K.I.S.S.: Simplicity the Secret of In-N-Out's Success?

For many of us on the West Coast, we take our In-N-Out seriously. We know we love it, we know how to order off the (not-so-secret?) secret menu, we know our own favorite order. You don't have to have a reservation, or be a celeb to get the best of the best from them (although not too long ago actor Tom Hanks told the newly (re)arrived Conan O'Brien he thinks their catering truck beats the Batmobile). But--besides their sauce--what's their actual secret?

Kogi-schmogi! "One of the true great things about Los Angeles is In-N-Out Burger," endorsed Tom Hanks, when asked for tips to help the Tonight Show's Conan O'Brien acclimate to his surroundings (although this isn't O'Brien's first time as an Angeleno).

JetBlue CEO and LGB Director Bond Over Burgers, While Long Beach City Gov't Bashes Bloggers

It all started with a blogger: Last week news broke that budget airline JetBlue was thinking of pulling out of Long Beach Airport (LGB) after their CEO said as much to the blogger behind Crankyflier.com. Although formal meetings are on the books for LGB's Director, Mario Rodriguez, and JetBlue CEO Dave Barger back east later this month, the pair wound up having an impromptu lunch at In-N-Out Burger on Thursday.

In-N-Out would like to catch you before you turn that ten dollar bill into a roll of quarters and roll yourself over to one of their SoCal locations on their upcoming anniversary. Rumors that the popular fast food chain are offering up their classic burgers for 25 cents as part of a 60th anniversary special are false. The word from In-N-Out: "The rumor is not true." Although a burger for a quarter sounds like a great idea, considering the economy that sort of promotion might just evoke too much of "bread line" sentiment. Just look at the scene a few days ago at Phillipe's when they offered their signature sandwich for pennies on the dollar!

Nancy Luna of the OC Register's fantastic food blog, Fast Food Maven (it's more than just fast food), took a field trip out of Orange County to the East Coast last year and while there, visited Five Guys Burgers to taste test the talked-about nosh that many compare to In-N-Out. However, her findings led her to say that they are actually more comparable to The Counter.

After the Humane Soceity of the United States released a video (seen below) of abused cows at a Chino slaughterhouse, the U.S. Department of Agriculture began an investigation on Wednesday. With a quick response, The California Department of Education Nutrition Services Division urged all public schools to check where their cafeteria meat was coming from and two fast food chains cut their ties with the Chino based Westland/Hallmark Meat Company.

The president of In-N-Out Burger, Mark Taylor, said Thursday his company decided to stop buying beef from the company after learning of the video.

With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to.

While most Angelenos will urge their visitors to try a meal at In N' Out (the best to capture that classic sunshiney L.A. drive-through burger experience), they often forget about the other local fast-food burger phenomenon: Fatburger. Both establishments boast excellent burgers and a fool-proof menu, but there are some major (and delicious) differences that make it almost impossible to decide which is better (kind of like the Pink's versus Skooby's debate -- but...

Audrey Kitching is a model, Internet personality, and phenomenon. Next month you will see her in issues of Alternative Press, Vice magazine and Misbehave. Currently she's on tour with the Warped Tour driving in an Audrey Kitching/Buzznet.com car that’s pink and green leopard print and writing about it on her Buzznet journal.

Loyal LAist reader Evan Price caught this photo of a water main of some sort (we hope that's water) shooting out of the In-N-Out over by Universal City near the Vivid building today around 1:30pm. This is where a lesser blog would make some sort of childish sexual innuendo about liquids gushing in the vicinity of the world's largest porn company, working in a punchline of "Now that's what we call Animal Style", but...

I’m not picky when it comes to most street foods. Being a happy New York-to-Los Angeles transplant, I’ve learned not to stress over our lack of a Papaya King or a Grimaldi’s. Instead, I simply bask in the fast food glory of LA stalwarts like In-N-Out and Mashti Malone’s. Philly cheesesteaks are the exception. Ever since my first weekend trip down to Philadelphia to grab a cheesesteak “wid” (with onions) from Pat’s, I noticed that what other cities pass off as “cheesesteaks” are in fact slurry sandwiches composed of equal parts Steak-Um grade meat and lousy cheese.

Sometimes LA is like a bad romantic comedy. You know the one, where the fiance comes to meet the weird-ass parents and the protagonist tries, unsuccessfully, to hide just how crazy they are. (see “The Birdcage”, “Meet The Fockers”, et al). I live a quiet, unassuming writer’s life here. Yet whenever friends from out of town travel through, despite my assurances that I live a perfectly normal life in our sunny, smoggy city, LA seems to go out of its way to roll out an assembly line of “only in LA” clichés the moment they step off the plane. Only when out of town guests are here does that 80s hair rocker with the Skid Row t-shirt come stumbling, stoned, into In-N-Out at 11pm. Every Angelyne sighting I’ve ever had has been while in the company of an out-of-town guest.

If you're bummed out today, you're not alone. If you're pissed, despondent, low, blue, mournful, depressed, dejected, or "in the bell jar", take solace. If you feel gloomy or downcast or spiritless or mopey or dopey or down, there's good reasons to frown, Christmas is super far away, our New Year's resolutions have probably already gone to shit, the weather sucks, and it's time for us to start thinking about bills and taxes, This...

