UCLA Pulls Past Washington at the Half to Win. Sportscenter Doesn't Care.

UCLA Pulls Past Washington at the Half to Win. Sportscenter Doesn't Care.

The Bruins were lucky enough to get coverage on FSN this time while breaking away from a 10-10 tie at the half to outlast Washington 44-31 last night. Washington's Jake Locker threw three deadly touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. It was a difficult game for the Bruins, until the Huskies' defense started to give during the second half. Each touchdown pass that Locker completed, the Bruins were able to respond to until finally opening... more ›

I Started a Joke

I Started a Joke

I heard a joke on the radio today that made me giggle. Q: How many batteries does it take to shock a Michigan Wolverine? A: 1 AA. Hardee har har. With that joke, I’m laughing all the way up to this week’s matchup of defeated powerhouses Michigan and Notre Dame. But more on that game later. This Saturday will tell us a lot more about the college football landscape. It will weed out the... more ›

College Football Week 2 Preview: The Tiger Eats the Hokie Episode

College Football Week 2 Preview: The Tiger Eats the Hokie Episode

The fallout from Appalachian State’s upset over Michigan extended beyond Michigan falling out of the Associated Press Top 25 poll. The AP announced on Thursday that lower division schools are now eligible to be included in the poll. It’s great that the Championship Subdivision (aka Division I-AA) has a chance of being ranked alongside the big boys. While I highly doubt that a team even as accomplished as Appalachian State will crack the Top... more ›

Turmoil In The Pacific

Turmoil In The Pacific

The most exciting college sports action is going down this weekend in Los Angeles and this time there's no pigskin involved. The Pac 10 Men's Basketball Tournament is taking place Staples Center. It's a little like that awkward moment just before the Big Dance. It can be expensive to go, you wish you were with one of those cheerleaders, somebody already got upset (big time), and somebody hopes to get lucky. Come to think... more ›

LAst Night's Action: Lots Of It

LAst Night's Action: Lots Of It

Kings 4, Ducks 3, OT - LAist revels in rivalries, especially local ones. Take Los Angeles and Anaheim. Despite gaining parity in baseball and cartoon production, they've seen a major gap in hockey. The Kings are at the bottom of the Western Conference standings, while the Ducks have spent most of the season on top. Yet when the teams face off, that doesn't mean a thing. Los Angeles won in overtime, giving them three wins... more ›

All Things Trojan: USC vs. Washington

All Things Trojan: USC vs. Washington

Just about every major sports media outlet hands out grades or rankings with some clever theme. Since the USC Trojans are pretty well covered on the field, somebody needed to asses the game day experience for fans. Here’s a look at Saturday's USC vs. Washington matchup through the lens of everybody’s favorite spaghetti western (Troy is, after all, a film powerhouse). Food/Beverage GOOD: Push-carts always sell bacon-wrapped hot dogs outside the Coliseum gates, and... more ›

Olson, UCLA Defense Spark Win

Olson, UCLA Defense Spark Win

UCLA was impressive in winning their home opener 31-10 against a tough Utah team. Most impressive was first-time starter Ben Olson who threw for 318 yards, going 26-35 and connecting for 3 TDs. Even more impressive, and perhaps more important, was the swarming Bruin defense, which ranked near the bottom in previous seasons. They forced 3 turnovers including a 28 yard touchdown on an interception by Alterraun Verner early in the first half. Although... more ›

Injury Bugged Bruins

Injury Bugged Bruins

The UCLA Men’s basketball team dropped a tough game to the visiting Washington Huskies, 69-65, giving the Huskies their first win at Pauley Pavilion since 1987. The Bruins, who led by as many as 15 points, found themselves trailing 64-60 when Ryan Appleby hit a three-pointer with less than 3 minutes to go. After some scrambling and a key three pointer by Arron Afflalo, the Bruins pulled to within one. But Husky forward Bobby Jones made one of two free throws to put Washington up 67-65 with 11 seconds left to play. UCLA had one last chance to tie but saw it disappear with a turnover by Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. more ›

Picking Up the Pieces

Picking Up the Pieces

Ah yes. They ALMOST had us there for a minute didn’t they? We almost bought into it. But we should have known better. We had definitely seen this movie before. Sure they were able to tease us with close victories and give us heart attacks for 8 games. But the signs of the Ol’ Bruins that we have known from seasons past started to creep up. The innate ability to make other teams look much better than they really are; see the 21-17 squeaker versus the 1-8 Washington Huskies. The lack of any consistent defense (96th overall, 113th against the run). Playing just hard enough for three quarters and waiting for the proverbial “switch” to turn in the 4th quarter. It all seemed eerily familiar. We all secretly held out hope that this would finally be the year that the potential of our Bruins finally manifested itself in a championship season. But we knew deep down that a loss was going to come eventually and that the dream of a LA showdown of two undefeated teams against the juggernaut at USC would again only be played out on our Playstations. more ›
