Weekend Movie Guide 03/18: The British Are Coming - To Take Our Aliens!

Hollywood's alien invasion continues, and the British are coming along for the ride! The sci-fi road-trip comedy Paul stars Edgar Wright's favorite funnymen, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost, a CGI alien voiced by Seth Rogen and appearances from every comedian under the sun, including Kristen Wiig, Jane Lynch, Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Joe Lo Truglio, Bill Hader & Blythe Danner. Furthering the film's comedic cred, Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) directs, with Pegg & Frost pulling double duty (quadruple duty?) as writers. more ›

TV Junkie at the 69th Annual Peabody Awards

TV Junkie at the 69th Annual Peabody Awards

We went to the 69th Annual Peabody Awards held at the historic Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York yesterday to see 36 recipients pick up the awards that they were chosen for in 2009. The Peabodys are interesting as they narrow the recipients down to any number of winners from over 1000 submissions - see the complete list of recipients here. The recipients can be in virtually any medium, from the web to film, but we focused on interviewing recipients who had a direct connection with television and were happy to have connected with: more ›

DVD Tuesday: Most Successful Movie Ever?

Following its stunning financial success earlier this year, Paranormal Activity received its required backlash from the cynical (e.g. it wasn't even that scary!). I'd rather focus my attention on the sheer improbability of it all. Folks, this is a film that was made for around $15,000 that went on to gross $107M at the domestic box office. That is an astonishing achievement, both for the filmmakers and the marketing team at Paramount who saw something special where few else did. I say see it! What's a weirder coincidence -- that we would have two films released with the same title in the same year (9, Nine) or that both would come in with high expectations and turn out to be sort of dull? Jennifer's Body should have just been called Megan's Tits. Hey Glee fans -- we get it. You like the show. Modern Family is still much funnier. Accept it. The Swimmer's Nude Massage? WTF? more ›

Box Office Review: America Hates Hitler, Loves Basterds!

Quentin Tarantino roared back into prominence as his World War Two revenge flick, Inglourious Basterds, uh, roared to the top of the weekend box office, earning a way-above expectations $37.2M. Last week's champ, District 9 had a reasonable hold and earned an additional $18.9M ($73.4M). After that it was the sort of okay G.I.Joe ($12.5M | $120.5M), the weepy Time Traveler's Wife ($10M | 37.4M) and the winning Julie & Julia ($9M | $59.2M). Kids commanded the next three slots: the lame Shorts debuted to $6.6M followed by the odd G-Force ($4.2M | $107.3M) and the super Harry Potter 6: Harry Battles Voldemort! ($3.5M | $290.2M) more ›

Movie Review: Julie & Julia

             + 1 more

The genre of "foodie movies" demands that the Los Angelean viewer have an after-movie plan. If you're seeing Tampopo, make haste for Daikokuya. If it's Soul Food, M&M Soul Food better be no farther than 20 minutes away. And now with Julie & Julia... well really, is there any place in Los Angeles where you can find the exquisite French food featured in the movie? Oh sure, there's Kendall's Brasserie or Church & State. But the best thing about Julie & Julia is that you're gonna wanna cook. Maybe not like Julia Child, but you'll be inspired to break out the pots and pans, and maybe even the pen and paper. more ›

LAist at Sundance: Day 2

LAist at Sundance: Day 2

I was planning to hit the Festival Press Office right when they opened at eight to jump into one of their four viewing booths and catch a quick movie on DVD, but fate (or more likely, last night's unusually intense hangover--I blame the altitude) intervened and I didn't get there until just after ten. Luckily, a booth was still open and I was able to snatch a copy of John Krasinki's Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. I settled into my chair, plugged in my cell phone to charge and slipped on my headphones. more ›
