Blazers 82, Clippers 80 - Portland blew a 14 point lead in Staples Center one night after blowing a 15 point lead on the very same court. This time they were playing the Clippers, so things worked out OK. Los Angeles managed a pathetic 29 points in the first half, but did make a noble effort in the second. Corey Maggette was hot with 32 points, but missed a big shot with eight ticks left.......

The symbol of the new year is a baby, and what better baby to ask for predictions than LAist's own sports editor? Baby Adam is much more clear-headed and clairvoyant than the adult version. We're turning to the guru of Gerber, the sultan of spittle, to see what's in store for 2008 and beyond. Q: Thanks for chatting with us, but what makes you qualified? A: I may only be 9 months old, but I've......

After the 2000 season, then Dodgers general manager Kevin Malone offered pitcher Darren Dreifort a five-year $55 million contract. Dreifort had come off of a 12-9 season with a 4.16 ERA. Contract in hand Dreifort made 26 starts, 60 relief appearances and 15 trips to the operating table. He did not pitch for the last two years of his contract. This past offseason GM Ned Colletti signed free agent pitcher Jason Schmidt to a......

Dodgers 10, Phillies 3 - Imagine how good the Dodgers would be if Jason Schmidt were healthy. On Monday it was another All Star, Brad Penny, who notched his 11th win of the season and gave the Blue Crew their 5th in a row. Jeff Kent and Matt Kemp each contributed a three-run shot. The Phillies trailed by as many as nine en-route to their MLB leading 10,001st franchise loss. Beckham Watch - There's drama......

Before I start with the obvious, let me talk about a positive from the Dodger’s Friday night 6-5 in 10 innings loss to the Florida Marlins. When My Boyfriend homered in the bottom of the fifth, the MVP chants started. It was really awesome since the last time I heard those chants at the Stadium was when Adrian Beltre had his outstanding season in 2004. Beltre would end up second in voting to Barry......

Suns 119, Lakers 110 - Everybody saw this one coming, but at least the Lakers made a game of it. Already trailing 3-1 in the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Lakers faced double-digit deficits for much of the night. However, they pulled within two in the third quarter and five in the fourth thanks to strong performances from Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom. Kobe had a typical 34 point game, but he needed......

Suns 113, Lakers 100 - The Laker's season could be down to one game. The Suns outshone Los Angeles and took a 3-1 series lead thanks to huge performances from Steve Nash (23 assists, 17 points) and Amare Stoudemire (27 points, 21 rebounds). Nash's assist total was one shy off the all time playoff record, held by Magic Johnson (who was in the stands) and John Stockton. Not bad company. On the other side of......

Ducks 4, Wild 1 - After a wild finish in Minnesota, the teams kept up the bad blood with a pre-game confrontation during warmups. Players crowded the ice with no officials around, but ultimately no blows were thrown. Once the game got started Anaheim got on a roll. They outshot the Wild 39-27 and clinced the first round of the playoffs. Dodgers 8, Rockies 1 - After resting several key players the day before, the......

Clippers 103, Suns 99 - The sun hasn't set on the Clipper's playoff hopes yet. Los Angeles surprised Phoenix, who played their regular starters despite a lock on the #2 seed in the West. The Clippers need to beat New Orleans (a/k/a Oklahoma City) on Wednesday and root for Portland to beat Golden State. That scenario would tie them with the Warriors at .500. The teams split their season series, but the Clippers would advance......

Indians 7, Angels 6 - If you haven't been glued to ESPN or the Weather Channel, you might not have noticed that snow postponed the Indian's first home series. Getting desperate for a balmier climate, they opted to play their next set in Wisconsin. You could guess there would be some great signs in a game played in Milwaukee between Los Angeles and Cleveland. Things turned out pretty well for the quasi-home crowd. The teams......

Rockies 6, Dodgers 3 - It was a beautiful day for a ballgame. It was so nice, the mayor came out for the Dodger's home opener against Colorado. But coming off a four game sweep in San Francisco, it turned out the Dodgers brought some of the Giant's bad luck back to LA. Former Giant-turned-Dodger Jason Schmidt took the loss and pulled his hamstring. Teammate Matt Kemp smashed his shoulder into an outfield video board......

With a weekend 3-game sweep of the elderly San Francisco Giants under their collective belt, the Dodgers (4-2) open their regular season home schedule at Dodger Stadium this afternoon against the Colorado Rockies (3-3). Prized off-season acquisition Jason Schmidt (1-0) is scheduled to start, and his first pitch is scheduled for 1:10pm. For those taking an extra long lunch today (and you know who you are, as this one's already sold out), here's what......

