Free Healthcare in Inglewood Prompts Extra Bus Service

The free healthcare check program at The Forum in Inglewood that will go through next week has been so popular, Metro is temporarily extending a bus line's service to 24 hours. Thousands turned out in the first two days of the week long event that is offering free health, dental and vision checks to the uninsured, under-insured, unemployed and under-employed. Hundreds spent the night hoping to get checked today. Remote Area Medical Foundation will be offering services through next Tuesday. Due to "overwhelming demand," Metro Bus Line 115, which usually runs from 5 a.m. to midnight will now run 24 hours a day with service every half hour during the off-hours. Good Timing? Remote Area Medical tends to serve rural areas, but placing a clinic in the 2nd largest U.S. city during the national healthcare debate is an interesting move, coincidental or not.

Free Medical Checks for the Uninsured and Under-Insured

Hundreds lined up at the Inglewood Forum early this morning for free medical, dental and vision care not just for the uninsured and under-insured, but the unemployed and under-employed, too. Remote Area Medical, a volunteer based organization that recruits professional doctors, will be here today through August 18th beginning at 5:30 a.m. daily. Only 1,200 people a day will be scheduled for appointments, according to the LA Times, which noted people began showing before 3 a.m. this morning. A variety of services will be offered including PAP smears, x-rays and Mammography.

Hard Summer was supposed to go all night at the Forum in Inglewood last night, and the sold out event had the venue packed (it seats 18,000). But for some reason, before things could even get too intense, the event was shut down by authorities. LA Times' music blog Pop & Hiss explains:

Saturday's all-night electronic event Hard Summer at the Forum was shut down by midnight. The event was declared a "hazard" by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, according to an Inglewood police representative. Based on the county department's recommendation, Hard Summer was called off. [...]

Yesterday was officially National Doughnut (or Donut) Day, but there's no reason to not carry the spirit of celebration over to your weekend, which is why today we're looking at the story behind one of our city's most well known structures.

Justice Department Investigating Inglewood Police Department

Five of the 11 people that Inglewood Police have shot and killed since 2003 were unarmed. "They include a man who fled when officers tried to stop him for riding his bicycle on a sidewalk," the LA Times reported. "An officer said he fired when the man reached for a bulge near his waist, which turned out to be a rolled-up T-shirt." The Justice Department's investigation, which will look into "procedures and tactics used by Inglewood police officers involving use of force," is the third, following one by the state attorney general and L.A. Sheriff's Office of Independent Review. Two officers were given the sobriquet, "taser twins," after tasering four unarmed people in five weeks. One of those was tasered on his genitals.

Dad Shoots 4-Year-Old Son in Apparent Murder-Suicide

27-year-old Sharome Frazier's son is still alive on life-support at UCLA-Harbor Hospital after apparently shooting him early this morning in Inglewood. Frazier died of what looks like a self-inflicted wound after police were called to his house for what appeared to be an attempted suicide, but a motive is still unclear at this point. Anyone with information about the incident, call (310) 412-5246, or (888) 41-CRIME, CBS2 says.

2008 is the 70th anniversary of Hollywood Park, a once grand-dame in the world of horse racing that may meet the fate of the bulldozer come next year. With racing not the draw it once was, the stands are often sparsely populated, and its home city of Inglewood has their eye on a more lucrative prize.

As part of their annual neighborhood and community concert series, the LA Philharmonic will be visiting Van Nuys, Inglewood and Pomona next month. It's all about their goal of making "music accessible to the widest possible audience." To that end, the three concerts are free (well, the Pomona show is an easy $5) and will feature Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on “Greensleeves,” Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Suite No. 1. To get in, you must reserve a spot. Also: The orchestra released a live concert recording for purchase on iTunes today. The concert from the Shadow of Stalin series features works from Shostakovich and Mosolov.

The Inglewood Police are keeping silent about their city council's revelation yesterday that an August 31 incident involving officers fatally shooting a homeless man was recorded on tape and in the hands of the City. According to cbs2.com, the council released a written statement regarding the video, which allegedly shows "seven officers [who] fired a combined 47 times" at "a homeless man carrying a toy gun."

Since May, officer involved shootings in Inglewood have left four people dead. The latest was Sunday afternoon when police were called to a report of a homeless man with a gun, which ended up being a replica silver handgun, according to the LA Times.

One innocent person dead at the hands of an officer is bad enough. Now there could be two. 5-year veteran of the Inglewood Police Department Brian Ragan is on leave for the second time in 10 weeks after he shot and killed a man who allegedly was pointing a gun at him. Ragan was responding to a family disturbance call, knocked on the door and, according to police, Kevin Wicks, a postal worker was holding a gun and pointed it at officers after he answered the door. By all accounts, neighbors say Wicks was a "quiet tenant" and that officers did not clearly identify themselves. Residents are now calling for a federal probe.

It's good to solve a cold case and what makes this one easier to deal with is the fact that the accused criminal is already in jail. From the LAPD: "The Robbery-Homicide Division’s (RHD) Detectives, obtained a warrant for the arrest of Michael Hubert Hughes, 51-years-old, charging four counts of murder with additional charges relating to sexual assault of the four female victims. The series of crimes occurred between 1986 and 1993. Three occurred in the City of Los Angeles and one in the City of Inglewood. RHD detectives investigating the murders determined that Hughes who is serving a life sentence in a California State Prison for similar murder convictions was responsible for the additional four cases charged today."

Early Tuesday morning, California Highway Patrol officers made a routine traffic stop that ended with deadly results. Around 12:15 a.m., officers stopped a gold Mercedes near 7th Street at South Westmoreland when the driver exited the vehicle per instructions given. But as the man got out, he allegedly produced a hand gun, prompting officers to shoot him more than once "in self defense," ultimately killing him.

Morning headlines today have not been an exemplary one for public safety, both accident and crime-wise. The big ticket item was the eastbound 10 Freeway being closed in Covina after a 4:45 a.m. accident between a van and motorcycle that left the two-wheeler dead. All lanes were closed and one was reported open at 7 a.m. Also in Norwalk, a five-car crash caused three soundbound lanes on the 605 to be closed shortly before 8 a.m. There were several injuries, but none warranting transport to the hospital.
