Henry Rollins once reminded us about John Fogerty, “The man was born in Berkeley, California - there’s not a bayou within two thousand miles!” But despite a lack of physical proximity, Fogerty absorbed a feel for the American heartland through records, and the songs he wrote at the end of the sixties have only added to its mythology. Creedence Clearwater Revival was one of the most stubbornly tradition-minded of Bay Area bands during the psychedelic era, gleefully hooting about listening to Buck Owens when stating such a preference was an unnerving freak-flag to the other freaks. With songs like “Out My Back Door” and “Lodi”, they pretty much invented country-rock as it would come to be known a few years later. But CCR was also in on the revolution, and no one who’s heard “Fortunate Son” or “Run Through The Jungle” could mistake them for reactionaries. The body of work they produced in just six years together is among the most revered and influential in American music, a touchstone that Toby Keith and the Minutemen can both raise a glass to.

While watching the Oscars at home in my bedroom, I got an email informing me that I was invited to Prince's Post-Oscar party. Me? The guy who was sitting in his room watching the Oscars in a sweaty t-shirt and shorts thanks to some much needed time at the gym was now going to be partying with Prince at his ultra-exclusive post-Oscar party.

It's nearly zero hour for the industry love fest -- better known as the Academy Awards -- and many Oscar get-togethers, soirees and partaaays are just revving up. To help dull the pain of spending three hours plus in front of the boob tube, LAist highly recommends the use of alchohol (responsibly, of course). So without further ado, here are some rules to add to your homemade Oscar telecast drinking game:

After a long day, there is just something about going to see a jam band that this little Laister loves. Trade in those hipster duds, layered clothes, clunky jewelry, tucked-in boots for a little cordoroy and Birks. Drink a micro-beer. Check out all the boys in their Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s long-sleeved T-shirts. Close your eyes and just sway to the music man. At least that was the scene Thursday night at the Phix show at The Knitting Factory. As in get your PHIX of PHISH. Yes a cover band, one of the best and very much worth your time. Who knew there were so many hippies with one-hitters in Hollywood? Brought out the Vermonter right from my little heart.

LAist doesn't usually bother with entertainment news, but an interesting tidbit just popped up, courtesy of Out of Focus. It seems that Hollywood's Kodak Theater is going to host the new musical The Ten Commandments this fall. While that is great and all, LAist thought it is worth mentioning because Val Kilmer will be playing the lead—as Moses.
