James Cameron's 3-D Mars Cam Nixed by NASA

James Cameron's 3-D Mars Cam Nixed by NASA

Many thought James Cameron was capable of anything, not least of all the director of Avatar himself. But the 3-D imaging technology that transformed Avatar's fairy tale plot into the can't-miss, eye-popping moving experience of 2009 could not be adapted quickly enough for a visit to Mars. more ›

Advanced Screening of James Cameron's Environmental Documentary This Friday at G2 Gallery

Advanced Screening of James Cameron's Environmental Documentary This Friday at G2 Gallery

As we are all painfully well aware, the price of gas has been steadily climbing over the past month. But before you begin ruthlessly advocating more oil mining to save your wallet, educate yourself first. Visit The G2 Gallery in Venice this Friday, March 18, at 7:30pm for a special screening of James Cameron's* environmental documentary, Tipping Point: The Age of the Oil Sands. The gallery's current exhibit, Boreal Future: Our Last Great Forest and the Threat of the Tar Sands, is featured alongside Cameron's documentary and includes still photography by Garth Lenz, an award-winning environmental photojournalist. more ›

Weekend Movie Guide 02/04: College Killers Go Kaboom!

Weekend Movie Guide 02/04: College Killers Go Kaboom!

The Roommate brings back fond memories of freshman year: new friends, independence, wild parties and murderous roommates. The film's perfectly poised for a gimmick release in September - and dumping it this early in the year means Sony can get the DVD/Blu Ray/VOD on shelves in time for homecoming. Kaboom bursts into the Nuart with an even crazier college caper, which may culminate in the end of existence. Written & directed by Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation, Mysterious Skin), the trailer bears his trademarks: highly cynical, highly sexual, lowly polished, and ample doses of hallucinogenics. more ›

LAist Interview: James Cameron and The Cast of Sanctum

Executive Producer James Cameron is the big name attached to the 3D underwater-thriller Sanctum, but watch Rhys Wakefield be the biggest thing to come out of it. The handsome Aussie plays Josh, a 17-year-old kid dragged along by his cave-exploring, inattentive father Frank (Richard Roxburgh) on a dangerous expedition that leaves them and the rest of their team trapped beneath the earth. Unfortunately, part of what makes Rhys stand out are the frustratingly annoying characters with whom he struggles to escape. more ›

Bragging Rights: Vanity Fair Names Top 40 Earners in Hollywood

Bragging Rights: Vanity Fair Names Top 40 Earners in Hollywood

Who brought in the big bucks in the last year in showbiz? Vanity Fair has released their rankings of the Top 40 biggest earners in Hollywood, and Avatar's main man, James Cameron, takes the #1 spot, with $257 million earned in 2010. VF says this list is "limited to creative figures—stars, directors, producers—and to the money they earn from film," mind you, so what's actually in the bank is a whole other issue. Also on the list: Katherine Heigl (#33), Vin Diesel (#29), Owen Wilson (#26), Tyler Perry (#17), Taylor Lautner (#9), and Johnny Depp (#2). Yay, rich people! more ›

Streisand Among New Inductees into California Hall of Fame

"Papa can you hear me? I'm a hall of famer!" In a ceremony held yesterday in Sacramento, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and first lady Maria Shriver presided over the induction of four new famous folk into the California Hall of Fame. Joining the iconic songstress/actor/director in receiving the honor were Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, director James Cameron, and tennis star Serena Williams. "The California Hall of Fame was established in 2006 to honor people who've made their mark on the state's history," explains ABC7. more ›

Box Office Review: Definitely not the The Last Exorcism

Box Office Review: Definitely not the The Last Exorcism

America proved yet again that it is more than happy to reward crappy movies with large box-office hauls. The pointless The Last Exorcism "earned" $21.3M to top the mediocre Takers ($21M) and win the weekend. Recent powerhouse The Expendables slipped to third but still earned a ridiculous $9.5M ($82M). After that it was the lame Eat Pray Love ($7M | $60.7M) and the funny The Other Guys ($6.6M | $99.3M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Not Again!

Well, a special edition of Avatar 3D is back in theaters this weekend to suck out more of your hard-earned money. Frankly, I find the film quickly diminishing with the passage of time. I'd rather spend my money on either Centurion or Mesrine: Killer Instinct. Both feature dynamic, charismatic actors in their primes (e.g. not Sam Worthington). Doesn't it seem like Takers is basically the same movie as Armored? And I think it's more than just the presence of Matt Dillon in both. The Last Exorcism violates the cardinal rule of all horror films: it's rated PG-13. Join with me and promise never to pay money to see a PG-13 horror film again! more ›

DVD Tuesday: Will Avatar suck in 2-D?

3-D televisions are still a technology of the near-future so everyone who buys Avatar will be watching it in good old-fashioned 2-D. Absent the gloriously immersive world created by James Cameron, will audiences be distracted by the obvious plotting and tinny dialogue? Jeff Bridges should have won an Oscar long before getting one for Crazy Heart (The Fisher King anyone?). While his turn as Bad Blake didn't blow me away, it was a solidly professional turn in an otherwise mild movie. A year ago, smart money pegged Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones as a surefire Oscar contender. Nope! We need more movies like 44-Inch Chest. Is Ray Winstone ever not awesome? Don't worry -- Solar Anus Cinema isn't what you think. It's, you know, arty. more ›

Box Office Review: It's Finally Over!

