The After Dark Film Festival is an annual showcase for new voices in horror. This year, they make the leap from distributors to producers with After Dark Originals. For one week only, Laemmle's Sunset screens these five fearsome features, some with filmmakers in tow. Here's the rundown:
Weekend Movie Guide: After Dark Originals Herald A Whole Lotta Horror
LAist Film Calendar 01/06-01/09: LACMA Hits The Road, Cinefamily Has Dogteeth
The year's just begun, and LACMA already wants to drop out. Their Golden Age of Road Movies series kicks off this week with counterculture combos Five Easy Pieces & Play It As It Lays (Friday night) and Easy Rider & Zabriskie Point (Saturday night). Actress Karen Black appears in-person after Five Easy Pieces, whereas Saturday's program goes a little easier on the pieces, halving LACMA's standard admission to $5. It's all in conjunction with LACMA's William Eggleston exhibition, which doesn't hit the road until January 16th.
Box Office Review: Stallone on top! What year is it?
Sylvester Stallone continued the late-career resurgence started by Rocky Balboa by virtually willing The Expendables to the top of the box-office heap. The nostalgic piece of pulp hauled in $35M to easily dispatch Eat Pray Love ($23.7M). Last week's champ, The Other Guys, enjoyed a strong hold in its second weekend ($18M | $70.5M) while Inception continued to print money ($11.3M | $248.5M). The wonderful Scott Pilgrim vs. the World failed to catch fire and only earned a disappointing $10.5M.
Weekend Movie Guide: See Scott Pilgrim!
How odd that the weekend of August 13th would turn out to be the most intriguing one of the summer. Many of you will probably not see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and that would be a huge mistake. I blame Universal for its lack of buzz because -- trust me -- the movie is so much better than the trailers show. Even if you have never picked up a comic book or played a video game, you will enjoy this sweet, fantastical film. The so-called "guy" movie this weekend is The Expendables. Eh, I'll wait until it goes into heavy rotation on TNT.
DVD Tuesday: Pull my Crank!
Ever since seeing Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, I've thought that Jason Statham had a great screen presence. It's a damn shame that he doesn't make more movies like The Bank Job and less movies like Crank 2: High Voltage (although The Expendables looks like good fun). If you don't own Requiem for a Dream there is no excuse now as it is being offered for dirt-cheap on Blu-Ray. Ass to ass! Want to see a movie that you've probably never heard of and is remarkably beautiful? Try Silent Light. Homicide is a superb example of what a great writer David Mamet used to be before he descended into a parody of himself (State and Main, too!)
DVD Tuesday: Let This One In!
Let the Right One In was a fiendishly good reimainging of the vampire story. Naturallly, it is now being re-made into what will surely be an inferior, American film. I thought Mickey Rourke gave the performance of the year in The Wrestler, but Sean Penn was almost as impressive with his rendering of the late Harvey Milk. Speaking of fine actors, Anne Hathaway stirs my drink. While I liked Synedoche, New York, I was let down by it because of my absurdly high expectations for Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut. Role Models was better than it had any right to be. I'm still amazed that Seann William Scott is the sole survivor of the American Pie crowd.
The Best (and worst) Films of the Year
While 2008 was no 1999 in terms of truly amazing films, it was better than most may think. Last year, I went with a top 10 that was headed by the wondrous and magical . Accordingly, I've put them at the very top of my list. The rest are in alphabetical order. See each one of them and I promise you will have lived a better life once you're done.
DVD Tuesday: Yes, I liked The House Bunny
You know how some movies are better because of the audience in the theater with you? I think that's why I enjoyed ?)
Box Office Review: Bad Movie Wins Again
Despite not being terribly funny, opened to a relatively disappointing $12.3M ($18.5M).
DVD Tuesday: Hollywood's Darling Arrives
In ten years, we'll remember this movie for introducing Olivia Thirlby | Photo courtesy of Fox Searchlight
Box Office Review: Who knew?
With a huge release hitting theaters virtually every Friday, it's rare that a movie tops the box office over successive weekends and yet that's exactly what being the other). Has Judd's stardust finally turned into potato flakes?
Box Office Review: Audience taste trapped in 10,000 B.C.
Despite a critical reception that could charitably be called awful, ($5.7M).
Weekend Movie Guide: The Bank Job
I've always thought it was a shame that Jason Statham got stuck in the ghetto of glossy, empty action flicks. You'd never guess it by watching looks to be a winner.
Weekend Movie Guide: Uwe is Back!
After a busy holiday season, there's a pronounced lull in the film distribution business this weekend. The lazy plan is just to go wide with a few films that have already been playing in Los Angeles for a few weeks ( is only a week away.
Londonist's Top 10 Film-Related Brit List of 2006
Our pals at Londonist are the first to jump on the orgy of Best Of lists, so heres what they have to say... A list for LA? Got to be film related, but because we don't have a film industry anymore I've had to alternate between a great flick of 2006 (with a British connection) and an associated great Brit. Don't worry you'll see what I mean. So in reverse order: 10 - Steve...
