DVD Tuesday: You Basterd!*
Sure, it may not have received the near-universal acclaim of Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs, but I thought Inglourious Basterds was a welcome return to form for Tarantino after the over-long Kill Bill diptych and the dull Death Proof. I really dug The Hangover the first time I saw it, but a second viewing wasn't nearly as satisfying (contrast that with, say, Anchorman which I found far funnier on the tenth screening.) More than any other movie, The Goods suffered from all the Hangover success since it seemed mild in comparison. It's worth a look on DVD, though. The same guys for Taking Woodstock. I was apparently the only one in the world who loved it, but how can you not love Ang Lee? The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-Ray = perfect gift for Dad.
Box Office Review: America Loves Abusing Aliens!
In a rare show of good taste, Americans flocked to the alien civil rights drama, District 9, as it rang up a surprising $37M in sales to top the weekend box office. Last week's champ, G.I. Joe: Didn't Suck As Much As Transformers, had a decent second frame ($22.5M | $98.7M), managing to hold off newcomer The Time Traveler's Wife ($19.2M). After that it was the mostly delightful Julie & Julia ($12.4M | $43.6M), the stupid G-Force ($6.9M | $99M) and The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, which debuted to a disappointing $5.3M.
Weekend Movie Guide: Welcome to District 9
District 9 is generating the sort of low-level buzz that is often the sign of an unexpected, breakout hit. Thank God, the plug got pulled on Halo or District 9 never would have been made. Also, thank God that the increasingly on-the-nose Peter Jackson didn't direct it. Davis Guggenheim isn't nearly the documentary filmmaker that a Kirby Dick or an Errol Morris is, but the subject matter of It Might Get Loud kept me enthralled (LAist review here). What Zeppelin fan wouldn't love to see Jimmy Page not only play with The Edge and Jack White but show off his record collection, too. Not sure what to make of The Goods. Critics are torching it, but someone compared it to Wet Hot American Summer which was only incredibly hilarious and inventive.
Football Legends, Celebrities, Madden Invade Malibu
Football season is upon us, which means that Madden season is also right around the corner. To celebrate the latest edition of the game, Madden NFL 10, the good people at EA Sports and XBOX 360 gathered an impressive cast of NFL legends and celebrities in Malibu to play a game of flag football.

LAist Interview: Neal Brennan
Neal Brennan (center) made a name for himself writing jokes alongside Dave Chappelle. With a sketch comedy show that reached legendary status in the "Chappelle's Show" and a cult classic movie, Half Baked already under his belt, Neal has transitioned into directing. Last year he directed VH-1's Totally Awesome, a hilarious Made-For-TV 80's spoof that he also co-wrote. Neal is currently working on a Will Ferrell produced comedy feature that stars Jeremy Piven. Despite...
Box Office Review: Ah, shit! The Rock is bankable!
In yet another blow to the human race, Dwayne Johnson's The Game Plan was this weekend's box-office champ, taking in a richly undeserved 22.6 million dollars in its debut. You know what that means--an even worse sequel (assuming that's possible) is virtually certain to be made. Let's hope it goes straight to DVD and doesn't rob theater space from better, less life-affirming movies. In second place, also in its first weekend, was Peter Berg's...
Weekend Movie Guide: Passage to India!
Though it opens Wednesday, I'm including in this guide because Wes Anderson is a director whose films you just automatically have to see and the more advance warning, the better. His latest jewel box follows three brothers (Wilson, Brody, Schwartzman) who decide to travel together across India in an effort to mend the rift that has grown between them all. Expect fantastical plot twists and plenty of whimsy.
It's All About Ari, Ari, Ari on Entourage
It's Sunday, so that means Entourage on HBO night. Tonight, LAX goes Orange Alert compliments of Homeland Security causing the boys and Ari the usual trouble. Of course, in the end it always works out. Above is a NSFW montage of Ari at his best, including a good observation of his mannerisms, from the first two seasons. The best parts: his interactions with his assistant, Lloyd, and his wife....
Entourage is having the Best Week Ever
If loads of adoring fans, access to every VIP room in town, and a loyal following weren't enough, HBO's Entourage has captured the nation. Yesterday the show's creator, Doug Ellin was interviewed on uber NPR news show Talk of the Nation. The story of an actor's life in LA, the show has found the international following as far as Malaysia. From The Grill to The Urth Caffe and Toast, every week I look forward to seeing where the boys will show up. Here in LA, I have spotted the cast at many local hangouts. Kevin Connolly at Nate 'n Al, Jerry Ferrara at Pink's, Jeremy Piven at Lulu's, and most recently Adrian Grenier jogging up Runyon Canyon. On Sunday night we'll get to see where they go next.
TV Junkie: 'Rescue Me' Returns; Eric Idle on Ferguson
A Word or 39: It feels like Wednesdays are going to be the night with new programming this time of year. It feels like it, but it doesn't look like it since not much of this stuff is watchable. Hidden Palms?? For effsake. Tonight - Wednesday - June 13th, 2007 Mets @ Dodgers (PRIME, 7:00 p.m.) Hidden Palms (the CW, 8:00 p.m.) Country club party time The Next Best Thing: Who Is the Greatest...
TV Junkie: If You Got HBO It's a Good Weekend for You
A Word or 36: Baseball season is just starting up folks, am not sure how comprehensively I should be posting gametimes on TV Junkie. Weeknights I will be putting gametimes for the Dodgers and Angels here. Any feedback is appreciated. Tonight - Friday - April 6th, 2007 A's @ Angels (KCOP, 7:00 p.m.) Lakers @ Sonics (KCAL, 7:30 p.m.) Ghost Whisperer/Close to Home/NUMB3RS (CBS, 8-11:00 p.m.) From the paranormal to terrorists, all new stuff....
TV Junkie: Winter X Games; Martin & Lewis; Smallville & Supernatural; Baldwin & Macy
A Word or 51: So last night it was either Klaus Kinski or American Idol - they're both abject and base pornography but Kinski won. Get home early today to check out the Winter X Games; other than some The Office reruns the CW seems to have the most new programming but that's not saying much. Tonight - Thursday - January 25th, 2007 The Caddy (TCM, 5:00 p.m.) Classic Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin...
And the Emmy might go to . . ..
The Prime Time Emmy Award nominations were announced today and yes, LAist was left out again this year. We keep waiting for the opportunity to use that old yet tried and true saying "its just a pleasure to be nominated" but we never seem to get the chance.
Gone Today, Hair Tomorrow
So we noticed something when catching a few minutes of Chasing Liberty on HBO last weekend. (Btw, LAist was just channel surfing and not actively watching the forgettable Mandy Moore flick – but we so happened to catch a glimpse of dreamy Matthew Goode from Match Point in it.) But back to the purpose of this post.
The Coffee Buzz
Aaah, lucky number thirteen. Well, here on LAist, there's no such thing as an unlucky number, although there is such a thing as a coffee shop that's famous. You know, in sort of a trendy, wannabe, Paris Hilton kind of way.
