A luggage container was "drawn" into an engine of a Japan Airlines jet as it pushed from its gate at LAX at approximately 1:30 p.m. The plane was immediately grounded and the 245 passengers safely departed back into the terminal as authorities investigated what-at-the-time was an unknown object. The San Diego military jet crash that killed four family members back in December was "clearly avoidable," Marine Corps Major Gen. Randolf Alles said today, citing delayed maintenance and faulty decisions by controllers and the pilot. The Corps announced that they have disciplined 13 people including four--the commander of the fighter squadron involved in the crash, its top maintenance officer and two others--of their duty. more ›

A FA-18 Delta military jet that crashed into a San Diego neighborhood shortly before noon killed at least three people who have not been identified yet. Investigators know that a grandmother, a mother and two children lived in the residence and say one person is unaccounted for, according to AP. The crash occurred as the jet prepared to land at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, two miles away. The world's largest passenger jet, the double-decker, 489-seat Airbus A380, is scheduled to land at LAX at 9:15 a.m. After the plane arrives, 200 to 250 invited guests will get a two-hour "familiarization'' flight. The jumbo airliner was the first to be delivered to Emirates Airlines, which will begin a nonstop LAX-Dubai service this fall (on a Boeing 777).
