Sheriff's Deputies Shoot, Kill 3 in Separate Incidents

This weekend's fatal deputy involved shootings brings the total number of such incidents to 13 for 2009. There were five in 2008. Before this weekend, Sheriff Lee Baca called for expedited department investigations into deputy shootings of unarmed suspects after such an incident took place last week in Athens. However, at all three shootings this weekend, guns from the suspects were recovered, according to authorities.

Firefighter Who Lost Life in Station Fire was Expecting a Child

LA County Fire released the biographies of the two fallen firefighters today. Fire Captain Tedmund D. “Ted” Hall, 47 and Fire Fighter Specialist Arnaldo “Arnie” Quinones, 34, died yesterday afternoon when their vehicle went over the side of a road, plunging 800 feet into a canyon near Camp 16, a Department of Corrections facility, in Palmdale. Especially saddening is that Quinones was expecting his first child in the next several weeks. Biographies are below:

LA County Fire Releases Names of 2 Killed in Line of Duty

Officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department released the names of the two firefighters who lost their lives in the Station Fire earlier today. Captain Tedmund “Ted” Hall, 47, and 35-year-old Firefighter Specialist Arnaldo ”Arnie” Quinones went over the edge of a mountainside road south of Acton as they were overrun by the fire while driving a vehicle. Hall, a 26-year veteran of the department, lived in San Bernardino and Quinones, of Palmdale, served for eight years. "This accident is tragic," said Captain Mike Bryant with difficulty at a press conference earlier today. "This is a very diffcult time for Los Angeles County Fire Department and the men and women that serve day in, day out." Funeral arrangements are pending and information relating to services will be made available in the near future.

Underage DUI Suspect Kills Cyclist, Injures 2

20-year-old Marco Antonio Valencia will be arraigned today in court for a weekend incident that killed a Santa Clarita Valley man and injured two others on Bouquet Canyon Road. It's a pretty gruesome story, as the local paper, The Signal, tells it:

Bicyclist Killed by City Truck in the West Valley

A Los Angeles Department of Water & Power truck struck and killed a cyclist this afternoon in the Lake Balboa area. A woman in her 30s was riding her bicycle when the truck, attempting to make a right turn, ran into her shortly after 12 p.m., said Devin Gales, a spokesman with the LA Fire Department. Paramedics responded finding her trapped under the truck, located at 7447 N. Louise Avenue. The driver was a private contractor doing work on behalf of LADWP, a department spokesperson said. Further details are pending an investigation. UPDATE: The LAPD estimates her age to be between 50 and 60 years old.

Man Hit and Killed by Metro Blue Line Train

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a northbound Blue Line train at about 2:30 p.m. in South Los Angeles. The man, estimated to be approximately 50 years old, was crossing at a marked crosswalk, but it is unknown if he was doing so legally, according to the LA Fire Department, who gathered the information from witnesses. The 47-year-old train operator was shaken and asked paramedics to evaluate her condition, but she declined treatment and transportation. A Sheriff's investigation is underway. This is the second Metro related death within a day's time. Last night, a woman was killed near City Hall when a bus hit her.

Angels Pitcher Nick Adenhart Dies in Orange County Accident

Just hours after playing a game last night, Nick Adenhart and two others died when a mini van ran a red light in Fullerton shortly after midnight. Another person from the vehicle remains in the hospital. The driver of the mini van fled the scene, but was caught and arrested a mile away by police. A passenger in that vehicle was also taken to the hospital.

Man Killed on Freeway This Morning Was Tagging

Motorists attempting to travel on the 5 Freeway through Downtown this morning were stopped short for over an hour following the death of 25-year-old Jaime Herrera, who was struck and killed by a silver Toyota Camry at approximately 4:30 a.m. Herrera was "running east across the northbound lanes near the Los Angeles River," when he was hit, according to L.A. Now. So what was he doing on foot on the freeway? The LA County coroner's office says he was doing something he sure as hell shouldn't have been: “He had just finished tagging a freeway sign when he attempted to run across the freeway,” explained Lt. Cheryl MacWillie. “There was another friend with him tagging, but he survived.”

A 39-year-old woman was struck and killed by a Metrolink train moving through Burbank last night. According the Daily News, the Burbank police say she "was struck about 6:25 p.m. at San Fernando Boulevard and Buena Vista Street." No further information has been made available. The Burbank police are investigating the incident, and they are asking that anyone with information call them at (818) 238-3000.

     

The man who was shot and killed yesterday in a Scientology building parking lot has not been officially identified, but police say he is from Florence, Oregon and was involved with the church "a long time ago."

Even going 10 MPH can be deadly. A supposedly distracted mother who just dropped off her own child to Toll Middle School in Glendale hit an 11-year-old girl as she drove through a marked crosswalk yesterday morning. Vehicles going in the other direction had yielded for the children, according to TV news reports. The driver stayed at the scene and was cooperative with police. She was let go, but her Nissan Pathfinder was taken by investigators.

A hostage situation led to the death of a suspect in Lynwood, a suburb just south of Los Angeles, last night. Around 9:00 p.m., sheriff's deputies responded to a call and found the wife of the suspect shot and wounded outside of her house. Inside, her husband had taken their 2-year-old daughter hostage. At 11:30 p.m., SWAT entered the household, shot and killed the man and rescued the daughter who was unharmed, according to the Associated Press.

One person was killed and at least three others were wounded in a shooting at a Samoan Flag Day celebration at Victoria Park in Carson around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Ricardo Pedroza. The other three victims were a woman, a man, and a boy between 10 and 13 years old, according to reports. Police are still looking for the suspect.

The Long Beach Police Department and the LA County District Attorney's Office are investigating an officer-involved shooting that killed a 46-year-old Samoan man around 7 p.m. Saturday night in a residential neighborhood of Long Beach.

One person was killed last night following a fight at a house party held last night in East L.A. on the 1400 block of Downey Street.
