A Stake Through The Heart Of 'Buffy' Fans

Take something weird, make it cult. Take something cult, make it classic. Take something classic, make it a Joss-less pile of potentially flaming poo. Warner Bros and a team of eagerlings are "rebooting" and updating the 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' franchise without Joss Whedon and the original cast, making the new incarnation sound as appealing as the Human Centipede eating its own ass. Or maybe it'll be fantastic. Breath holding begins now. More on Whedon's reaction and the reaction to his reaction available at your local internet. more ›

DVD Tuesday: Get Ready to Laugh!

             + 1 more

No film could ever capture the inner despair and hopelessness that pervades Cormac McCarthy's magnificent novel, The Road. Still, the film is a despondently faithful adaptation that should please -- if depress -- cineastes. Never before has society's apocalypse felt so hauntingly real. There's only one, maybe two good reasons to watch HBO's moronic True Blood, right? Of all the classic authors I read in college, I return to D.H. Lawrence more than any other. Why hasn't there been a fantastic film adaptation of Sons and Lovers? more ›

LAist Film Calendar: Warning!!! Pedophile, Dr. Horrible & Plenty of Creeps

LAist Film Calendar: Warning!!! Pedophile, Dr. Horrible & Plenty of Creeps

It's easy to write off Warning!!! Pedophile Released sight unseen as cheap exploitation. Besides all those exclamation marks in the title, there's the convenient release on the heels of Roman Polansky's high-profile arrest for child-rape, an appearance by porn star Joanna Angel & a lead actor coming off of Silent Night, Zombie Night and (ahem) Vaginal Holocaust. Never mind the accompanying Dakota Fanning vehicle Father Xmas (at one point rumored to be Fanning's own child-rape film Hounddog). But the film's trailer tells a different story, of disturbed teens, real tragedy & raw emotion that's more Larry Clark than Larry Cohen. Make up your own mind, and then fawn or fight with the cast and crew at the evening showings. more ›

Week Around the -Ists

Week Around the -Ists

A sad week for LAist as they lose their trusted and amazing editor Tony Pierce to the LA Times, but what a blast his last week was. He shared his 25 Favorite CDs of 2007 and wrote a great review of just a good movie, No Country For Old Men. At UCLA, thousands of students celebrated the end of their quarter by running around campus in their undies (lots of photos in a two-part photo essay, one, two). That wasn't the only photo essay either: Joss Whedon/Mutant Enemy friends and Star Trek actors all joined in at the Writers Strike and KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas brought two nights of amazing bands that included Avenged Sevenfold, Linkin Park (Part I), Modest Mouse, Muse, Spoon and The Killers (Part II). Not only is L.A. a great music town, it has just been named the best city for bookish types. For those who are looking for something a little more active, American Gladiators are back (yes!) and if that's not enough, how about a Christmas gift of action and adventure? more ›

'Mutant Enemy Day' Photo Essay

'Mutant Enemy Day' Photo Essay

Despite the ominous stormclouds looming overhead, last Friday, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly creator Joss Whedon and an estimated 350-400 people, comprised of former Mutant Enemy Productions staffmembers, actors, and fans (mobilized through Fans4Writers, with some flying in from across the country and as far away as the United Kingdom and Australia), picketed in support of the ongoing WGA Strike in front of 20th Century Fox. Mutant Enemy staffers at the rally... more ›

Veronica Mars is Back!

Veronica Mars is Back!

Like the "Terminator" before her, "Veronica Mars" is back. One of the few shows to survive the transition from The UPN to The CW, "Veronica Mars" proved once again how good television can and should be and why it rightfully has a place on The CW Fall schedule. Filling the void left by the departure of Joss Whedon’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”, “Veronica Mars” is a smart, funny show with great dialog,... more ›

Was Wizard World Long Beach Lame?

Was Wizard World Long Beach Lame?

According to The Beat, yes it was. Despite appearances by "Buffy" and "Firefly's" (and soon to be the big screen version of Wonder Woman) own Joss Whedon and comic book icon Stan Lee, The Beat claims sales were sluggish for exhibitors making them cranky by the end. Their pictures also suggest that the crowd wasn't nearly as large as they usually are for these kinds of events. Maybe everyone is saving up for Comiccon and E3. more ›
