A LAPD representative explained that the victim,Jeffrey Stenroos, an 8-year veteran with the force, was on his assigned patrol outside the school when he was investigating a possible burglary in a nearby vehicle. The officer was shot in the chest, but was wearing a protective vest, which is being credited for minimizing the damage of the bullet wound.
