked for a "souvenir helmet sundae." This is because I wanted 1) a souvenir helmet and 2) a sundae. Well, I got number 2 as this is clearly a sundae. And I got half of number 1 as this is a helmet. But how in the world is it a souvenir if it is not the helmet of the team whose STADIUM YOU ARE SITTING IN WATCHING A BALLGAME? I already have about 500 little plastic Dodger hats. Why in the name of Vin Scully would you give me another one when I am at Chase Field, home of the DIAMONDBACKS? I want an ARIZONA souvenir helmet. I didn't drive 400 miles and endure 114 degree heat to pretend I'm at Dodger Stadium. more ›

112 degrees outside, you'd better get a run

112 degrees outside, you'd better get a run

Because LAist loves you and loves the Dodgers, we thought it would be nice to give you some road trip action. Hooray for you. Okay, really I just had to escape LA for a while for fear of vengance from the Victoria's Secret Pink Army and thought Phoenix would be safe. I can blend in with all of the other out-of-town Dodger fans and no one will suspect a thing. Before I go into... more ›

Wine Country Road Trip

Wine Country Road Trip

If you've lived in L.A. for more than two years and haven't experienced wine country, it's time to take the trip. We finally did, making the three-hour trek to Paso Robles, and now can't believe we'd put it off this long. more ›

LA to the Bay via Freeway 99 w/ Cheese

LA to the Bay via Freeway 99 w/ Cheese

State Route 99 cuts straight through the Central Valley to Sacramento via Bakersfield and Fresno (see map below). And if you get too lost in your audiobook after the 5 skirts Angeles National Forest and meanders into the middle of nowhere, you might accidentally end up on it as we did yesterday. We didn't realize our mistake until we took note of the multicolored flowering bushes lining the median of the freeway, obscuring a great... more ›

As Soon As We Leave It Starts to Snow - LAist Goes to Mammoth

As Soon As We Leave It Starts to Snow - LAist Goes to Mammoth

We just got back from a five day trip to Mammoth. It was hot, it was hot, it was...hot. 65 degrees each day on the mountain. So hot that people were stripping down and sweating it out. Mammoth hasn't had good snow in almost three weeks so conditions were a little slushy, a little fussy, a little less than perfect. However - what could be more superb than midweek riding when everyone else expects the snow to be awful so they all stay home? Couldn't be better. more ›

Last Day For Killer Deal To Mammoth

Last Day For Killer Deal To Mammoth

Road trip! LAist, at least this one, can't be more stoked for winter to come. Getting out of Dodge, fresh powder, hitting the mountain up early, apres-ski, cute snowboarders -- Los Angeles, you might not know this, but the buzz around the rest of the country now that fall is in full effect is winter. And winter means skiing, snowboarding, hot toddies and all things white for those of you who dig this sort of thing. more ›

Bears vs. Cardinals Pre-Game 10/16/07

LAist is on the road in search of the perfect football game. If you saw last night's Monday Night Football spectacular you might agree that we were in the right place at the right time to meet our goal. We were also in the parking lot of the University of Phoenix Stadium to remind our fellow Angelenos what the NFL is all about. It's about showing up early, tailgating, painting your face, talking trash,... more ›

LAist Road Trip hits the Grand Canyon

LAist is driving around the country to find the fountain of youth. Currently we're in Arizona to see the Monday Night Football game between the Cardinals and the Chicago Bears. We're here because LA doesn't have a pro football team for some reason. Yesterday we went to that huge crack in the country called The Grand Canyon. We'd been here before and to tell you the truth, we were less than impressed. Huge crack.... more ›

LAist visits Austin, Texas

LAist is driving around the country to promote literacy. Today we found ourself in Austin, a smattering of liberalism in a huge land of conservatism. Later we were driving north trying to get out of Dallas and we discovered that we were on President George Bush Freeway. It was amazingly creepy. But Austin's motto is "Keep Austin Weird" so we did the weirdest thing we could which was find the most normal girl in... more ›

New Orleans Beer Guy on Bourbon Street

LAist is on a road trip to protest nuclear proliferation, and to celebrate beer drinking, which is why we're in New Orleans. On Bourbon Street. Drinking. Unlike Los Angeles, it's legal to drink beer on the streets here as long as it's not in a glass container. You can also smoke in the bars. This is probably the America the founders had hoped for in regards to freedom. Even though LAist doesn't smoke, we... more ›

Bamn in New York City - No Weird Meats?

LAist is on a cross country road trip to see what LA is missing. Yesterday we arrived in New York City. We never want to hear anyone ever say that LA drivers can't drive. We've never seen such madness until we drove the streets of Manhattan. Maybe it was actually super-great driving because no one got in accidents and no one pulled out a gun, but we seriously wanted to beat some people's asses... more ›

There's always room for Hate in Boston

LAist is on the road finding out the meaning of life. In Boston it's to hate the Yankees and fawn over beautiful women, as shown above with this street vendor. After the jump see what happens when we ask the local Jesus Guy who stands outside the park talking about Hell if there's baseball in Heaven... more ›

Toronto Road Trip Photo Essay

Toronto Road Trip Photo Essay

LAist is on a cross country road trip. Here are some photos from a few days in Toronto. Some more things that Toronto is like LA and not like LA: we're both huge cities without an NFL football team, Toronto wants to be more like NY while LA just attracts New Yorkers to move here, neither of us has very good pizza, the spawl is amazing in Toronto but somehow they seem to deal... more ›

Karaoke in Toronto

LAist is on a cross country road trip. Because our neighbors to the north didn't want to feel left out, we drove across the border and partied with Torontoist and later went ooot for karaoke. Some differences between LA and Toronto: the traffic in LA is lighter, it's cheaper to eat out in LA, they can name more LA Kings than we can.... more ›

LAist Road Trip: Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL

LAist is on the road. Yesterday we sat in the bleachers of Wrigley Field where it was 85 degrees and beautiful. For a 1:20pm game on a Monday with the home team 30 games below .500 it was a pretty great turnout. While getting beers we got to meet some of the ladies and gentlemen of Wrigley. Below the jump you'll get to see some of the guys who sit behind the wall in... more ›
