After a summer of memorable shows at the Hollywood Bowl, the 2009 posters will be exhibited at the Arclight along with many images created for bowl performances throughout the years. No one will forget Grace Jones master class in theatricality and the night that Jenny Lewis and Ray Lamontagne shared their unique authenticity with the Bowl audience. These shows and more hold a special spot in our hearts and now can take their place on our walls.

Tonight Portland-based pop folk sextet Loch Lomond will be performing at Spaceland with Oakland's own garage rock outfit the Heavenly States in tow. Early in the afternoon, Brooklyn-based psych rock outfit Oneida will be performing at the Echo. And, lastly, Melbourne-based twee-pop act the Summer Cats will be performing at the Echo late in the evening for this week's edition of Part Time Punks. But we strongly suggest doing whatever it takes to get into the Hollywood Bowl to catch Maine-based folk troubadour Ray LaMontagne. Local ruddy-haired songstress Jenny Lewis (LAist Review, #2, #3, #4) and LAist favorites Blitzen Trapper (LAist Interview) are slated to kick things off.

Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird (LAist Review) is poised to headline the Greek Theatre with Syracuse-bred indie rockers Ra Ra Riot and yet another LAist favorite, Cincinnati's own garage rock outfit Heartless Bastards. Local alt-rockers Everest (LAist review, #2) will be performing with Red Cortez (LAist Review, #2) at UCLA's Hammer Museum for this week's edition of Also I Like To Rock. And, lastly, Brooklyn's crown jewel, the erratic experimental indie rock collective known as Dirty Projectors (LAist Review), will be gracing the Troubadour.

Your sleepless nights of anxiously awaiting an official announcement are over. After a plethora of postponements, swirling rumors and premature prattle, the 2009 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival roster is finally here.

December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to albums that came out in 2008.

Tonight we've got our fair share of shows, but nothing extraordinary. Legendary English rock band the Who will be playing their second and final night at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown. Much to our surprise, NY-based hip hop group Onyx will be playing a reunion show at the Echoplex. And local folk singer/song-writer Charlie Wadhams will be kicking off the first night of a month-long Sunday Residency at Tangier. But we recommend stopping by Club Nokia, which just opened its doors earlier this month, to catch LA mainstay Beck (LAist Review, #2) in all his glory. And for those of you who are still on the fence, Jenny Lewis (LAist Review) is also slated to open the show.

Never before in Jenny Lewis' hyper-extended career has the ruddy-haired front woman sounded so affected. Her folksy, small-town image—which has been trumped by her larger-than-life affiliations—does give way to some semblance of musical authenticity. And, surely, the majority of her most ambitious effort to date, 2008's Acid Tongue, is performed with great gusto. But Lewis can not avoid giving the slightest impression that she is straining for her effects. Sometimes in the grip of great passion you fail to uphold your intent.

                      

Last Thursday, Rilo Kiley frontwoman and Silver Lake "Pioneer Woman" Jenny Lewis (MySpace) returned to Southern California, headlining at The Orpheum Theatre with support from openers Pierre de Reeder (MySpace) and the recently-reunited Beachwood Sparks (MySpace). It was the second-to-last stop on Lewis' Tour, which began in mid-September at Spaceland (MySpace) -- see reviews at Web In Front and Classical Geek Theatre -- and The Echo (MySpace).

Tomorrow music magazine Under the Radar will auction off handmade protest posters by some of indie music's biggest names. In the photos from the project, the musicians, hold their posters to shout there message loud and proud. Brit Daniel from Spoon show off his his 'VIVA LA RAZA' poster, Sharon Jones pleads "END THIS WAR NOW', and OK GO warns 'THEY BANK ON YOUR APATHY' .

It's rumored that actor Zooey Deschanel of She & Him will at tonight's Jenny Lewis show at Spaceland. "She'll be there supporting.wether [sic] she'll sing or just be in attendance I dunno...but I found out she will actually be at the show," someone wrote on a Rilo Kiley message board.

          

In the previous installations of Coachella there have been some huge headliners. Rage Against the Machine, Radiohead, Bjork, The Beastie Boys but none quite on the level of day two's headliner, the Purple One, Prince. From the moment he hit the stage with Morris Day and Shelia E. it was apparent that the audience was in for a lesson in musicianship and showmanship. As he played through a set mixed of standards and the cover everyone was talking about (more on that in a second) he demonstrated his true mastery of musical performance. Whether it was his virtuoso guitar solos or his dance moves there was never a dull moment in the performance. But the real treat came when Prince played a cover of Radiohead's breakout hit "Creep." There have been many covers of the song but none as dramatic and unique as this cover. The song was given the Prince treatment, a few word changes and an incredible guitar solo. Before leaving the stage he declared "Coachella will always be Prince's house" and after the performance he gave Saturday, it will take alot to prove that statement wrong.

As far as live variety shows go, it doesn’t get much better than the 826LA Book*Smart events at Largo. The event, which usually takes place once a month, features an author, a comedian and a musician. Saturday’s event centered around headliner Zooey Deschanel, who blew the audience away with her vocal chops and helped raise funds for 826LA with sewn duck heads (it’ll make sense as you keep reading).

Thursday night was a busy one and I probably could've used more of a decompression stop between the Hotel Cafe and the Avalon to give my brain ample time to switch genres, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. It all began at 7 p.m. at the Hotel Cafe with Amy LaVere. I immediately knew I liked her when she took the stage with an upright bass that had a Bass (fish) sticker in the middle of it. It was cheeky, and I suppose that’s one way you can refer to LaVere. She took the stage wearing a trench coat and high heels, and throughout the set alternated between the upright bass and an electric one.

You can tell when a performer has that "it" factor about them, that indescribable thing that makes them irresistible to watch. Jenny Lewis, front woman of Rilo Kiley, most definitely has "it." LAist favorites Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins returned to LA and Spaceland on Thursday night. The show consisted basically of the songs from their album . We decided to go after having the album on rotation for weeks, and liking each more each time. The songs are steeped in enough traditonal styles that they feel somewhat timeless. "Rabbit Fur Coat" is in a way a sad inversion of Dolly Parton's classic "Coat of Many Colors," and the other songs meld traditional styles like gospel and bluegrass with contemporary rock.

The Bronx portray Black Flag in the new movie about Germs’ singer, Darby Crash. You can watch the trailer for that movie HERE. The Bronx and Wires on Fire will soon be on tour with Priestess and Riverboat Gamblers (they better have their game tight, because both of those bands are really good live).