Lakers 132, Kings 128, OT - Even though Sacramento came into the game a .500 team, this Norcal/Socal rivalry produced another exciting game. The Lakers held a commanding 21 point lead, but fell apart and needed last second shot by Smush Parker to send it into overtime. Despite going scoreless for the first 16 minutes, Kobe had 42 points, 5 of which came on free throws towards the end of the extra period. Both teams...

Despite the fact that McDonald's has tried to palm off salads, wraps, grilled chicken, and other healthier options to its hamburger-based mainstay, Angus burgers have made their way onto the menu at a half-dozen area Mickey D's. And we're just not talking one Angus burger that can be found in several McDonald's restaurant, like one found in South Pasadena, but three different burgers: Regular, Mushroom & Cheese, and Deluxe. Clearly feeling the heat from...

From the most recent Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association letter: Hamburger Hamlet: As previously reported, the owner of ths Hambuger Hamlet building is seeking to sell a major portion of the parking lot to a developer for a condominium project. Because of a dispute with the owner of the remainder of the parking lot, the owner recently fenced off a portion of the parking lot creating chaos for customers and visitors. At a recent meeting...

The word is Six Flags Magic Mountain is for sale and although they're trying to sell the place as one huge lot, they're willing to break it up into smaller lots. With all the wealth and riches in this town, you'd think that thered be someone up in this piece who has all his rides pimped, all his cribs crunked, and all of his bitches sweet-sixteened and seriously wants to have an amusement park...

Every month, LAist ges together and has drinks. Lately, we've hit Atwater Village (The Roost), Los Feliz (Good Luck Bar), Hollywood (The Well) and West L.A. (Don Antonio's). Sometime next month, we will hit The Chimney Sweep in Sherman Oaks. It began last night at the W Hotel's Whiskey Blue with Gothamist, LLC head honcho Jake Dobkin. After many laughs and drinks, we got hungry. Too bad Noodle Planet was already closed. In-N-Out it...

On Friday, the world lost one of its culinary giants: Esther Snyder, 86, matriarch of In-N-Out. Back in 1948, she and husband Harry founded their first – and California’s first – drive-thru hamburger stand in Baldwin Park, off the 10 freeway. The Snyders expanded their operations slowly to Arizona and Nevada, and we’re happy they did. How much longer would that long drive back from Vegas on Sundays be without stopping at the In-N-Out...

Co-founder of In-N-Out Burger, Esther Snyder, has passed. We salute you with 4x4s and Grilled Cheeses.

Now, truth be told, as far as local fast food burgers go, this -ister would much rather go to fatburger than In-N-Out (considering the constant line of cars at In-N-Out, you're not really "in" and "out" all that quickly anymore) so we don't have much cause to peruse the chain's website on a regularly basis. So, really we have no idea how long the secret menu has been hiding in plain sight right there. We'd just like to point out that if you feature the 4x4 and Animal Style options on your website, you can't really call them secret anymore.

Hmmm, what better day to start what will probably become our weekly look around the local blog soap operas than the morning after The Huffington Post/Yahoo!/Gawker Media love fest that was billed as a night celebrating Defamer's Mark Lisanti but really was to celebrate and launch the syndication agreements between the three parties. While we generally hovered next to the go fug girls, the Mister Zero you don't want to !@$* with, Defamer's Employee of the Month and Marissa of Terra Non Firma, we did spend a little time with the boys of Martini Republic and several Yahoo! content kids who are transitioning from the bay area to the West side and were very serious about getting some In-N-Out burgers before heading back to the Viceroy for the after party.

We couldn’t help but notice mention of a couple local Cali institutions in Jane Levere’s NY Times piece about the remarkably unsophisticated daytime food tastes of contemporary culinary luminaries. Turns out famed New York-based chef Daniel Boulud recently visited the Apple Pan, while French Laundry and Per Se super star chef Thomas Keller relishes the In-N-Out burger—fries—shake—trifecta.

She hits all the usual suspects like Original Tommy Burgers,The Apple Pan, Fatburger and In-N-Out, but, surprisingly, fails to look in on Astro Burgers. Guess, it's too vegetarian for the list.

On Friday, November 12, 2004, Los Angeles Times food writer and author Russ Parsons interviewed superchef Thomas Keller, owner of The French Laundry and Bouchon restaurants, as a supplement at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's latest art exhibit "From Renoir to Matisse: The Eye of Duncan Phillips."

For starters, the 2005 Zagat reveals some interesting trends. Angelenos eat out more frequently than the average American. We forgo home cooking on average of 3.8 times a week in contrast to the average habit of eating out 3.3 times. Despite the increased hike in the cost of living in LA, we shell out an average $30.17 per meal, a mere 56 cents more than last year. It's still below the $30.95 you'll spend on average in any given American city, and considerably less than the mean cost of a meal in New York City ($37.06). We also contain more top-rated Asian restaurants than any other city in the U.S.
