LA Kings defeat Minnesota Wild 5-2. Not only did the Kings have the lead going into the third period, they held the Wild scoreless in that period. The Kings penalty kill was suspect giving the Wild's two scores on four power play opportunities. But overall the Kings limited the Wild's shots holding them to 14 after two periods. And having been outscored 15-4 on their recent losing streak, it was a good sign when the Kings came out to score first on a Kyle Calder wrist shot.

Pittsburgh Pirates defeat LA Dodgers 6-4. The Dodgers were leading 4-3 in the top of the ninth, and I had just finished writing this blurb. Dodger closer Takashi Saito gave up two singles then the Earl Weaver to the Pirates Nate McClouth. This was a rough loss despite a good outing by Hiroki Kuroda who gave up three runs on six innings. Andruw Jones hit a triple and look to resemble the hitter we thought he was going to be. And of course there was Vin Scully butchering Pirates first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz's name.

Today marks Jackie Robinson's 89th birthday, and the Dodgers are celebrating it by educating the youngins.

  • Wrapping up their Greatest Dead Angelenos series, blogging.la announces the last three: #3, Raymond Chandler; #2, William Mulholland; #1, Jackie Robinson.

  • While all the cheesy babybooming douches like Costas and McCarver harken back endlessly about the good ole days of the Boys of Summer before they left NY and moved to LA, keep in mind one thing - people in Brooklyn don't miss the Dodgers. They might miss Vin Scully, or decent National League baseball, but miss or care about the Bums? Faggitaboutit. "When Pee Wee Reese died," said Marty Adler, who has spent years...

Ducks 2, Canucks 1, 2OT - The Ducks won the series in five games but it felt more like six. Vancouver pushed Anaheim to overtime in three of the games, two of those going into double OT. The final game featured a jaw dropping 63 shots by the Ducks, who only faced 27 in return. Roberto Luongo had 56 saves for Vancouver for a 96.6% save percentage. Five shots were blocked by Dany Sabourin who...

The night before tens of thousands at Chavez Ravine celebrated the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier, a few miles west, in Hollywood, an African-American star on one of the most popular tv shows in the nation was being denied entrance into a new club.

One of our favorite LA photographers, Malingering, went to the Dodger game last night. She has a great eye for both fashion and sports. We wonder if she would ever be an LAist contributer? Hmmmm. One can dream.

Apparently not only is Jared Leto a wannabe rocker, but he is also a wannabe lover - according to Penthouse gal Krista Ayne (pictured, right), Leto's skills are lacking, and he's too busy with his makeup to call a girl back - Page Six India attacks Richard Gere! Dodgers 9, Padres 3 - If there was ever a day the Dodgers were supposed to win, it was Sunday. The Boys in Blue delivered on Jackie Robinson Day, honoring one of our nation's heroes with five stolen bases, thirteen hits, and nine runs. On the 60th anniversary of Robinson breaking the color barrier, the entire Dodgers team wore #42. In fact, over 200 players and managers throughout the country donned Jackie's old number. The...

LAist was doing some upgrading Sunday morning and afternoon so we couldn't do all the posts that we wanted to do. But we are glad that everything is working well enough for us to post this little slideshow featuring the song by Count Basie. We in LA were very lucky to be so tied to Jackie's memory today and we hope his inspiration stays with us for more than just a few days. video...

A week after LAist judged Angel outfielder Garret Anderson for refusing to wear Jackie Robinson's number on Jackie Robinson Day, it appears that the All-Star is agreeing with us.

It's easy to talk about breaking the color line like it was no big deal. Like it was anything imaginable to what the pampered players of today experience. Like it was something we could even conceive. The truth was the MLB owners unanimously voted against Jackie being allowed to play and even his fellow Dodgers signed a petition to stop blacks from playing baseball. Imagine what it would be like to go to work...

Some might call it acting in lock-step, some might call it a grand and fitting tribute to an American hero. Today the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that every one of their players will don Jackie Robinson's number 42 on their jerseys on Sunday, the 60th anniversary of the day Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball. In an unprecedented move, the number was retired from all MLB teams ten years ago, only being...

Anaheim Angels manager, and former Dodger, Mike Scioscia tried to defend his suddenly-controversial outfielder Garret Anderson, who last week told officials that he would not be wearing Jackie Robinson's number this Sunday to celebrate Robinson breaking the color barrier in baseball. Anderson originally gave two excuses for dissing the dead Dodger by refusing to wear his number, 1) he said he wasn't going to do it because it was Ken Griffey Jr.'s idea and...

I’ve been thinking about the blog Tony Pierce posted a few days ago which was titled “Garret Anderson Doesn’t Care About Black People,” and although I didn’t initially want to respond to it, I feel that it’s necessary for me to do so. Let me start out by saying that I’ve received a handful comments on my posts that have basically implied that I don’t know what I’m talking about when I’ve expressed my opinions on the Angels, and I don’t respond to them for two reasons. The first is that I don’t see the point in getting into a pissing contest with people I’ve never even met before. The second reason I don’t respond is because I respect a person’s right to their opinion, and even if I don’t agree with them, I don’t think it’s my job to slam them for expressing it. With all that being said, I absolutely respect Tony’s opinion and he has a right to it, but when somebody writes what he wrote about a guy who I feel didn’t deserve to get thrown under a bus, I’ve gotta respond to it.

We don't know about where you are, but it seems like spring can't decide whether or not to happen. Some days are warm, some days are cold, and sometimes you aren't sure which. Baseball may have started up (and soccer/football winding down) but it still seems cold out there. Unless it's not. Anyways, onto the -ists.

To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the day Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier, all 25 Dodger players will don the Hall of Famer's number on the back of their uniform on April 15th, a stunning tribute that will charm everyone except the official scorer.

Today was D-Day in the long and storied public life of Tommy Lasorda. Today was the day he promised that he would sue Jody "Babydol" Gibson, the convicted Hollywood Madam, if she went through with publishing her tell-all book where she had a full chapter about the former Dodger great, as well as many other chapters containing the sexual details of other famous Hollywood movers and shakers. "I have never heard of this woman...

Well at least the weather was good. The Dodgers, as well as Major League Baseball celebrated Jackie Robinson Day Saturday April 15th. The Blue Crew looked to improve their record against arch rival San Francisco Giants but found themselves falling short and wondering what happened. It was an eventful and dare we say, entertaining series if not a successful one. The Dodgers dropped 2 of 3 to the Giants and fell below .500 (6-7) with a sad 2-4 record at home. Jackie Robinson Day itself was a success as the Odalis Perez pitched seven strong innings to get a 3-1 victory over Giants ace Jason Schmidt in front of over 53,000 in attendance. The other two games however found the Dodgers searching for their hitting stroke as well as for answers. They managed only 4 runs in 3 games as opposed to the offensive explosion against the Pirates in their previous series which featured a 13 run game on Thursday. Also noted in the games was the absent bat of one Barry Bonds. The San Francisco slugger failed to hit his first homerun of the season against LA and that is something that LAist can take solace in.
