You might not be going to the LA Phil's opening night concert and gala, but there's a way you can be there somewhat vicariously. KUSC 91.5 FM will carry the "celebración" live tonight at 7 p.m. Conductor Gustavo Dudaml and his friend Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez have put together a "special program of bel canto arias and popular Latin American canciones." more ›

So how did classically-based KUSC 91.5 FM become the nation's most listened to public radio station, beating out KCRW (they came in at #4) and other major outlets? It helped when classical powerhouse K-Mozart switched to country music, but some believe a recent change in methodology used by Arbitron, which publishes rankings, is not accurate, reports the Downtown News. Basically, Arbitron switched from journal entries to people meters, which has some calling shenanigans. KUSC is not so sure. “We have a broad coverage area and we have a strong signal, but none of that matters too much unless you have really good programming to put on the signal,” said the station's President. more ›

It might be KCRW that gets all the buzz, but it's KUSC that gets the top ratings. The most recent Arbitron ratings show that the classical station earns the top public radio station in the country spot because of the "average number of listeners and individuals who tune in during the week," finds LA Observed. Here's a fact that surprised us: "The latest Arbitron ratings rank [KUSC] as the most listened-to public radio station in Southern California, ahead of public radio powerhouses KPCC and KCRW." So says USC themselves. more ›

One wouldn't really expect to go to the LACMA to go see great classical music, but during the season every Sunday at 6 there is a free concert of some great mid-career musicians or student virtuosos, broadcasted on 88.5 KCSN. KCSN 88.5 FM, the radio station run out of California State University, Northridge (CSUN), is actually not classical station 24/7 like K-Mozart was or KUSC is. The Valley based station runs classical from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. surrounded by BBC Radio in the early mornings and an eclectic mix of music including folk, roots, musicals, blues and Hawaiian at night and on the weekends.
