Virgin Unite's Rock the Kasbah Gala Benefits Youth, Education

Common, Colbie Caillat, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Robin Thicke, Taryn Manning and Justin Long were among the stars who came out to support Richard and Eve Branson's 4th Annual Rock the Kasbah fundraiser for Virgin Unite at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Thursday night. more ›

Holiday Box Office Review: It's All-American!

Though Friday estimates indicated that Machete might win the weekend, it was George Clooney's subdued The American that ultimately topped the box office. Despite the purported presence of Lindsay Lohan's titties, Machete only managed to bring in $14M, far shy of The American's $16.3M ($19.5). The resilient Takers placed a strong third ($13.5M | $39.9M), well ahead of The Last Exorcism ($8.7M | $33.5M) and Drew Barrymore's latest catastrophe Going the Distance ($8.6M). more ›

Box Office Review: Up Soars!

Box Office Review: Up Soars!

In an instance of fitting justice, Pixar's Up, uh, ballooned past expectations to pull in a mammoth $68.2M and easily top the weekend box office chart. Night at the Museum 2: Needless Sequel lost more than half its audience from last week's debut, but still managed to earn $25.5M ($105.2M). The week's other newcomer Drag Me To Hell scared up $16.6M worth of business to edge a plummeting Terminator Salvation ($16.1M/$90.6M). Meantime, the reliable Star Trek continued to plug along at a good pace ($12.8M/$209.5M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Up, Up and away!

I'm not sure how much more I can write about Up that I didn't relate in my review from yesterday. Simply put -- go see it! Unless you're a misguided fool like Armond White, you'll love it. Nice to see Sam Raimi taking a dip back into the horror pool with Drag Me to Hell (although the PG-13 rating is chickenshit). I'll never understand why Alison Lohman isn't a bigger star. Watch her in Where the Truth Lies and tell me she isn't fantastic. more ›

Box Office Review: America is Into You

Box Office Review: America is Into You

An all-star cast was enough to propel newcomer He Only Wants To Sleep with You to the top of the weekend box-office. The generic romantic comedy tallied an impressive $27.4M to easily beat last week's champ Taken ($20.3/$53.3M). The superb Coraline managed to snag $16.3M worth of kiddie dollars as parents weren't scared away by the film's dark themes. After that it was the unnecessary and dreadful The Pink Panther 2 ($12M) followed by the equally boorish Paul Blart: Pathetic Fatso ($11M/$97M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: The Death of Steve Martin

Weekend Movie Guide: The Death of Steve Martin

Do you remember the days when you looked forward to the new Steve Martin movie? Is anyone anywhere looking forward to The Pink Panther 2? Speaking of bad movies, Push is proof that you shouldn't try to do effects-driven films on a tight budget. I'm just not that into He's Just Not That Into You. Fanboys was once a good movie before being raped by its distributor. Coraline looks amazingly good and amazingly creepy. more ›

Box Office Review: Cyrus family back on top!

Box Office Review: Cyrus family back on top!

Not since 1992 when Billy Ray Cyrus sparked an ill-advised cultural revolution with his tuneless "Achy Breaky Heart" has the Cyrus family experienced a moment of such undeserved triumph. Defying all logic and good taste, finished a distant second with $13M, further solidying her status as an actress with middling taste and few passionate fans. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: One gem, much coal

Weekend Movie Guide: One gem, much coal

This weekend's new movie offererings are so spectacularly awful that I felt compelled to lead with the dreamy 1961 French classic, Last Year At Mariendbad, which opens this weekend at the Nuart. You'll probably walk out of the theater wondering what in the hell you just saw (it's trippy and plotless), but at least you'll be challenged a little bit. That certainly won't be the case with Jessica Alba's latest snoozer, The Eye. This "horror" movie is, of course, a re-make of a better Japanese film. Please Jesus, make this trend and this actress go away. more ›
