Weekend Movie Guide 07/08: Bowie 'Fell to Earth', Bateman Fells 'Horrible Bosses'

David Bowie built a musical career on outsider personas like Ziggy Stardust & Aladdin Sane. In The Man Who Fell to Earth, his first starring role, he's literally from another planet. Rialto Pictures celebrates the film's 35th anniversary with a director's cut opening exclusively at the Nuart. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide 03/18: The British Are Coming - To Take Our Aliens!

Weekend Movie Guide 03/18: The British Are Coming - To Take Our Aliens!

Hollywood's alien invasion continues, and the British are coming along for the ride! The sci-fi road-trip comedy Paul stars Edgar Wright's favorite funnymen, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost, a CGI alien voiced by Seth Rogen and appearances from every comedian under the sun, including Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Joe Lo Truglio, Bill Hader & Blythe Danner. Furthering the film's comedic cred, Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) directs, with Pegg & Frost pulling double duty (quadruple duty?) as writers. more ›

Box Office Review: Expendables Not Expendable!

The Expendables has legs, albeit creaky and wobbly ones. The Sly Stallone actioner hauled in $16.5M ($64.8M) to hold off shitty newcomer Vampires Suck ($12.2M | $18.5M). In close succession after that it was the silly Eat Pray Love ($12M | $47.1M), the mediocre Lottery Ticket ($11.1M), the okay The Other Guys ($10.1M | $88.1M) and the nude-tastic Piranha 3D ($10M). more ›

Actor Jason Bateman Cuts in Line for iPhone 4, Gets Booed

Actor Jason Bateman Cuts in Line for iPhone 4, Gets Booed

Jason Bateman today was on the receiving end of cat calls and evil eyes from exasperated Apple customers today after he was allowed to cut in front of hundreds (some say thousands) of people waiting at The Grove to purchase their reserved iPhone 4. The "Arrested Development" actor was reportedly sitting in line like everyone else until an Apple employee spotted and snagged him out to escort him into the store. Then, proudly a new owner of today's hottest phone, Bateman was promptly booed as he exited. more ›

DVD Tuesday: Up in Precious!

Following its debut at the Telluride Film Festival, Up in the Air was being heralded as a strong contender for a Best Picture Oscar. The fact that it didn't win anything at last Sunday's ceremony should tell you it wasn't nearly as weighty and significant as early press indicated. Still, it was another solid film by Jason Reitman and another effortless turn by Clooney. more ›

DVD Tuesday: A Seriously Good Film!

We can all agree that the Coen Brothers are the finest filmmakers working in America right now, can't we? A Serious Man is further proof of their complete mastery of the medium. Aside from numerous other wonderful scenes, the bar mitzvah and the closing shot at the school are beyond brilliant. I watched The Time Traveler's Wife expecting a good, solid cry. Sadly, it did not deliver (though, Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams were their usual solid selves). How did a movie with as much talent as Couples Retreat turn out to be such a dud? Bronson was uneven as a film, but Tom Hardy delivered an Oscar-worthy performance. It's so searing and violent that, frankly, I'd be worried to be in the same room as Tom Hardy. That couldn't all have been acting. 19 films by David Lean and Charlie Chaplin for under $75. That's called a 'buy', folks! Boobs! Boobs! Boobs! more ›

DVD Tuesday: (223) Days of Her

DVD Tuesday: (223) Days of Her

Having just gotten out of a relationship which had eerie parallels to (500) Days of Summer, I have no intention of seeing it anytime soon. You should, though. It's wonderfully melancholy and real (excepting the amazing musical sequence with the animated musical bird). I was thrilled to see that District 9 made such a large impact at the box-office. It gives hope to those of us who are tired of seeing nothing but pre-packaged concepts that have been given virtual body-cavity searches by the studios' risk-management trolls. more ›

Movie Review: Up in the Air*

Up in the Air is a comedy-drama directed by Jason Reitman (Thank You for Smoking and Juno.) It is an adaptation of the 2001 novel of the same name, written by Walter Kirn. According to Reitman, “The movie is about the examination of a philosophy -- what if you decided to live hub to hub, with nothing, with nobody?” Well, what if the “you” was George Clooney? In that case, you would be dressed as dapper as could be, wantonly leaving women in your wake as you fly on to your next destination. more ›

Box Office Review: <em>Retreat</em> Advances!

