Tonight Seattle-based indie rock outfit Modest Mouse will be performing at the Hollywood Palladium with the OC's own Japanese Motors. Mexican electro rockers Kinky are poised to headline the Henry Fonda Music Box. And, lastly, San Franciscan singer-songwriter Miranda Lee Richards will be concluding her month-long residency at Spaceland. But we strongly suggest heading over to the Troubadour to catch NY-based indie rockers French Kicks.
Tonight In Rock: Modest Mouse, Kinky, French Kicks, Miranda Lee Richards
Tonight In Rock: Q-Tip, OneRepublic, Kinky, Marnie Stern
Tonight pop rock sensation OneRepublic will be headlining a bill of relatively mediocre acts at the Palladium in Hollywood. If you're looking for the bizarre, then the El Rey is playing host to beats (experimental electro group Gang Gang Dance) and frenetic guitar playing (Marnie Stern). Speaking of slaying guitars, stoner metal is apparently still very much alive and kicking. Head over to Spaceland for some serious headbanging with Miami-based Torche. And Mexico's own Kinky will be stopping through Club Nokia. But we suggest heading over to McCabe's to see Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson.
Pencil This In: Monday (New Year's Eve Edition)
Love it or hate it, tonight's New Year's Eve. And while half of the city has vacated for NYE's in Vegas, there's plenty to do right here in LA to welcome '08.
She's Crafty
Still haven’t found the perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for kinky family member? Not sure what to get for the Samantha Jones of your group? Or just broke, and would sooner choke on a reindeer cookie than knit another scarf? There’s hope yet—and thank the gods of crafting, it doesn’t involve mastering a new sweater pattern. This Friday, Babeland, L.A.’s loveable educational sex toy store, will offer up Craftnight. Hosted by Julianna Parr—or “JP the...

Detour Festival Downtown Los Angeles, 9/6/07
The Detour Festival was ok. I didn't stay for very long because my girlfriend and I felt like cattle, and were tired of doing the unavoidable million laps around City Hall. Basically we echo all the sentiments previously put forth by our faithful editor, Tony Pierce. After the jump enjoy over 60 pics of such bands and big shots as: Kinky, Janeane Garofalo, Autolux, The Ravonettes, and Perry Ferrell's Satellite Party. All Photos by...

Bloc Party, Justice, Satellite Party, Celebrity Skin Confirmed for Detour Fest 2 - Good as the First?
LA Weekly's inaugural Detour music festival rocked downtown last October, with frenzied dancing, drinking, and dope smoking on the downtown streets, City Hall lawn, and even St. Vibiana's Cathedral with the likes of Beck, Blonde Redhead, !!!, Queens of the Stone Age, Basement Jaxx, and Nortec Collective. The second Detour is a day-long music extravaganza that's set up to be quite the, um, party, with headliners: Bloc Party, Satellite Party, Justice, Celebrity Skin, and...
DVD Tuesday: TV Bully Kicks Dwarf in Face
While rightly lauded for originating The Office, I think Extras is Ricky Gervais' true masterpiece. I mean, how can you possibly top Harry Potter flicking a rubber into Dame Diana Rigg's hair? I'll tell you how--have David Bowie improvise this song for Gervais' hapless Andy Millman. Unfortunately (really unfortunately), Gervais decided against another season of the show, but Season 2 is now available on DVD. Buy it. Watch it. Live it.
DVD Tuesday: At long last...Norbit!
When I saw in
the theater, there were about 60 people in the audience. Virtually all of them maintained the
appropriate funereal silence as the film was slowly excreted
through the projector.One guy, though,
was apparently watching the funniest movie he had ever seen. I imagine he’s one of the few that will
be lining up to buy
today. For the rest of us, it’s
probably a couple of good docs, some excellent TV, a Jason Alexander boob-heavy curio and
a long overdue (for me, at least) Wack Pack biography.
One dark note this week…the emergence of a new, sinister and completely
unnecessary form of DVD.Actually,
I should say a new form of packaging a DVD since there is not really any fresh
material on these so-called “steelbook”
and “lenticular”
editions.They just look really
shiny.Because I am sick and tired
of studios repackaging crap in new boxes, these releases are consigned to
“after the jump”.

Before tomorrow night's MLS match pitting the LA Galaxy against DC United, Mexican rock band Kinky will play a special pre-game set for soccer and music fans. Their song "Solo un Paso" from is the theme for Fox Sports en Español's 2007 MLS broadcasts, with the video featured n the channel's pre-game montage. American Idol: Sanjaya Brings Viewers to Tears
In the six seasons of American Idol, LAist can't recall a more average group of singers -- in voice and personality. Tuesday nights so far have been two hours of tedium, except for one or two standout performances a night. Last night -- British Invasion Night -- was no different. The song choices were unappealing to those under 40, and it's a safe bet that many of the contestants never even heard of their...
Tonight in Rock in LA - ZZ Top, Smith's Night, Kinky Karaoke
People don't realize until they show up and then leave empty-handed, but most who show up at the Grammys tonight will lose. So for all you losers, and all your loser friends who might not want to go to those glitzy glamorous chi-chi award parties, here are some alternatives where you'll find some locals rocking out and dancing to actual music ZZ Top @ House of Blues Smith's Night @ The Echo Kinky Karaoke...
TV Junkie: Paula Abdul Tries to Appear Normal on Leno; "24" Part Deux; the Golden Globes on NBC
A Word or 44: The first 1/2 of the "24" season premiere was quite good even though I don't understand how Jack found the terrorist dude before his house got blown up. Also, was there some anal play going on between Jack and the first terrorist guy? Kinky. Tonight - Monday - January 15th, 2007 "Lawrence of Arabia" (TCM, 5:00 p.m.) Quite possibly the best movie ever made. "Hamlet" (IFC, 6:00 p.m.) Classic Shakespeare...

Who Should I See on Sept. 5 - The Grates or Kinky
Dear LAist, I know you're all over The Grates, but are you familiar with Kinky? I have been asked by two different boys today to see each of these shows. I don't know what to do. AHHHHHHH. - P. Hilton Dear Perez, Yes it's true we're down with the Grates, but the good news is that even though the Grates play at Cinespace on that Tuesday, 9/5 (by the way, you're quite an organized...
Culture + Trip Planner: Tonight is Sounds Eclectico
This week ExperienceLA.com slyly launched their new site design and features to the public, beta style. Now you can RSS Feed "What's Hot" events, upcoming events, closing events, or even better: design your own feed (how genius is that?). Go to it, use it, experience Los Angeles.
Films This Week(end): Festivals, Smoking, Vendettas
While The Other Venice Film Festival finishes up this weekend, three local film fests hit Los Angeles. Tonight through Sunday, Perspectives International Film Festival, at Laemmle's Music Hall 3, features films that challenge stereotypes of the lives of people with developmental disabilities. The Silver Lake Film Festival, in its 6th year, begins next Thursday. Joining them at the ArcLight, will be the Fringe Fest '06 & mp-4 Fest.
