The cause of death for a newborn found inside a Redondo Beach trash can in early March has been deemed asphyxia and classified as a homicide, the Los Angeles County coroner's office has announced, via the LA Times.
Homicide, Says Coroner, of Dead Baby Found in Redondo Beach Trash Can
Prosecutors Have Yet to File a Case Against Mother of Trash Bin Baby
24-year-old Jessie Lauren Canfield says she didn't know she was pregnant before she delivered a baby girl in a bedroom during a house party in Redondo Beach last weekend. But the District Attorney has not yet filed a case against Canfield, citing a need for further investigation into the events leading up to the baby being left either dead or to die in a trash receptacle, according to the Daily News. It is precisely the baby's death that kept the DA's office from filing charges on Friday as perhaps anticipated; Deputy District Attorney Christi Frey noted in a report "[the] coroner's office has not yet determined cause of death and has not yet ruled the death a homicide." It will take 2-3 weeks for the cause of death to be determined, during which time investigators can continue to look into the bizarre details of the baby's birth and Canfield's actions.