Box Office Review: Retreat Advances!

Despite middling reviews, America warmed up to Couples Retreat this weekend as it easily topped the box office chart with a haul of $35.3M. Last week's champ, Zombieland finished a distant second with $15M ($47.8M) but managed to top the sturdy Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ($12M | $96.2M). The Toy Story 1 & 2 double-feature continued to do good business ($7.6M | $22.6M) while sleeper Paranormal Activity did huge business in its first weekend of wide release ($7M | $8.2M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Damned Couples Education

             + 1 more

I was excited when Couples Retreat first popped on my radar a few months ago. I mean, coupling the Vaughn | Favreau | Billingsley team with Demiurge Jason Bateman seemed like a match made in mainstream comedy heaven, right? Nope. Michael Sheen has quietly become a top-notch, see-everything-he-does actor. I know more about the Bible than I do about soccer, but I'll queue up for The Damned United just to see Sheen. It's already being written: An Education will produce one of the next great stars and that star is Carey Mulligan. more ›

Box Office Review: Meh...

The Labor Day weekend is typically a slow time for the movie business as everyone makes one final attempt to catch some elusive summer magic (e.g. sleep with unattainable lust object). As such, The Final Destination was the best of a weak bunch as it nabbed $12.4M ($47.5M) to top the weekend box office. Terrible newcomer All About Steve finished a reasonably close second ($11.2M) just ahead of the steady Inglourious Basterds ($10.8M | $91M). Gamer disappointed in its debut ($9M) as audiences showed a rare flash of sound judgment. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: New Mike Judge!

             + 8 more

Is it just me or is there a surprising lack of public excitement about the release of Extract? I mean, Mike Judge and Jason Bateman working together on a film? Either one of these guys pulls me into a theater, but both together-- that's nirvana. On the other hand, is anyone looking forward to Gamer? Gerard Butler is rapidly squandering the capital he earned back when he was just a working actor. If you don't know what I mean, watch how great he was in Dear Frankie. Hell, he was even good in Timeline and that movie blew! more ›

DVD Tuesday: Will Smith Sucks

DVD Tuesday: Will Smith Sucks

. Never have. Never will. I mean, don't people realize that it's Kiefer Sutherland up there on the screen. Anyone really scared of facing down Kiefer in a bar fight? Does anyone still think Jon Stewart is funnier than Stephen Colbert? David Lynch's films don't always work for me, but I love that he exists. more ›

Box Office Review: <i>'Cock</i> wins

Box Office Review: 'Cock wins

In a pathetic display of media-generated conformity, audiences rewarded the witless finished a distant third, as Jolie's hot, naked ass only managed to garner $20.6M ($90.7M) in its second frame. more ›

I Guess Jim DeRogatis Won't Be at Amoeba on Friday

I Guess Jim DeRogatis Won't Be at Amoeba on Friday

Although critics have raved about Juno, including myself, I have occasionally heard that it made a few people gag, and I've definitely heard mixed responses to the decidedly twee soundtrack. (I love that word. Twee! ...Not related, sorry.) Chicago Sun-Times critic Jim DeRogatis's rant about both the movie and the soundtrack is already making the blog rounds and iliciting quite a few responses. more ›

Extra, Extra: Sorry, Your Home Does Not Exist.

Extra, Extra: Sorry, Your Home Does Not Exist.

Today in major LA Fire Department events: an early morning structure fire in North Hills sending smoke into the flight path of Van Nuys Airport, a big rig with a trailer overturned on the Southbound Harbor freeway causing a Sig Alert, and a medical emergency in the Hilton Hotel at Universal City where staff mixed ammonia & bleach solutions creating hydrochloric acid (oops!). Is it the second Thursday of the month? Ah, it is!... more ›
