There are rumors circulating again that the Dodgers might be back in the Randy Johnson sweepstakes, or might acquire Steve Finley, but we'll leave that aside for now.
Oh well. You can't blame Paul DePodesta and Frank McCourt for not trying. As the mainstream baseball media would say, this they "want to win."
About the only thing consistent about the Dodgers this season is their inconsistencies. Two weeks ago, the Dodgers had lost six straight, were in third place, and considered becoming sellers at the trade deadline.
Jayson Werth continues to make a strong impression on LAist with his speed, athleticism, and timely power. Werth homered and scored both runs for the Dodgers, accounting for half of the Dodger hits off of rookie Nate Lowry. Eric Gagne added another one to his DiMaggio-esque 82 consecutive save streak.
These are tough times for the Los Angeles Dodgers. They just went through their second long losing streak of the season, finally beating the Angels 10-5, but find themselves three and a half games behind the Giants and in third place.
The win bodes well for the Dodgers, who are looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 1996. Now, we Angelenos shouldn't get ahead of ourselves. L.A.'s been in first place in June a number of times in recent years. But this season it feels as if the Dodgers have the most complete team in the National League West.
