The man known as the "Mid-City Molester" was convicted on Friday of kidnapping and molestation. Daniel Merino, 42, was found guilty by a Los Angeles Superior Court jury of approaching four girls between the ages of eight and ten while they were on their way to school, reports the LA Independent. The girls were all alone when approached.
Jury Says Life in Prison for New Year's Eve K-Town Killers
A jury today spared two convicted murderers of the death penalty, settling for life in prison without parole, according to the L.A. County District Attorney's Office. Matthew Ian Koontz, 36, and Jonathan Blackwell, 29, were convicted in January in the 2006 slaying of a father and his 17-year-old stepdaughter on New Year's Eve. The two had broken into Raul Cruz' apartment on December 31st, 2006, and fatally shot Cruz, 31 and Jessica Cipriano. Micaela Estrada, Cruz' common-law wife, was shot in the stomach and survived. Cruz' 9-year-old son hid under a bed and was unharmed. Formal sentencing by Superior Court Judge Bob Bowers is set for April 8th.
Phil Spector Found Guilty of Murder
A jury today found music producer Phil Spector guilty of second-degree murder. He stood accused for the death of Lana Clarkson, 40, who was found shot to death in his home in Alhambra in 2003. His first trial in 2007 ended in jury deadlock. A sentencing hearing, which could lead to at least 18 years in jail, has been set for May 29th
Jury Selection Begins for Fatal Metrolink Crash
At 6 a.m. on January 26, 2005, a man sat his Jeep Grand Cherokee across Metrolink train tracks near Chevy Chase Drive in Glendale in an attempt to, what he and his family members claim, commit suicide. Juan Manuel Alvarez, then 26, abandoned his vehicle before a southbound train hit it, derailing and colliding with a northbound train. Glendale Police say his actions were "not consistent" with those of someone attempting suicide and a Glendale Fire Department arson investigator found that gasoline had been poured on the Jeep.
