For the past 10 years, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition has organized a River Ride fundraiser, pedaling out thousands of cyclists.
Bicycle Sharrows Expected to be on L.A. Streets by Summer
Plans to pilot bicycle sharrows on Los Angeles streets are beginning to solidify, a city bicycle official said today. A working group between the city's Department of Transportation and L.A. County Bicycle Coalition hope to announcee five to ten sharrow locations by the end of the month (a list of possible locations were announced in January).
Controversy to Increase Speed Limits in the Valley Continues
The proposal to increase speed limits on two Valley streets was stalled by the City Council's Transportation committee this afternoon after concerns were brought up by the public and politicians alike. "I've got serious concerns with moving this forward," stated Councilman Paul Koretz, whose district includes the two streets in question, Riverside Drive and Chandler Boulevard, which could be raised to 40 and 45 miles per hour, respectively.
Bicycle and Pedestrian Count Will Help Future City Planning
Next week, the first ever Los Angeles Bicycle and Pedestrian Count will take place all over the city in the hopes of gaining a better sense of the number of bike-riders and pedestrians who use the streets. A Bicycle Census of Sorts Coming to L.A. in September
The LA County Bicycle Coalition announced today in an e-mail blast that they will be "conducting the first ever bicycle count for Los Angeles" in September. "Bicycle counts are used to track the number of cyclists at key intersections. This is used to understand year-to-year changes in cycling as policy and infrastructure changes. Bicycle counts are basic city planning tools that help change policy to encourage cycling. Most major US and European cities have them. This will be LA's first, and we plan to do it right while having a good time. As we are counting bicycles, we will also be counting pedestrians." If you have any suggestions for which intersections they should monitor, let them know via this survey.
A Bicycle Boulevard for 4th Street?
For a few years now, there has been a movement to turn the 3.6-mile 4th Street from Koreatown to near MacArthur Park into a Bicycle Boulevard. Next week, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition will hold a meeting about the idea.
