Get Out: Things to do on Christmas Day
It's Christmas and hey, not everything is closed. So here are some options of what you can do today...
Pencil This In: Friday
So many events, so little time. Concete Frequency's latest installment is tonight and there's always Disney on Ice (skaters, not Walt), but here's a sampling of the other good stuff to be done in LA tonight.
Sunday Book Review: Caspian Rain
Caspian Rain is a novel about longing and belonging. Set just before the Islamic Revolution in Iran, 12-year-old Yaas narrates the story of her family – a family that’s just as divided as the country. Her father, Omid, is from a wealthy Jewish Tehranian family. He feels restricted by the rules dictated by the upper-class society, the rules imposed on him as a son and rules he must keep in order to not disgrace...
Newt Apologizes to Latinos en Espanol
When the former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, said that bi-lingual education taught "the language of living in a ghetto" and not the language of prosperity, many were outraged. Since Los Angeles is the second largest Spanish-speaking city in the world, the offense couldn't have felt stronger in the US than here. Then Newt said that he meant ghetto in a Jew way... because they're not prosperous? Preposterous! We're sure LA's chosen people...
What's Bruin at UCLA
UCLA Men's Basketball is NO.2 in the Nation -- According to the AP and Coaches polls. The Bruins came out strong at home this past Saturday against the Stanford Trees Cardinals. The Ohio Buckeyes comfortably sit at No.1 following their victory against Wisconsin on Sunday. Our friends over at USC moved up to No.23 following an impressive season both at home and on the road. The Bruins finish their season undefeated at home and...
A.M. News: Magic Mountain Stays! and more...
Brrrrrrrrr... did you enjoy cuddling under your blankets last night during that blast of cold weather? Don't forget that it snowed in Los Angeles less than a year ago (and will SCV be so lucky?). Maybe this is Los Angeles' way of saying hello to Beckham with a little frosty cold treat. We're enjoying it. After all, some of us are transplants. Besides the top stories that you probably already know by now, A.M....
One Big J-Date
Seeing a Matisyahu show is a lot like summer camp on Long Island. Or speed dating for Jews. Or as one friend called it, "One Big J-Date." The Greek on Wednesday night was no exception. LAist has had a thing for Matis even since the "Live at Stubbs" album and an electric show at House of Blues last summer. He has a great stage presence and really engages the audience throughout the show. Plus...
The Mel Gibson Game: Drink Til You Hate Everyone
- LA's own Moxie drank the other night and live-blogged to find out how long it would take to become anti-Semitic. It earned her a front page post on Metafilter where the kids there, as could be predicted, greeted it with mixed reviews. - Then today, MSNBC's own Joe Scarborough ripped off the bit for his tv show and then had the nerve to write about it on his blog. - The Poor Man...
Mel Gibson Sorry for Drunk Driving, Not for Hating Jews
"The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." - Mel Gibson, who now has something else to add to his list of controversial quotes regarding religion. You'd think that even if you said that drunk, you'd apologize your ass off the next day. Especially if you're in the Popularity Game and you work alongside a fair share of Hebrew ladies and gentlemen. Instead, after Mel Gibson's arrest for DUI, and filmed...