The Dodgers really know how create drama. After taking a 5-1 lead in the eighth inning, relief pitcher Rudy Seanez* loaded the bases giving up consecutive singles to Johnny Estrada, Geoff Jenkins and Kevin Mench with one out. Closer Takashi Saito came into the game at that point and managed to get out of the inning with a 5-3 lead after giving up a two-run double to Craig Counsell. As if that wasn’t enough......

Clippers 90, Lakers 82 -  LA's teams seem like they're headed in opposite directions. Kobe had 29, but the Clippers had five players in double digits. After the showdown at Staples, the Clippers have won seven of eight while the Lakers have dropped four of their last five. Both teams sit towards the bottom of the playoff field, with the Clippers (now a .500 team) only trailing their arena mate by a game and a half.......

Well after two games, there's sure a lot to wallow in. New acquisitions Luis Gonzalez and Juan Pierre are 0-for-15. Starting pitchers Derek Lowe and Randy Wolf have combined for a not-so-stellar 9.00 ERA in 10 innings. And Rafael Furcal remains mired on the disabled list with a sprained ankle (not necessarily the best of injuries for a speedy lead-off hitter). However, as Rocky Balboa mentioned to Clubber Lang repeatedly in the third round......

Brewers 4, Dodgers 3 - The bums are playing like it. But they can still go 160-2, right? We'll find out on Wednesday when ace Jason Schmidt takes the mound. Angels 8, Rangers 3 - Anaheim is off to a great start, and guess what? The bullpen didn't allow a run in 3 and 2/3 innings. Sammy Sosa was held to 1 for 4. Nuggest 111, Lakers 105 - Denver just took away some breathing......

Rockets 107, Lakers 104, OT - When you have Kobe on your team, you want him to take the critical shots. You want him to take a lot of shots, period. Kobe took so many (44) that he had 53 points and made a clutch off-balance three pointer to send the game to overtime. Unfortunately, he "only" made 19 of his shots and missed a critical three pointer at the end of overtime. Clippers 105,......

The baseball off-season creates a brewing anticipation that crescendos to the molto-fortissimo of Opening Day. Before I start waxing poetic about the Dodgers, I'll present to you a list of facts about the changes to the team in this off-season: * Right fielder J.D. Drew, reneging on his word, declined his option on his contract and ended up signing with the Boston Red Sox. The Princess (as T.J. Simers of the LA Times called......

Hornets 105, Lakers 89 - New Orleans got healthy in a big way, and ailing Kobe Bryant played but wasn't the best guard on the court. Hornet Chris Paul put away 26 points and 11 rebounds, inspiring Kobe to remark "You won't be seeing too many dudes like that this season, getting into the paint like that. I love his game." Ducks 4, Predators 0 - Former Duck Paul Kariya led Nashville into Anaheim,......

Orlando - When the Chicago Cubs decided (foolishly) to pay $40 million for southpaw Ted Lilly, they no longer could afford the much better Jason Schmidt who was scooped up today by the Dodgers. Schmidt who has racked up an impressive 78-37 record in his five-and-a-half years with the SF Giants, has been disappointing of late only able to earn 11 wins last year and lost 9 times. Still he will probably become the ace......

The only things sweeter than the Dodgers winning their 15th game out of 16 yesterday in the bottom of the 10th from a walk-off home run were how they made it to the 10th, and who they beat. Recently-acquired starter Greg Maddux is how they got there, as he shut out Frisco for the eight innings that he pitched, totally baffling the struggling visitors on just 68 pitches. Sadly, his textbook schooling of the......

Well at least the weather was good. The Dodgers, as well as Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day Saturday April 15th. The Blue Crew looked to improve their record against arch rival San Francisco Giants but found themselves falling short and wondering what happened. It was an eventful and dare we say, entertaining series if not a successful one. The Dodgers dropped 2 of 3 to the Giants and fell below .500 (6-7)......

See, we told you the Dodgers would be alright. Last night Jeff Weaver mowed down the Giants, pitching eight shutout innings in a 6-0 victory. It was the team's second straight victory over the hated Giants, and the Azul have hit every pitcher they've face so far except Jason Schmidt. So now is there any question that the Dodgers got the better of the Kevin Brown deal? Weaver has been one of the most......

The Angels won and the Dodgers lost on Opening Day, so as you can imagine, the Los Angeles Times interprets this a sign of things to come. While LAist doesn't doubt the Angels are a great team, we'd like people to evaluate the Dodgers on more than one game against Jason Schmidt. Perhaps halo fans should be concerned that only Vlad Guerrero could muster any damage off of Texas' Ryan Drese. But then again,......
