The weekend left five dead in separate shootings, but one in particular caught the attention of civil rights leaders in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South LA. 17 year-old Brandon Jamal Perry was shot in the face after an occupant stepped out of a vehicle with a rifle and began shooting at him and others standing in front of a house late Saturday night. Three others were injured, but Perry died at the hospital.

Los Angeles started the weekend without any killings on Friday. Then came Saturday and Sunday which left five dead, four within a 12-hour period. It first started on Saturday morning around 6 a.m. when 35-year-old Ching Tseng was walking on the 3300 block of West 6th Street, a couple blocks from Wilshire and Vermont. He was approached by a male Hispanic, approximately 25 years of age, who demanded Tseng’s money and vehicle, then shot Tseng and fled to a waiting car with three additional suspects, two males and one female, says the LAPD. Tseng later died at the hospital.

It was about 10:35 a.m. yesterday when Jeremy Burrell was approached by several male black suspects while walking on a sidewalk in the Hyde Park neighborhood in South LA. "More than one suspect drew a handgun and began firing at Burrell," said the LAPD. "Burrell was hit multiple times and transported to a local hospital for treatment. He was pronounced dead a short time later." The suspects got away in a van and police are calling it a gang-related shooting. Detectives are asking for anyone with information about this incident, which took place on the 3400 block of West 63rd Street, to call the detectives at (213) 485-1383. In all, eight people died and as many as 28 people injured on Los Angeles roads Memorial Day, as reported by the Los Angeles Fire Department. Two incidents occurred in the Hollywood area and two others in South Los Angeles.

This morning's greater alarm structure fire in Hyde Park was knocked down after one hour and twenty-two minutes with over 100 firefighters responding to the scene.

Just a few blocks away from last week's massively big fire that nearly leveled a city block at Gage and Gramercy in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South LA comes another fire this morning at 2327 Southwest Drive that was called in at 10:38 a.m. this morning (map below).

On air news reports are saying that one whole city block is basically destroyed in a fire that started in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles around 2:15 p.m. this afternoon near the major intersection at Western and Slauson, more specifically at the industrial block of Gage and Gramercy. As of 4:30 p.m., fire officials said that it appears that the fire was contained and under control. Seven business occupancies were involved in the fire, but to what extent they were damage is unknown at this point, according to d'Lisa Davies, LAFD spokesperson.

A strong fire is rocking through a one-story commercial warehouse that manufactures and stores wooden palettes in an industrial part of the Hyde Park neighborhood in South LA at 6236 Gramercy Place (map below). The wooden palettes are fueling the fire so much, it is being described as a huge bonfire.

As reported earlier today, Los Angeles is America's favorite city to own a Bulldog as a pet. With the high concentration of the breed and their close relative, the pit bull, there's bound to be a few bad seeds. And when we say that, we do not mean the dogs. From CBS2:

Police arrested a 55-year-old man after the Los Angeles City Animal Cruelty Task Force found scarred pit bulls and equipment related to dog-fighting at a property in the Hyde Park section of Los Angeles, authorities said.