After seven weeks as King of the World, Avatar was knocked from its perch by the maudlin Dear John. The phony love story brought in an obscene $32.4M in its debut weekend to best the Pocahontas rip-off ($23.6M | $630M). From Paris With Love disappointed in its first frame ($8.1M) while Edge of Darkness collapsed in week two ($7M | $29M). The Tooth Fairy -- to America's eternal shame -- is holding up well ($6.5M | $34.3M) more ›

Box Office Review: Seriously?

Box Office Review: Seriously?

Look, Avatar is a fine movie. If I were ranking the best hundred movies of the year, it would certainly find a solid place in the top twenty-five purely based on its technical virtuousity. That said -- why are so many people flocking to the theater to see it? For the seventh God damned weekend in a row, it topped the box office taking in $30M ($594M) to easily bash Mel Gibson's Edge of Darkness which only managed $17.1M in its opening frame. The dreadful, apocalyptic When in Rome managed a mere $12M to top the almost as dreadful The Tooth Fairy ($10M | $26.1M). more ›

Box Office Review: Geez! Avatar Again?

Box Office Review: Geez! Avatar Again?

Avatar continued its long slog towards ultimately topping Titanic by easily winning this weekend's box-office race ($48.5M | $429M). Sherlock Holmes was a very distant second but has proven to be a solid hit for Guy Ritchie ($16.6M | $165.1M). Unfortunately, the same can be said for Dumb Fucking Chipmunk Movie which is still bringing in unfit parents and their bratty kids ($16.3M | $178.1M). Daybreakers was the best performer of the films released this weekend ($15M) while It's Complicated managed to top ($11M | $76.3M) another newbie, the crappy Leap Year ($9.1M). more ›

Box Office Review: Look Out, Titanic!

Box Office Review: Look Out, Titanic!

The mighty Avatar trounced all comers for the third weekend in a row, taking in a huge $68.3M ($352.1M) to easily win the weekend. Sherlock Holmes had a good second week and brought in $38.3M ($140.6M) to squeak by Dumb Fucking Chipmunk Movie ($36.6M | $157.3M). It's Complicated had a strong hold and made another $18.7M ($59.1M) while The Blind Side keeps pancaking the competition ($12.6M | $209M). more ›

Box Office Review: Avatar, Take Two!

For the second week in a row, Avatar blew away the competition to easily capture the box-office crown ($75M | $212.2M). It's presumed challenger, Sherlock Holmes was a distant second ($65.3M) while Dumb Fucking Chipmunk Movie made an obscene amount of money ($50.2M) (presumably, from moronic families trying to keep their bratty kids quiet for a few hours). Adult "comedy" (e.g. not funny) It's Complicated had a decent weekend ($22.1M) while the superb Up in the Air surged in its first weekend of wide release ($11.7M | $24.5M). more ›

Box Office Review: Record-breaker!

James Cameron's Avatar broke 3-D records this weekend as it surged to a strong $73M opening to top the box office. Disney's The Princess and the Frog was a distant second with $12.M ($44.7M) just ahead of the still-strong The Blind Side ($10M | $164.7M). Did You Hear About the Morgans? disappointed in its debut ($7M) as the audience just doesn't appear to be there for Sarah Jessica Parker if she's not playing a vapid, money-grubbing whore. Teenage girls and lonely middle-aged women continue to flock to New Moon ($4.3M | $274.5M) while Afrikaaner ex-patriats are not flocking to Invictus ($4.1M | $15.8M). more ›

Weekend Movie Guide: Will Avatar Be Titanic?

             + 1 more

After months of speculation, audiences will finally be able to see Avatar today. Will it live up to all of the hype? How could it? I expect the usual Cameron film -- rigorously applied and dazzling visuals with a script aimed at those with an 8th grade reading level. I don't care if buzz hasn't been great -- I can't wait to see Nine. Folks, Daniel Day-Lewis is the best actor on the planet! You've got to see this one! Let's hope that a wrong is righted this year and Jeff Bridges is awarded an Oscar for his fantastic work in Crazy Heart. Long, long overdue. Emily Blunt is fast becoming the English Anne Hathaway: a young actress with serious chops who can anchor a film. Young Victoria looks sumptuous. The less said about Did You Hear About the Morgans? the better. Hugh Grant was once a wonderful comedic actor. Once. more ›

Your Weekly LAist Film Calendar

Your Weekly LAist Film Calendar

Every so often, two movies play in theaters that appear so similar, it rips a hole in the cultural zeitgeist. Antz & A Bug's Life. Armageddon & Deep Impact. Capote & Infamous. Back to the Future & Back to the Future. Take your pick; the entire trilogy plays this weekend at both the New Beverly and the Aero. Same Doc-day, same Doc-ticket price. It's probably easier to sneak beverages into the New Bev, but Great Scott - do NOT, under any circumstances, play the Back to the Future drinking game! Trust me on this... more ›

Stan Winston, 1946-2008

Stan Winston, legendary Hollywood special-effects wizard, died this weekend at his home at age 62. He succumbed to multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer, after a 7-year struggle with the disease. Winston created some of the most memorable creatures in modern cinema, including the Terminators, the "Jurassic Park" dinosaurs, and more recently, the character suit for "Iron Man." more ›
