This past weekend, the Green Apple Festival (MySpace), billed as "America's Largest Earth Day Celebration," was held in eight cities across the country (with the exception of Washington D.C., which was reportedly rained out), including here in Los Angeles. Performing live music on Sunday at the Santa Monica Pier were the Frequency (MySpace), School of Rock Hollywood All-Stars, Escalera (MySpace), Juliette and the Licks (MySpace), Ziggy Marley (MySpace), and Taj Majal (MySpace). Actress Amy......

People have been asking me what's up with the Weekly lately and hell if I know. They do their thing and maybe new management has made them lose their edge, but maybe they're just getting olde. Seems to me that once upon a time if someone like Juliette Lewis was in town to play a Saturday night show at the Roxy with a decent bill like Scissors for Lefty and Suffrajett, the Weekly would......

In a show of good will that we don't even think the firefighters got, the world famous Roxy on the Sunset Strip will be opening its doors to the WGA writers throughout the strike, LAist has just learned. In support of the writer’s strike, The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood is opening its legendary doors to all members of the Writers Guild of America. Simply presenting a membership card will allow all guild members......

Check out late night TV, lots of good stuff including an appearance of Juliette and the Licks (photo via Juliette's Myspace) on the Late Late Show. Tonight we also present the guilty pleasures of Steve-O's new show Dr. Steve-O, USA @ 11:00pm. Steve-O's sidekick is the lovely Trishelle of Real World fame who was interviewed here on LAist a couple months ago. The premise is that Steve-O and Trishelle subject "wussies" to various humiliations......

Not since Pee Wee's Playhouse has there been a children's show that grown-ups can enjoy as much as kids. Washington DC's local cable-access show, Pancake Mountain, has been attracting rockers like Deerhoof, Scissor Sisters, and Arcade Fire since 2003. Scott Stuckey's concept for the program was to have a children's show that is focused on fun, not on marketing. It's all about the music, and their live dance parties invite local kids to join......

If you go as far west as you can in West Hollywood on Santa Monica Blvd., right before you wind up in Beverly Hills you will see the Troubadour - one of the most famous rock clubs in the world - established in 1957. Home of the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Elton John, and Linda Ronstadt in the '60s and '70s, the warm, rich club also saw the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, and......

Juliette Lewis and her band of handsome young bearded men stormed into Spaceland for a secret show that started at 9pm to accommodate the crowd of industry insiders and professionals. She promptly reminded them what rock and roll was all about. Coming off an almost endless European tour, mostly in arenas or at festivals, the Licks' fury and power were overwhelming and wonderful in the small Silver Lake club. Juliette is a star and......

Smoosh was at the Troubadour with Monster Bobby last night in support of the Pipettes. Sadly, LAist was across town at the Juliette Lewis and the Licks show at Spaceland so we don't have any reports as to how the show was in WeHo. And looking at Koga's flickr photos, it doesn't look like the Pipettes let him take any pictures - which is odd because the Pipettes are extremely easy on the eyes......

You have exactly one week to bid farewell to Spaceland. Because next Monday night Juliette and the Licks are gonna blow that mother's face out. According to her website Myspace blog, the LA native best known for her acting, but totally loved for her rocking, Juliette Lewis will be playing a secret show at the hip Silver Lake club at 9pm on June 11. This is quite a departure for the band who has......

Juliette Lewis & The Licks Four on the Floor The Militia Group UK release date: May 28 US release date: July 24 When we were younger we never understood what being intimidated by a hot woman meant. We were like "how can you be intimidated by boobies?" But as we have grown up and been around the block a few times, we now know what it means to be intimidated by hotness, for if......

A Word or 33: Is anyone watching "Idol"? I can't believe it's back, I just haven't accepted it. Maybe when Diana Ross comes on as a consultant, perhaps after she sues "Dreamgirls," then I might consider it. Today - Wednesday - January 17th, 2007 Lakers @ Spurs (KCAL, 6:00 p.m.) "Foreign Correspondent" (TCM, 7:00 p.m.) A '40s classic from Hitchcock. "American Idol" (Fox, 8:00 p.m.) Season premiere part deux. "Armed & Famous" (CBS, 8:00......

In what could be the best cd in a long time, or the most laughable, Fox News is reporting that Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive is negotiating with Rhino Records to record an album of Tom Waits covers. Scarlett Johansson, who earlier this month fell from a horse while filming "The Other Boleyn Girl" in England, is going to jump into the ring with the likes of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, J-Lo, and Juliette Lewis......

Born in LA 33 years-and-a-day ago, June 21, 1973, it seems like Juliette has done it all. She's acted with De Niro, been directed by Woody, and is currently recording her second rock album with none other than Dave Grohl as her drummer. Yesterday's birthday girl emancipated herself from her parents at 14, dropped out of high school at 15, started banging Brad Pitt at 16 in a romance that would last almost four......

Somebody once said that all rock stars want to be actors and all actors want to be rock stars. And everyone responded: Why? For God's sake, why? This is not to cast aspersions on CSI star Gary Dourdan, who will be playing guitar tonight at the Knitting Factory as part of a Katrina victims benefit. Maybe he'll be one of those who, with the power of celebrity, are (kinda) successful at both: Lindsay Lohan,......

It's going to be a wild-and-crazy weekend in the city as festivals descend upon us. Both begin tomorrow and run through the weekend, so keep reading for a heads-up on all the details.
