Tomorrow marks the first day of summer, though our overcast skies tell another much gloomier story. Today happens to mark the day when several public City-operated swimming pools open up for the season. It also marks the launch of Operation Splash, a free "learn-to-swim project for area youth," run in partnership by the City of Los Angeles and Kaiser Permanente, according to abc7.

She wanted $2 million in endorsements and appearance fees, but now Nadya Suleman, aka OctoMom, just wants her 8 newborn babies. The 33-year-old Whittier woman apparently told TV therapist Dr. Phil McGraw that she feared Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Bellflower might not release the babies to her, according to the Associated Press (via Huffington Post).

More details are coming out about Ervin Lupoe, who is suspected of killing himself after shooting his five children and wife at their Wilmington neighborhood home. He was at least one month behind in mortgage payments, owed the IRS $15,000 and had thousands of dollars out on credit, reports the Associated Press.

Last year Kaiser Permanente donated $1.2 million to the city to help keep 15 city swimming pools open an extra two weeks at the end of the summer. This year Kaiser cut their donation by 90%, and still, magically the city announced that thanks to the HMO, 14 city pools will remain open two weeks longer than originally scheduled. Our best pictures are of The Sugarplastic but we left the Great American Smokeout Benefit Show last night most impressed with Space MTN. Dina Waxman's sad songs about loss and past relationships gone bad mixed with her deadpan banter in between songs were oddly appropriate for this night of jokes and music centered around that most hilarious of subjects: Cancer.
