Did your family ever take you to see The Ice Capades when you were a kid? Well, if you were a kid and/or exhibition skating fan in 1968, this commercial, shot in Los Angeles, may have scared the crap out of you instead of compelled you to take in an ice show.

Time to Lace Up: 5 Outdoor Ice Skating Rinks in Los Angeles
We can now officially complain about how cold it is in Los Angeles, and with the holidays coming up, it's time to get into the spirit of what passes for autumn and winter around here. Your local big box superstore may already be over-reaching with Christmas decorations, but when it comes to good old fashioned fun, the most important season is upon us: Ice skating!
Too Hot? Get Ready to Chill Out on Local Outdoor Ice Rinks
It might be in the 90s, but it's already the time of year to think about donning some skates and hitting the ice at the seasonal outdoor rinks poised to open around town.
Free Skating at Pershing Square Tomorrow Morning
If you're free tomorrow morning and want to try something fun for free, check out KTLA's "Free Ice Skating Party to Kick Off The Holidays" which happens 7-11 tomorrow morning at the Downtown on Ice rink at Pershing Square, according to Blogdowntown. "The station's Morning News will be doing a live show from the Downtown park," so you'll have a chance to fall on your rear on the local morning show.
Ice Rink in Santa Monica to Open Tonight
It's time to get into the winter spirit. Beginning this afternoon, an 8,000 square foot outdoor ice rink will open to the public in Santa Monica with the unveiling of a 45-foot ice sculpture in promotion of the Blu-ray disc and DVD release of Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Supposedly, the 133,000-pound sculpture of the character Scrat will break the Guinness World Record for Tallest Ice Sculpture.
LAistory: Tropical Ice Gardens
Every winter, many Angelenos get excited by the novelty of heading downtown to Pershing Square and lacing up their ice skates and gliding along (or falling down on) the rink set up during the holiday season. If you spend enough time in Los Angeles eventually you'll hear someone say their weekend plans include "going to the snow," as if cold weather was a destination. And though we may crank up our heat on some chilly wintry nights, we still wear flip flops on our feet with scarves around our necks around here. So it's actually quite fitting to know that once upon a time, when UCLA's roots were barely sinking into the grounds of a blossoming area called Westwood, there was an outdoor skating rink open year-round for pros and amateurs alike.
Get Out: Things to do on Christmas Day
It's Christmas and hey, not everything is closed. So here are some options of what you can do today...
Bowled Over
You saw that right, except for the date: It's Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl IV, airing all day Super Bowl Sunday. Not only is this a fun idea on their part (why subject your shows to poor overall ratings?), it's mesmerisingly watchable and a great way to keep the kids and pets occupied and away from your guests and food. Or maybe you're not (gasp) a football fan and just want to veg out? I wouldn't be surprised if Puppy Bowl had their own, Teletubby-like following among the tripping set. And yes, there is a "Kitty Halftime Show."
Favorite Things To Do in L.A. When It's Cold Out
1. Go to the beach, all bundled up, and see how beautiful the water is when it's gray and white.
Calling all Michelle Kwans and Brian Boitanos Out There!
Why aren't you ice skating this weekend?
Extra, Extra: Go Ice Skating Downtown!
ExperienceLA.com and Lonely Planet are running a community based Downtown photo contest. If you win, you're photo will be on the cover of the free guide that will distributed around LA and all over the world. And while you're Downtown shooting photos, drop by Pershing Square to go ice skating through the holidays. The tunnel on the 5 Freeway where a fiery crash killed three, shutting down the tunnel for over a month, reopened...
Tonight in Rock in LA - The Bronx, Great Northern, Rocket
The Key Club gets top billing tonight because The Bronx headlines a benefit for Wheels for Humanity, which supplies wheelchairs. Also on the bill : Chuck Ragan (ex-Hot Water Music) with members of Flogging Molly, and some rock star karaoke. Everyone will probably be there for either the ice skating or Great Northern, but The Submarines came out with a haunting CD that we played all summer long. Go downtown and ice skate from...
Pershing Square On Ice
Pershing Square has once again transformed into a frozen wonderland of twisted ankles and bruised tailbones. This lovely, downtown park spends most of the year as a grassy knoll and concrete potty, but for a few brilliant weeks during the deep freeze of our LA winter, it becomes a glorious, outdoor ice skating rink for the entire city to enjoy. Hockey clinics, open-air movies, community and family events and live music make this a...
The Start of the Christmahanukwanzaa Season
Yes, we know it's not even Thanksgiving yet and it's a little difficult to feel holiday cheer in the sweltering 80-degree weather, but Christmas has already begun in the mind of retailers across Los Angeles. In our family the Christmas season always 'officially' started the day after Thanksgiving, when we would put up the lights on the outside of the house. The Grove, however, has dictated the start of the season as tomorrow, November...
