If so, you may be experiencing sympathy pains for your fellow travelers; according to the Huffington Post, new estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the amount of time Southern Californians spend getting to work is on the rise. The information comes from the 2005-09 American Community Survey. Of 15 million Californians who commute, the majority -- about 2.2 million -- reported that they spend between 20 and 24 minutes getting to their job.

617,000 People Out of Work in LA County in October
New figures released today from the state's Economic Development Department show that the unemployment rate has stayed the same this fall, according to the Daily News. "The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Los Angeles County held steady at 12.6 percent between September and October," which is just above the statewide rate of 12.4 percent. Both figures show slight increases over the rates from October 2009. While there was an increase in local jobs by almost 30,000, a "617,000 people were unemployed in October in Los Angeles County, which has a labor force of nearly 4.9 million." In California last month, 2.25 million people were unemployed.

Thousands of union workers gathered on the south lawn of City Hall yesterday as part of a rally organized by the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, according to the LA Times. Addressing the crowd were several high-profile local politicians, including US Senator Barbara Boxer and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

"L.A. County's jobless rate for November is up from 8.3 percent the previous month - and 5.3 percent in November 2007. Statewide, the rate was 8.4 percent, up from 8.2 percent in October. The national rate is 6.7 percent. The state and local numbers are not great, of course, but they’re not a surprise."

LAX Workers' Strike Ends After Mayor Makes a Deal
Early yesterday afternoon, members of SEIU Local 1877 who work at LAX in a variety of capacities in jobs as janitors, skycaps, and wheelchair attendants, went on strike. They have been seeking "higher wages and affordable health care," explaining that they wish to have more pay and security in order to ensure the quality of their lives and their work. The workers opted to strike only when talks between their union and the 9 contractors who broker their employment with LAX hit a stalemate. Although the walk-out was not expected to derail operations at the city's very busy airport, it did affect travel times for customers of United, Southwest, and American.
