DVD Tuesday: Anyone excited about MacGruber?

You know it's a slow week when crap like MacGruber heads the list. Like most Saturday Night Live movies, it's a funny 30-second idea that's ninety minutes too long. If Spread didn't pave the way for Ashton Kutcher's exit from Hollywood, surely Killers will, right? Yeah, nope. Solitary Man isn't a great film, but it's further proof that Michael Douglas somehow morphed from an overrated actor to an underrated one. Not being a huge box-office draw has served his talent well. Sure, The Office has steadily gone downhill since this high point. Still, it's better than every comedy on CBS. Whatever happened to the George Lucas that made THX 1138? more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: I Have a Hangover! Get Lost!

Buzz on the The Hangover is so hot that Warner Brothers is already moving ahead on a sequel before the film is even released. Every summer a comedy breaks out of nowhere to be a huge hit. Will this be the one? It probably won't be Land of the Lost. By most accounts, it's a Bewitched Will Ferrell flick instead of an Anchorman one. Away We Go will not work for everyone since it's so amazingly precious. Then again, what else would you expect from the hipster triumvirate of Dave Eggers | Sam Mendes | John Krasinski? more ›

Midnight Movie: Aimee Mann's Christmas Carol

This year, Aimee Mann gave a Christmas gift to the world by sharing videos from her third annual Christmas show. These four gems are just as good as their 2007 counterparts, and the 2008 cast includes guests such as Mann's talented husband, Michael Penn, a hilarious Michael Cera spouting f-bombs in protest of being cast as Tiny Tim, Paul F. Tompkins as a ghost who has technical difficulties delivering his message via Skype, plus John. C. Reilly, Tim Heidecker, Grant Lee Phillips and John Krasinski. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: I'm with Leather

Weekend Movie Guide: I'm with Leather

I'll be in the minority when I attend Leatherheads this weekend because I'm not going to see George Clooney. As an increasingly obsessive fan of he is way overdue to be in a film that properly utilizes his narrow but sharp comic instincts. more ›

Box Office Review: Michael Bay back on (damn!) top

Box Office Review: Michael Bay back on (damn!) top

To those glorious fools who had hoped against hope that The Island might mark the beginning of the end for Michael Bay's filmmaking career, I am loathe to tell you that such wishes now appear to be in vain. Transformers left the North American box office in a twisted wreckage of smoking metal this week, taking in a (groan) record-setting 152.5 million dollars in its opening 7 days. With regard to Mr. Bay, it seems that The Island was but the end of the beginning. He is now free and able to issue forth Transformers sequels well into the next decade. It is a dark time for the Rebellion. more ›

Borat in Rehab, Dirty Polacks & Mike Myers

Borat in Rehab, Dirty Polacks & Mike Myers

6:22 - It's your last chance to text in your vote for Best Movie. I know it hasn't even opened yet, but I bet that somehow Transformers will win. 6:21 - Mike Myers gets a well-deserved laugh after he thanks his parents for teaching him to "never sell out" and immediately follows it with a deliberately over-the-top promo for a Pontiac sedan. Plug away. 6:19 - "Shall I shag him now or shall I... more ›

Nerds are Sexy: LAist's Corey's Top Ten Seven Nerd Boys

"Nerdy" men, or what I like to call "the boy/man next door" have made a strong showing in 2006 and I'm here to list the cream of the crop. 1. John Krasinski - "Jim" the anti-stud in the NBC hit "The Office", he wins us over with his everyday charm. 2. Andy Samberg - This genius 28-year-old newbie to "Saturday Night Live" brought us "Lazy Sunday" and "D**k in a Box" -- he's bringing... more ›
