Anaheim Seeks Permanent Ban on Red Light Cameras
To Anaheim, it doesn't matter if red light cameras are potential cash cows or costly enterprises; they don't want them in their city, period. Last night the Anaheim City Council "expressed support for an city charter amendment that would ban the" cameras that click a picture then ticket motorists who allegedly run the intersection's red light, according to LA Now. Anaheim's mayor, Curt Pringle, said of the cameras and tickets: "It's very discouraging when government thinks its sole purpose is ... to use public safety as a revenue-raising tool." Voters will likely be casting their ballots on the issue in November.
Officials Considering Doubling Number of Red Light Cameras
The city could soon be bringing in more much-needed revenue if they follow through on discussions to expand the current red light camera program, according to the LA Times. Over the next few months LA's motorists could see cameras added to "blocks of eight intersections at a time and eventually doubling the overall reach of the program to 64 intersections."
Do Red Light Cameras Make Intersections More Dangerous?
The City says no, that intersections with red light cameras are not more dangerous with them, pointing out that red light runner crashes are down. That may be true, but an investigative report by CBS2 finds that accidents are up at most of the red-light camera intersections if you include crashes caused by people stopping earlier than expected to avoid running a red light.
Street Improvements for Hollywood & Melrose Hill
As one of the most heavily traveled pedestrian and automobile intersections in the city, Santa Monica and Western is thought to be a dangerous one. That's why today some new features were unveiled thanks to a $300,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration secured by Rep. Becerra with the help of Councilman Garcetti, who represents the 13th District, which includes Hollywood and Melrose Hill where the intersection splits the two neighborhoods among others.
