Big Daddy Adam Sandler Gets 2,431st Star on Walk of Fame
He's "Billy Madison," with some "Anger Management," issues: Actor Adam Sandler, who rose to fame as a "Saturday Night Live" cast member and in top-grossing comedy hit films was honored today with the 2,431st star embedded in Hollywood's iconic Walk of Fame.
Movie Review: The Dilemma
This weekend America faces The Dilemma, a new purported comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Kevin James. The boys play best friends, James the happily married to Winona Ryder man and Vaughn the bachelor who is practically married to Jennifer Connelly, but scared to take the next step guy. The smug, married couple spend the first half of the movie encouraging Vaughn to pop the question and the second half berating him for not knowing how hard it is to be married. They could both stand to look at their own marriage and leave Vaughn alone.
Box Office Review: Toys Dominate Grown Ups!
Pixar's Toy Story 3 enjoyed a very strong second weekend and easily claimed the weekend box office crown with a hefty haul of $59M ($226.5M). The terrible Grown Ups was a distant second with $41M, but that was still twice as much cash as the disappointing Knight and Day ($20.5). The Kung Fu Kid continues to do well ($15.4M | $135.6M) while The A-Team will struggle to hit the magical $100M barrier ($6M | $62.8M).
Weekend Movie Guide: Grown-Ups?
So let me get this straight: take Adam Sandler (not funny), Kevin James (not funny), David Spade (once funny), Chris Rock (once funny) and Rob Schneider (once sort of funny) and you get a summer comedy blockbuster? I would almost see Sex and the City 2: Venality Reigns before seeing Grown Ups. What I will see, though, is Knight and Day. Cruise and Diaz were solid together in Vanilla Sky, and they look finely matched in this over-the-top actioner. Still think that we need troops in Iraq and Afghanistan? Watch Restrepo and ponder the reality that Americans are dying for virtually nothing every day overseas.
DVD Tuesday: Cruise Attacks Hitler!
Here's the damn shame of it all: Bryan Singer is a super filmmaker and the "Valkyrie" story is a fascinating piece of German history. That said, Tom Cruise should never have been the cornerstone of this film. A potentially great movie was rendered into something that was merely okay. Then again, "merely okay" would have been a triumph for the awful Paul Blart: Fat Guy Acting Stupid. I originally saw Made in America at Sundance in 2008. It is a must-see documentary that details the rise of gangs in South Central Los Angeles. Stacy Peralta may not have the chops of an Errol Morris, but he is a consistently engaging documentarian.
Paul Blart 'National Mall Cop' Guards Inauguration
On this historical day Barack Obama will toss his suddenly-dated business card, reading "President Elect," in favor of a new batch. President Of The United States of America. Congratulations Mr. President.
Box Office Review: Who Blarted?
Dismal "comedy" Paul Blart: Mall Cop tricked thousands of Americans into buying tickets as it easily topped the weekend box office chart ($33.8M). Last week's champ Gran Torino had another strong week ($22.2M/$73.2M) as it held off three new releases: the bloody My Bloody Valentine 3-D ($21.9M), the bloody Notorious ($21.5M) and the bloody Hotel for Dogs ($17.7M). The second half of the top 10 was led by the awful Bride Wars ($11.7M/$37.5M) which bested the amazing Odette Yustman's The Unborn ($9.8M/$33M).
Weekend Movie Guide: No Biggie
My Bloody Valentine 3D marks a welcome return of the standard horror elements of gore and nudity. Say it with me, America: no more PG-13 horror films! Since I am firmly in the 2Pac camp, I will not be spending money to see Notorious. Is it possible for Kevin James to star in something less funny than King of Queens? His new film Paul Blart: Mall Cop would seem to argue, "Yes!" Hotel for Dogs is strictly for kids and fans of dog culture (and pervs who are into Emma Roberts). Chandni Chowk to China is proof that not all foreign films are good.
"Chuck & Larry" is a Great Movie
Adam Sandler and Kevin James, although not gay, have great on-screen chemistry in I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. Throw in one of the best comedic performances of Sandler's career and you've got a movie that everyone is going to be talking about this weekend. Perhaps it's his recent foray into serious roles that has made Sandler a more seasoned actor, bringing fresh ideas and nuances into his comedic performances -- whatever it is, his character in this movie is sure to please everyone.
Sacha Baron Cohen & Will Ferrell Suck Face; Rihanna Grinds
5:46 - Total number of celebs who have visited the Blogghetto: 0. 5:44 - It's time for the next movie spoof, something about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. 5:41 - Sacha Baron Cohen (looking handsome as ever) berates Will Ferrelll for not calling him after their tender on-set moment in Talladega Nights. He pulls Will Ferrell in for a long, shameless lip-lock that leaves them both rolling on the floor like fictional teenagers in a...
