Francois K & John Tejada, A Pair of Techno Titans This Friday

Top techno night Compression features a double-bill of headliners this Friday at King King in Hollywood. DJing alongside New York’s Francois K will be Los Angeles legend John Tejada. They're two DJ/producers who have walked very different paths to global dance music stardom.

It's a quality night in Echo Park with Super Furry Animals and Holy Fuck are at the Echoplex and if you can swing it, right there at The Echo you'll find The Kooks and The Morning Benders. In Hollywood, Grammy award winning Dirty Vegas front man Steve Smith is slated to play acoustic tonight at the Hotel Cafe (but is not on the calendar anymore, so who knows).

Author and USC professor Gina Nahai and actress Bahar Soomekh (Crash) read from Nahai’s latest book Caspian Rain – about a family falling apart just before the Islamic revolution in Iran. Immediately following, there’s a discussion of the changing lives of women of the Middle East, and relationships between Iran’s Jewish and Muslim communities, as well as how these communities interact in Los Angeles, “home to the largest population of Iranians outside Tehran.”

Remember in high school when you had a crush on that guy a few grades older than you and you couldn't stop thinking about him or telling your friends about how you were totally going to go to prom together, and fall in love, and go to the same college, and live happily ever after- if only he knew who you were? What about in ninth grade when you dressed up as a “space chick” for Halloween- but everyone thought you were a hooker? Maybe it was the time in junior high that you were chosen to MC a pep rally- in front of the whole school (OMG so exciting!) only to find out afterwards that you had really bad pit stains the whole time- and EVERYONE saw! Because all of us had absolutely horrendous experiences as adolescents (some of which we may still be living down) Dave Nadelberg, author of Mortified: Real Words, Real People, Real Pathetic and the upcoming Mortified 2: Love is a Battlefield, has created a forum for men and women all across the country to “share in the shame” as they recount horrifying moments from adolescence before a live audience in Mortified: Live.

So the Japanese have mastered a lot of things that maybe our feeble minds can't handle here in the good ol' USA. One of which is shirt-folding. I have tried this video at home in the morning and at night, sober and wasted (I thought it would be a cool party trick) but alas, it's not my bag. Of course this never stopped me from buying more shirts or supporting new labels launching here...

Monday night, rumor had it there would be a top-secret Blasters reunion at the King King. They needed footage for something they are filming about drummer Bill Bateman. The Blasters fronted by Phil Alvin still play gigs, but this is the first time the original band has played together since I don't know when. I got there just in time to see them do Marie Marie and two other songs before the Alvins drifted off and everyone else prepared for a late-night jam session.

The 2007 Silverlake Film Festival heads into its second and final week. Highlights include…

Starting this Thursday May 3rd, our little bohemian neighborhood that could, Silver Lake, will be holding its nine day long, 7th annual Silver Lake Film Festival, complete with indie movies, indie music, and even indie darling Parker Posey accepting the “Spirit of Silver Lake” award. Right in the shadow of the bright lights, doctored scripts and smarmy agents of Hollywood, SLFF, dares the big studios to F with them. 2007’s SLFF kicks off tomorrow...

About ten days ago at Spaceland Shapes of Race Cars (not Races Cars, LA Weekly), played with the Binges in a show that even Mummy from The Monster Squad attended and rocked out to. Tonight you'll have to choose which one you want to see, unless of course you're interested in laughing, in which case you might consider Patton Oswalt... or Metal Skool who are known to attract celebs to their shows. After the jump check out the hair band covering Led Zep with the singer from Disturbed and your favorite power forward, Dennis Rodman.

Cati Jean's stunning creation of L'Effleur Des Sens was one of LAist's highlights last year. French Cabaret, King King, Limited Engagement - it doesn't get much better than that. Therefore, it comes as quite a pleasant surprise that by popular demand the show is returning this year and kicking things off tonight.

The Fratelli's doing "The Seeker" with Pete Townshend at SXSW Now that SXSW has wrapped, indie bands and up n comers are scattering around the country like cockroaches startled by the kitchen light. Tonight we have three groups that LAist was lucky enough to see out in Austin. We caught Bloc Party putting on an energetic and uplifting set in the back of Stubbs, we saw The Fratelli's do a light-hearted acoustic set on...

Downtempo electronica artist Rara Avis will have a chance to showcase tracks from his newly released E.P., Shaktified, at a series of shows in Hollywood and Santa Monica this weekend. The multi-instrumentalist’s work features a focus on tribal house/trance rhythms but his blues and Jimi Hendrix-influenced guitar riffs set him apart from others in this genre. Frequently a collaborator with other electronica DJs and producers, such as the Desert Dwellers, Zen Dancing, and the...

Teenage angst has become a cottage industry, thanks to David Nadelberg. The LA-based writer, editor and "angstologist" created the stage show Mortified in 2002, where people read/perform entries from the pages of their old diaries, letters, songs, poems and notes in front of an audience. Growing in popularity like a jock in high school, the show has reached other cities besides LA -- Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and New York -- as well as the NPR airwaves.
