As predicted, the late State Senator Jenny Oropeza was re-elected last night to serve the 28th District, which covers Long Beach and parts of the South Bay, according to ABC7. A special election will be held to put another Democrat in her place in the vacant seat. Oropeza died on October 20th "of complications from a blood clot in her abdomen" following a long battle with liver cancer.
Long Beach State Sen. Oropeza May Win Seat Posthumously
State Senator Jenny Oropeza may have lost her life on October 20th following a long illness, but she may yet win a second term come November 2nd, says the Long Beach Press-Telegram. In polls taken prior to Oropeza's death, the incumbent Democrat was leading in the race that includes Republican John Stammreich and Libertarian David Ruskin as her posthumous opponents in a heavily Democratic voting area. Should Oropeza get the win on Tuesday there would be a special election held to install a new Democrat in her seat.

Senator Jenny Oropeza (D - Long Beach) has died, according to the Sacramento Bee. The 53-year-old was diagnosed with a blood clot in her abdomen earlier this year and had been largely missing from the floor since. She was an State Assemblymember from 2000 to 2006, when she was elected to the Senate. Before that she was a member of the Long Beach School Board and Long Beach City Council. R.I.P. Jenny Oropeza.

Sales Tax Increase for Public Transit to Cost $25 Annually
As an assembly bill that would enable Metro to put a half-cent sales tax increase on November's ballot makes its way towards the state Senate this month, a report released from the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) said that such an increase would only cost people $25 extra per year (if the sales tax rate goes up, it will go from 8.25% to 8.75%, "translating to an extra 50 cents in taxes for every $100 you spend on goods and service," says Road Sage Steve Hymon).
