Juan Manuel Diaz, 36, of Santa Ana and his passenger were shot around 9 p.m. last night at the intersection of Grand and Edinger Avenues, according to the Daily Breeze. His van careened into wrong-way traffic and he slammed into a Volkswagen Beetle carrying a family with two adults and three children, ages 5, 8 and 13.

Murder-Suicide at Inglewood Optometry Office
A man and woman are dead after a murder-suicide at an optometrist's office in Inglewood this afternoon, reports the Contra Costa Times. The man, whose name hasn't been released, allegedly walked up to the woman inside the Inglewood Optometric Center at about 11:00 a.m. this morning, pulled out a gun and shot her.

Inglewood Cops Still Don't Have Clear Motive, Suspects in Cali Swag Member M-Bone's Shooting
Police in Inglewood are working to determine who fatally shot Cali Swag rapper Mante "M-Bone" Talbert Sunday night, but as of yet have no motive or suspects, even after speaking with multiple witnesses. Authorities, however, have been able to get "a description of the car that was involved," in the drive-by shooting, according to L.A. Now.
Fires Break Out in Catalina, Tujunga Canyon and Inglewood
Firefighters are battling a blaze on Catalina Island, after successfully putting out brush fires in Tujunga Canyon and Inglewood. LA Now reports that the fire, which is threatening buildings at the Catalina Yacht Club, is being fought with water drops from helicopters, and that additional firefighters are being sent to the area (LA Now reports that 100 firefighters are on their way; KNBC estimates the number at 65).
Man Shot in Face Drives Himself to Meet Paramedics
The victim of what was likely a gang-related shooting last night in South Los Angeles managed to drive himself several blocks with a wound in the face, according to the Daily Breeze. The man, whose identity has not been released, drove his vehicle to the border of Inglewood, where he met paramedics and the police. He was then treated for "injuries that were not considered life- threatening" at an area hospital. The LAPD's 77th Street Station is handling the case.
The Beacon Arts Building Premieres with 'Ghost Stories: Happenings, Hauntings, and Curiosities'
Last Thursday was the grand opening of Beacon Arts, a new art space in Inglewood. Dubbing itself an "arts laboratory", it will be featuring contemporary innovative and interactive exhibits. Renée Fox "develops and directs" the events and exhibits at the newly christened art space. Beacon Arts premiered with "Ghost Stories: Happenings, Hauntings, & Curiosities." The exhibit will run through Sunday, November 7, 2010.

Friends, relatives, and members of the community gathered in Inglewood last night to hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Mitrice Richardson, the CSU Fullerton student whose remains were found on August 9th in Malibu Canyon, reports the LA Times.
Rep. Maxine Waters Will Face Ethics Violation Charges
US Rep. Maxine Waters (D-35th District) will likely face an accusation "of at least one ethics violation in her efforts to help a bank with ties to her husband," according to LA Now. Waters was made aware of the allegations on Friday, and has told an anonymous source that she "plans to fight the charges in a House trial." The charges against Waters, who serves a swath of Los Angeles that includes Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale, and Gardena, will be made public on Monday by the Office of Congressional Ethics, which has passed their independent findings to the House Ethics Committee, which, in turn, "turned the matter over to a panel of [...] lawmakers who have been conducting their own probe for months."

the Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation's monthly free tours program. Built in 1949 and designed by architect S. Charles Lee, the beautiful theatre has fallen into crumbles over the years and is currently on the auction block. Preservationists want it saved and the city of Inglewood is working on a bid.

Free Healthcare in Inglewood Prompts Extra Bus Service
The free healthcare check program at The Forum in Inglewood that will go through next week has been so popular, Metro is temporarily extending a bus line's service to 24 hours. Thousands turned out in the first two days of the week long event that is offering free health, dental and vision checks to the uninsured, under-insured, unemployed and under-employed. Hundreds spent the night hoping to get checked today. Remote Area Medical Foundation will be offering services through next Tuesday. Due to "overwhelming demand," Metro Bus Line 115, which usually runs from 5 a.m. to midnight will now run 24 hours a day with service every half hour during the off-hours. Good Timing? Remote Area Medical tends to serve rural areas, but placing a clinic in the 2nd largest U.S. city during the national healthcare debate is an interesting move, coincidental or not.
Free Medical Checks for the Uninsured and Under-Insured
Hundreds lined up at the Inglewood Forum early this morning for free medical, dental and vision care not just for the uninsured and under-insured, but the unemployed and under-employed, too. Remote Area Medical, a volunteer based organization that recruits professional doctors, will be here today through August 18th beginning at 5:30 a.m. daily. Only 1,200 people a day will be scheduled for appointments, according to the LA Times, which noted people began showing before 3 a.m. this morning. A variety of services will be offered including PAP smears, x-rays and Mammography.
Riot Police Shut Down Hard Summer Music Fest at Forum Last Night
Hard Summer was supposed to go all night at the Forum in Inglewood last night, and the sold out event had the venue packed (it seats 18,000). But for some reason, before things could even get too intense, the event was shut down by authorities. LA Times' music blog Pop & Hiss explains:

Justice Department Investigating Inglewood Police Department
Five of the 11 people that Inglewood Police have shot and killed since 2003 were unarmed. "They include a man who fled when officers tried to stop him for riding his bicycle on a sidewalk," the LA Times reported. "An officer said he fired when the man reached for a bulge near his waist, which turned out to be a rolled-up T-shirt." The Justice Department's investigation, which will look into "procedures and tactics used by Inglewood police officers involving use of force," is the third, following one by the state attorney general and L.A. Sheriff's Office of Independent Review. Two officers were given the sobriquet, "taser twins," after tasering four unarmed people in five weeks. One of those was tasered on his genitals.
Dad Shoots 4-Year-Old Son in Apparent Murder-Suicide
27-year-old Sharome Frazier's son is still alive on life-support at UCLA-Harbor Hospital after apparently shooting him early this morning in Inglewood. Frazier died of what looks like a self-inflicted wound after police were called to his house for what appeared to be an attempted suicide, but a motive is still unclear at this point. The LA Phil to Play Free Neighborhood Concerts
As part of their annual neighborhood and community concert series, the LA Philharmonic will be visiting Van Nuys, Inglewood and Pomona next month. It's all about their goal of making "music accessible to the widest possible audience." To that end, the three concerts are free (well, the Pomona show is an easy $5) and will feature Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on “Greensleeves,” Mozart’s Exsultate, jubilate and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Suite No. 1. The concert from the Shadow of Stalin series features works from Shostakovich and Mosolov.
Caught on Tape (Times Two)
The Inglewood Police are keeping silent about their city council's revelation yesterday that an August 31 incident involving officers fatally shooting a homeless man was recorded on tape and in the hands of the City. According to cbs2.com, the council released a written statement regarding the video, which allegedly shows "seven officers [who] fired a combined 47 times" at "a homeless man carrying a toy gun."

Since May, officer involved shootings in Inglewood have left four people dead. The latest was Sunday afternoon when police were called to a report of a homeless man with a gun, which ended up being a replica silver handgun, according to the LA Times.
